00:00 They've bravely smashed windows and attempted to force open a door. Incredibly brave acts,
00:07 attempting to heroically save this elderly resident.
00:13 By morning, the charred remains showed not just one home, but at least four in the retirement
00:17 village destroyed or damaged. Residents, many who have lived here for decades, are in shock.
00:23 A lot of people are pretty devastated by this and it's going to take some time for people
00:30 to get over it. It's sad that he was in the house at the
00:35 time and he's gone. Really awful.
00:41 The 83-year-old was part of the social club and one of the volunteer fire wardens at the
00:46 village. A sad irony that it was a blaze that took his life.
00:50 Apart from being a friend, he's a true gentleman. Fire investigators say the wooden structure
00:56 burnt so quickly he didn't stand a chance. A crime scene has been declared.
01:02 It's problematic given the danger and the fire scene present. There's a lot of damage
01:06 to that structure. Police believe the fire started at the rear
01:09 of the unit. Chaplains have been on site to offer support as this tight-knit community
01:15 grieves.
