We visited Nether Edge, Sheffield, and discovered hidden gems
Transcript
00:00 Netheredge here in Sheffield has been named as one of the best places to live in the North and the North East of England by the Sunday Times.
00:12 They took into account things like schools, transport, broadband speeds, culture, green spaces, the high street.
00:21 So we've come to see just how nice a place it is to live around here.
00:25 Could you tell me what it's like living here in Netheredge please?
00:29 Well I've lived here seven years and I really like the area. I think it is one of the best areas.
00:34 I mean Sheffield's a great city in itself with all the trees and the greenery and the location near the peaks and everything.
00:43 But Netheredge itself is a great mix of people, very friendly, you know, culturally mixed.
00:51 But all very present to each other and there's good shops, there's good pubs, there's, you know, everything you really need in one little area like this.
01:04 How long have you lived here?
01:05 Seven years.
01:06 Would you live anywhere else?
01:08 Yeah, but I like it here. I don't really want to move.
01:15 Just talking to Annie Spencer who's involved with the local theatre group here at Netheredge.
01:21 Could you tell me about the theatre please Annie?
01:23 Yeah, so it's a historical theatre nestled in the beautiful suburb of Netheredge.
01:29 It's roughly about 130 years old.
01:32 It's an 84-seater, it's very intimate, beautiful, beautiful theatre with its own theatre company called the Dillersky Players
01:41 which have been around for about 57 years, I want to say, this year.
01:46 And they put on shows throughout the whole year and they do like comedies and murder mysteries and Shakespeare's and yeah, good pieces of theatre.
01:57 How unusual is it to have a theatre with their own company around here in Sheffield?
02:02 I would say we're probably the only theatre company in Sheffield to have their own theatre.
02:08 Other than the big professional ones, right?
02:09 Yeah, apart from obviously the Crucible and the Library Theatre and things like that.
02:13 What's Netheredge like as a place to live?
02:16 It's beautiful. It's such an amazing community and it sort of spreads out onto Barbadale Road as well which has got its own community
02:23 and there's so much diversity, there's lots of things to do, there's lots of parks as well and walks.
02:31 And we've got the Netheredge Market this Sunday as well which will be the, I can't remember the date off the top of my head,
02:39 which is a really fun event which they've got dancers and performers, music, food, stalls, all sorts and it's just amazing.
02:52 And we've got loads of vendors who come down as well, like lots of different bakeries and cafes will have their own stalls here as well.
02:57 So that's like another reason why Netheredge is here.
02:59 Does that take place here on the...
03:00 Yes, so it's this road all the way up there and then a little bit further down.
03:04 And that's, which road's this one?
03:06 This is Netheredge Road.
03:08 Well I'm just heading between Netheredge Road and Chelsea Park now and you can see there's a lovely woodland walk on the way.
03:17 [Birds chirping]
03:29 Well I've arrived at Chelsea Park and as you can see it's beautiful, it's really peaceful, beautiful green space.
03:37 So Netheredge is a really nice place.
03:40 While I've been here I've found some absolutely fantastic architecture, some lovely cafes,
03:47 discovered places that do music, other artistic venues including a theatre which I hadn't previously known about.
03:57 And it's absolutely beautiful, I can understand why people would rate Netheredge so highly.
