Children aged 14 and over can ride the former Citroen Ami rival with a moped permit in some European countries

Microlino Lite Is a 28 MPH EV Balloon for Unlicensed Drivers
Micro's incredibly cute Microlino has always looked like a stylish children's toy, and now there's a new version available for stylish kids to ride and ride. The Microline Lite is just as cool as the existing electric bubbly car, which has been on sale in mainland Europe for several years, but this version has been adapted to comply with regulations that allow drivers under 14 to get behind the wheel.

While the standard version's single 17 hp (17 PS) electric motor gives it a top speed of 90 km/h, the 12 hp (12 PS) Lite, introduced this week at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, has limited speeds. Up to 28 mph. This equates to 40kph and is the maximum speed allowed under the same L6e quadricycle regulations that helped shape the Citroen Ami and its Opel Rocks and Fiat Topolino spin-offs.

Meeting the L6e requirements means young teenagers can get behind the wheel, but the minimum driving age varies from country to country: you need to be 14 in France and Italy, 15 in Sweden, Germany, Austria and Spain, and 16 in most other countries. However, children are not the only target audience. L6e vehicles can be used in Europe by anyone without a full licence, as long as they have a moped permit.

Visually, there's not much to differentiate the lazy new Lite from the faster standard Microlino beyond the color palette. The Lite only comes in Venetian Blue and Berlin Anthracite color options and doesn't have a dual-tone paint option like its bigger sibling, but it does have a few exterior details picked out in orange to give it an 'energetic' look. Beneath the bright colors and BMW Isetta-inspired design, you'll find the same steel and aluminum body, the entire front panel of which swings sideways to allow access to two seats.

Buyers choose between 5.5 and 11 kWh batteries; The little guy delivers 62 miles (100 km) of range and takes two hours to charge to 80 percent; the larger package offers 112 miles (180 km) and takes four hours to juice. -above. The original full-speed Microlino also offers buyers a 15 kWh battery option, giving buyers a range of 142 miles (228 km), but this is not available on the Lite.

Micro hasn't released a list price for the Turin-made Lite, but says it will be available for CHF 149 ($169) per month. It's a four-year deal if buyers put down a 25 percent deposit.

That's only slightly less than $157. Micro wants a regular-power, base-spec Microlino with a list price of $18,750, but obviously the Lite is designed to appeal to drivers who can't legally do so. Lite goes on sale in Europe this spring.
