Cllr Elizabeth Evans defends pay rise for Ceredigion councillors amid huge council tax rises and service cuts
Transcript
00:00 regarding all the community events that we do go to as councillors.
00:05 We've all got them in our wards and there are many of them.
00:07 But that is all voluntary.
00:09 That's in our own time.
00:10 We get paid for three days a week.
00:14 Now, what I would suggest and what Gary said,
00:16 I don't think there should be any grand gestures of,
00:19 "Oh, we're not going to take this money."
00:21 Because what we do, we do a disservice to
00:23 any future candidates for this council chamber,
00:26 because nobody should ever, ever make it a consideration
00:31 whether they stand for council for election
00:33 based on their own personal circumstances.
00:37 That's the truth. Otherwise, we would be
00:39 having a very narrow demographic in this council chamber.
00:42 So what is not our decision,
00:44 I do think that we should never,
00:47 ever feel guilty for taking a salary either,
00:51 because all of us, to a man and a woman,
00:54 work very, very hard.
00:55 Tioch.
