00:00A security expert said it is unwise to rename parts of the South China Sea that fall within
00:07Malaysia's maritime borders.
00:10Mizan Aslam of the National Defence University of Malaysia said coming up with an alternative
00:15name was not a priority when dealing with security threats.
00:20He said it would be better for the government to focus on displaying more dominance when
00:24claiming a territory, citing the dispute between Malaysia and Singapore over Batu Putih.
00:30On Tuesday, Tumpat MP Moong Taznawi mooted the name change in view of the ongoing disputes
00:36with Beijing over the South China Sea.
00:39She suggested that Malaysia rename the sea Laut Asia Tenggara or Laut Melayu.
00:45Geostrategist Azmi Hassan said the government should not entertain such suggestions as he
00:50believed Putrajaya had its own strategy to deal with the dispute.
00:54Beijing has drawn the nine-dash line to assert its claim over 90 per cent of the South China
00:59Sea, overlapping with the maritime borders of several other countries, including Malaysia
01:05and the Philippines.
