NT government to roll our sweeping changes to education sector

The Territory government has unveiled a major overhaul of the NT education system, scrapping middle school and attendance-based funding. But the devil is in the detail, something the government does not seem to have much of when it comes to the roll out of the sweeping changes.

00:00 Returning to court to relive a night that sent ripples across the country.
00:07 Former NT Police Constable Zachary Rolfe is questioned for a fourth long day about the
00:12 2019 shooting of Kumonjai Walker.
00:15 The fact that they did not tell us, and I know this is an incredibly hard time for the
00:19 family, but there is a responsibility that has to be borne by not telling us that Kumonjai
00:24 Walker was inside that house.
00:26 I accept that's hurtful, but this is about the truth, and that's the truth from my perspective.
00:32 The coroner also heard had Mr Rolfe told his superiors he was on medication, he may not
00:37 have been deployed to Yundamu at all.
00:40 The then constable was on medication with side effects including seeing or hearing things
00:45 that others do not, and losing touch with reality.
00:48 But Mr Rolfe says his dosage was so low his doctor believed he wouldn't be affected, conceding
00:55 we'll never know what impact, if any, the medication you were taking impaired your conduct
01:00 on the 9th of November.
01:02 Correct.
01:03 Senior Northern Territory Police also filed affidavits with the coroner today rejecting
01:08 Mr Rolfe's earlier allegations of widespread racism within the elite territory response
01:14 group.
01:15 They noted annual TRG awards are handed out, but that a so-called "nougatr" award was a
01:20 made-up word given to the person who displayed the most caveman-like behaviour throughout
01:25 the year.
01:26 The court heard the award was renamed in 2022 following a thorough review of the TRG unit.
01:33 By then the unit was a lot better educated and more sensitive to the impact of perceptions
01:38 and misunderstandings from the Walker Coronial Inquest.
01:41 None of the awards have any connotation to race, the awards are not meant to be offensive.
01:48 Mr Rolfe was acquitted of all charges in 2022 and will continue answering questions tomorrow
01:54 when the inquest is expected to wrap up after 18 months of evidence.
