Rishi Sunak tears into Labour at a campaign launch event

Rishi Sunak has teared into Labour at a campaign launch at a Derbyshire bus depot this morning by raising the issue of cash-strapped local councils, saying Labour is "unable to balance the books when it is in local government". The prime minister then added “just look what’s happening here, Nottingham Council effectively bankrupt. After having a fire-sale of assets, they still can’t balance the books, in contrast to the extraordinarily well-run Conservative Nottinghamshire County Council". He also said that "whenever Labour runs something, they run it into the ground. In Birmingham, they have effectively bankrupted the largest local authority in Europe. They have saddled their constituents with a 21% council tax rise.” Report by Czubalam. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn

00:00 How are you? You alright? You okay? Alright! Morning, morning! How's everyone doing? Good?
00:07 Alright, alright, settle down, settle down. Morning everyone, morning. It's great to be
00:13 here with Ben because there is no one better to be your first mayor than Ben Bradley everyone!
00:25 Not only, not only did Ben literally create this role, he also has a track record of bringing
00:31 in investment. As the leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, he secured billions of pounds
00:36 and in this role he'll have £4 billion to invest in driving growth, jobs and opportunity
00:42 in the region. Just look what's happening here. Nottingham Council effectively bankrupt.
00:48 After having a fire sale of assets they still can't balance the books, in contrast to the
00:53 incredibly well run Conservative Nottinghamshire County Council. Whenever Labour run something
00:59 they run it into the ground. In Birmingham they've effectively bankrupted the largest
01:04 local authority in Europe. They've saddled their constituents with a 21% council tax
01:11 rise. That is not a typo, 21% council tax rise. And what do they get for that? Hundreds
01:18 of job losses, services slashed, street lights being dimmed or switched off, making the streets
01:24 less safe and they're not even going to collect the rubbish as much as they used to and they're
01:29 going to charge you when the rats come to take the rats away. That is what you get.
01:35 And in spite of all of that, what have they still done? They've still appointed an equality,
01:40 diversity and inclusion czar on a six figure salary. It just goes to show, Labour's priorities
01:46 are not the priorities of the British people my friends.
