UST coach says Golden Tigresses’ defense off

The UST Golden Tigresses simply could not score and defend the way they used to.

Coach Kungfu Reyes said that this is the reason why UST lost for the first time in the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament, falling to the NU Lady Bulldogs, 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 20-25, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, March 24.

UST still leads at 8-1.

00:00 What are your thoughts on the season?
00:02 We learned a lot this time.
00:07 Actually, like we said, if we can go back to our game in Ateneo,
00:14 we did a lot of take-aways during training.
00:19 We didn't lack anything.
00:21 Same thing with FPU and Adam.
00:26 Those are the things that we're going back to.
00:29 We overcame this time.
00:32 We had a lot of lapses that we should have done correctly.
00:38 We didn't convert our scorers.
00:41 We were really at the points where we were supposed to be.
00:44 No reason or alibi for us to lose.
00:50 We really lacked in our defense department.
00:55 We didn't have a defense.
00:57 Our blocking and service were not good.
01:00 Those things were not the quality of a team that can win the game.
01:07 Which is us now.
01:09 The good thing is, as early as the second game of the second round,
01:17 we saw that the breaking point that we're calling for is that we're in a loop.
01:30 That's why we really enhanced our defense department.
01:37 Again, mental toughness, how to recover, especially body language.
01:42 Those are the things that we're looking at now.
01:44 I just reminded them earlier in the dugout,
01:48 before, because it's taken, we lose the point, we lose the set,
01:53 but do not lose your character this time.
01:55 We lose the game, definitely, the character should not be lost.
01:59 We already have a Megan that's in a loop.
02:03 We're waiting for this.
02:05 We're waiting, we don't know when the runners will arrive.
02:10 This is what happened in front of us.
02:12 What can we give to the kids or themselves?
02:17 What else can they do to learn?
02:22 The technical and tactical valuable that they told us,
02:27 so the small body language, emotional side,
02:31 that's what we should target or upgrade.
02:36 This is your first loss in the UAAP Women's career. What are your thoughts?
02:42 There are a lot of things that are lacking in the game.
02:47 The first thing that we lost is communication.
02:50 We also don't have the energy to finish the set.
02:54 It's not over yet.
02:57 We're still in the top, 8-1.
03:00 What we need to do is to bounce back.
03:03 We'll do what we need to do to improve.
03:08 There's no pressure, it's hard to not lose.
03:14 You need to keep going.
03:16 But now, you're winning.
03:18 It's easier for you to be ready for the next games.
03:23 You don't have a record to chase.
03:26 Our loss is that we'll just do motivation for the next games.
03:32 We switched the first round and we lost the second round.
03:38 We'll just do motivation to continue in the next games.
03:43 After the incident in the U.S.,
03:50 what's your physical fitness like now?
03:54 Is it affected by your performance?
03:58 It's affected, but I had time to recover.
04:03 I had 3 days to recover.
04:06 Now, I'm okay with my performance.
04:12 I'm happy that I contributed.
