00:00 Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the application period for citizenship was
00:08 shortened when he took over the ministry.
00:11 He also dismissed criticisms over the proposed amendment to citizenship laws, which the cabinet
00:16 had endorsed, Malaysia Kini reported.
00:19 Saifuddin said the ministry would now decide on the applicant's citizenship within a
00:23 year, adding that he personally handled more than 11,500 applications last year.
00:29 The National Registration Department had previously come under fire for bureaucracy and lengthy
00:34 approval times.
00:36 Last night, Suhakam criticized the bureaucracy and unresponsive attitude of the department,
00:41 which it said represented a major hurdle towards citizenship applications for stateless children.
00:46 He also said the proposed amendment requiring any person to register foundlings within one
00:51 year is regressive for the innocent child.
00:54 DAP's Ramkarpal Singh was reported to have labeled the proposed constitutional amendments
00:58 on the granting of citizenship as "illogical" and "unreasonable."
01:03 One of the more contentious proposed amendments would strip foundlings, such as abandoned
01:07 children or orphans, of their right to automatic citizenship.
