00:00 From dancing to throwing logs, the Phoenix Scottish Games are the only place you can
00:06 see it all.
00:07 Yep, and here with us today is Paul Bell and some Highland dancer to give us a sneak peek
00:13 and welcome you to the show.
00:14 Thank you, glad to be here.
00:15 Glad to be here.
00:16 Good to see you, how you doing?
00:17 Great.
00:18 So this is awesome because I've been out to this before and it's the most craziest games
00:22 you will ever see because it's log throwing but not like throwing a log, it's like huge
00:27 logs.
00:28 It's called a caber.
00:29 It's not a telephone pole, it's a caber.
00:34 They actually are made of logs, they're made of pine trees that we get from a place up
00:39 north actually in Utah I think they get their logs but it's called a caber.
00:43 I love it.
00:44 Okay, very cool.
00:45 And they can, the women throw them, the guys throw them, they can weigh up over 100 pounds.
00:52 It's all inclusive.
00:53 It's all.
00:54 Okay, very, very cool.
00:56 So that's one of the things that you're going to see.
00:57 I was looking and I saw that there is a scotch tasting so I was like okay, they've got me,
01:03 they've got me with just that.
01:05 So tell me about some of that stuff.
01:06 We have a scotch tasting.
01:08 They actually will walk you through and help you understand what it is you're tasting,
01:14 you know the different aromas and flavors and things within the scotch.
01:19 They tell you all about how scotch is distilled.
01:21 Okay, very cool.
01:24 Very knowledgeable individuals that do it.
01:26 Kind of like a sommelier with wine, they do the same kind of thing with the scotch.
01:30 I like it.
01:31 And of course, this is about history and of course about tradition here in Arizona but
01:34 all across the world celebrating this.
01:37 It is.
01:38 There are Scottish games held all over the states, the Scots that have moved here and
01:42 come in and there are Scottish games held all over the world.
01:47 Yeah, because there are Scottish people living all over the place and here in Phoenix we
01:51 have quite a bit of.
01:52 We have a large populace of Scottish ancestry within the Phoenix area and this is the 59th
01:59 year that we've done this.
02:01 We did take a year off during the COVID thing but this is 59 years.
02:06 We will have something for everybody.
02:09 We've got stuff for the kids.
02:10 We've got an area where the kids can go in and throw very lightly.
02:15 Logs?
02:16 But cabers and stones and that's one thing from Braveheart that is true.
02:20 They did throw stones at each other because they were not allowed to have swords.
02:24 Right.
02:25 So the kids are going to throw stones at each other.
02:27 The athletes will be kind of like where the shot put came from.
02:30 They'll be throwing a stone.
02:31 Okay.
02:32 Alright.
02:33 So we've got all that going on.
02:34 We've got stuff for the kids.
02:35 There's food, there's drinks, there's entertainment.
02:37 There's all kinds of food.
02:39 Scottish fare.
02:40 We will have meat pies and Scottish eggs and all kinds of other goodies.
02:46 We will have, oh lord, we have all kinds of beverages, stuff for the kids as well.
02:53 Sodas and all that will be available.
02:56 We have pipe bands.
02:57 We have a pipe band coming in from Canada which is the oldest civilian pipe band in
03:02 Canada.
03:03 They'll be coming down.
03:04 And what's also great too is that this is over the whole weekend coming up here so it's
03:08 not just one day.
03:09 It kicks off Friday night.
03:10 It kicks off Friday night.
03:11 Friday night we have what they call a tattoo.
03:14 We will have, it's kind of a military based thing in history.
03:19 We will have performances by all of the bands that are performing over the entire weekend.
03:25 But it's all kind of about the history of the whole tattoo thing.
03:30 And something else really quickly that I saw that I wanted to chat about was that there's
03:33 a place to go to learn more about your genealogy.
03:36 Yes there is.
03:37 There is.
03:38 We have a couple of expert genealogists that are, that's what they do.
03:42 They can help you start to find, if you think you're Scottish, even if you're not, they
03:48 can help you start going back.
03:51 And like my family, we get to a certain place where we're not sure who was next in line.
03:57 But with the help of these guys, we have found the block.
04:00 Find out your genealogy and your clan as well.
04:03 And so, and they want you, if you do have a kilt at home, put it on.
04:06 Have fun.
04:07 Information is right there on the screen of when you can go check out the Highland Games
04:12 this weekend.
