Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst takes a jab at Detroit Lions for hanging banner after winning NFC North.
Transcript
00:00 At the NFL Combine, the Green Bay Packers general manager made some questionable comments
00:05 about the Detroit Lions.
00:07 Here today to explore that topic is SIL Lions' John Mackerd.
00:10 John, give me your thoughts on the comments by the Packers GM and what that means for
00:14 the team going forward.
00:16 Yeah, Cameron, shots fired!
00:18 When you look at it, many people within the context of the discussion, you know, the Packers
00:23 general manager was asked about the Lions and, you know, having to compete now with
00:27 another team because the Packers obviously had lost their reign on the division.
00:32 And the reporters that were there said that, you know, it was out of character for the
00:36 discussion to go into a little bit of, you know, talking about the Lions and having them
00:42 raise their banner and the Packers don't do that.
00:44 Like they're above raising a banner that they aim to do bigger things.
00:49 And I look at it and I think it's a friendly jab, one to kind of remind the Lions that,
00:54 hey, winning the NFC North should not be your only goal.
00:58 But when you look at it from the Lions' perspective, Cameron, I know many people are discussing
01:02 how the Lions celebrated the winning of the NFC North for the first time in 30 years.
01:08 Why rush to raise a banner?
01:10 Maybe you could have did it at the start of 2024.
01:13 I look at it like, hey, the Lions and their players, front office, coaches, they're trying
01:18 to shed negative labels.
01:20 They were trying to move on from a negative history.
01:23 It was the first time they won the division in 30 years.
01:26 So I have no problem with them raising a banner as quickly as they did.
01:30 But yes, it's clear Dan Campbell is not going to have his team rest on their laurels.
01:36 And I do think the Packers now have put the Lions on notice that, hey, they're a football
01:41 team that wants to compete with the Lions in the division.
01:44 And when you look at it, the Packers and Vikings, I do believe, are the Lions' biggest rivals
01:49 moving forward in 2024.
01:51 One of the biggest threats to the Lions repeating as division champs.
01:54 I have no problem with it.
01:55 I think it's friendly competition.
01:57 And I think when the Packers general manager is asked about the Lions, probably a little
02:01 irritated knowing that, man, the team, the Packers were able to defeat the Lions in 2023.
02:08 But in the end, the Lions were able to advance further in the postseason.
02:11 So Cameron, another rivalry to pay attention to in 2024.
02:15 Lions and Packers, those two games next season should be very fun to watch.
02:20 John, friendly competition or not, I think the Packers GM is just a little bit salty.
02:25 Thanks for all the time.
