Transcript
00:00 It's an overcast day here in Bicentennial Park, but the wet weather couldn't stop a
00:05 group of dedicated volunteers from coming out in support of Tamworth's third annual
00:10 Melanoma March.
00:12 Let's take a look.
00:13 Today's about raising awareness and bringing the community together so that people who
00:17 have suffered from melanoma can come together and share their stories and give that support.
00:24 Raising valuable funds is very important for today as well so that the Melanoma Institute
00:31 can continue their wonderful world-leading research.
00:34 Alright, here we go.
00:35 2024.
00:37 Good boy.
00:39 Let's drop a roll.
00:41 The Tamworth community has raised $3,160 this year, beating last year's march by more than $300.
00:50 Donations are open until the end of the month.
00:52 There's quite a community in Tamworth.
00:54 Anne Brooke, the lady who organised the march today, her son, unfortunately suffered a similar
01:00 issue with melanoma and at the moment he still survives.
01:03 I've just been speaking to another gentleman who in 2018 was given a diagnosis that he
01:08 might not be here and he still is.
01:10 They're the sorts of things that are really important to me.
01:14 To say that we can have research that will find a cure.
01:19 We haven't got that cure 100% yet.
01:22 Of the trial people I was involved in, there were still 20% who didn't survive.
01:26 40% got a similar result to myself and 40% had some result but not the same, I suppose,
01:34 security of life that I'm experiencing at the moment.
01:36 With the Melanoma Institute working towards zero deaths from the disease, every dollar
01:41 raised is a step towards creating a melanoma-free Australia.
01:45 This has been Jonathan Hawes for the Northern Daily Leader.
