00:00 Rights groups have called for the abolition of the Sedition Act 1948,
00:06 which they described as an "oppressive legislation" that no amendment can save.
00:11 Lawyers for Liberty adviser N. Soorin Jhun said the government's decision to amend the law was
00:18 "unacceptable and regressive." He said the Sedition Act has been notoriously
00:24 abused for political purposes due to its vague definition of seditious tendency.
00:29 Meanwhile, Amnesty International Malaysia Executive Director Katrina Jaurin Maliamov
00:36 said amending the controversial act went against the PH government's commitments to repeal it.
00:41 She said a reform-minded government would instead acknowledge
00:45 how oppressive laws stifle expression and political participation.
00:49 On the other hand, lawyer Andrew Khoo said the penal code has adequate provisions to protect
00:55 the royalty, rendering amendments to the Sedition Act redundant.
00:59 He said the Sedition Act is unjust because people can be convicted under the law
01:04 even if there is no intention to insult or incite.
