00:00 "The Philippines will be in danger if its sovereignty is left to the West Philippine Sea."
00:07 This is what President Bobo Marcos said in a forum in Australia.
00:11 The President also asked why his administration's position on China has changed
00:17 compared to the previous administration.
00:19 Watch Ian Cruz.
00:25 In his speech in the forum organized by the think tank Lowy Institute in Australia,
00:30 President Marcos laid out the position of the Philippines when it comes to the relationship with China.
00:37 "Our independent foreign policy compels us to cooperate with them on matters where our interests align,
00:44 to respectfully disagree on areas where our views differ,
00:50 and to push back when our sworn principles such as our sovereignty, our sovereign rights,
00:56 and our jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea are questioned or ignored."
01:02 Marcos also asked why his position on China has changed compared to the previous administration.
01:10 "We must defend the territory of the Republic, and that is a primordial duty of a leader.
01:19 The territorial integrity of the Philippines cannot be threatened,
01:24 and if threats are made, then we must defend against those threats.
01:31 For me, it's almost, as I said, it wasn't a matter of policy choice, it is the duty that I took on."
01:46 But Marcos insisted that the Philippines does not follow the likes of the United States.
01:51 "We make it very, very clear. The Philippines acts for its own interests.
01:57 And the decisions that we make when it comes to foreign policy are decisions that we make
02:03 because we believe and are convinced and know that it is in the national interest.
02:10 It is not a policy that has been foisted upon us by any country."
02:17 The President also attended the Philippine Business Forum,
02:20 where the President encouraged businessmen from Australia to invest in the country.
02:26 There was also a presentation of 14 business agreements between the Philippines and Australia.
02:31 Secretary Alfredo Pascual said that the investment of Australian business in the Philippines is worth US$1.53 billion.
02:41 Earlier this morning, the President and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet had a bilateral meeting.
02:47 As part of the agreement, the strengthening of agriculture, particularly rice, was also discussed.
02:55 Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, along with Australian Foreign Affairs Secretary Penny Wong,
03:03 were at the Maritime Cooperation Forum on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.
03:07 She urged the follow-up to the Ruloc Law on the resolving of the Siganlod in the South China Sea.
03:12 At a presentation, Manalo defended the government's actions against the public
03:18 regarding what is happening in the West Philippine Sea.
03:20 If you would stop harassing us and perhaps performing other actions, there wouldn't be any news to report.
03:31 This evening, the President also met with the Filipino community here in Melbourne
03:36 to thank them for their contribution not only here in Australia but also in the Philippines.
03:43 Tomorrow, the President is expected to have a bilateral meeting
03:47 and will attend the official welcome dinner for the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.
