00:00 Okay, welcome to another episode of Goal Malfaction podcast where we take a look at all the latest
00:08 goings on at Brighton, Hove, Albion, Crawley Town and all sports across Sussex. I'm Darren
00:13 Howard and this week I'm joined by Brighton, Hove, Albion writers Sam Morton and Henry
00:17 Bryant and Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford. Albion were defeated by Liverpool at the weekend
00:23 but got the point at Brentford in a drab 0-0 draw last night. We look at those two games
00:29 and look ahead to Arsenal's visit to the American Stadium this weekend. Us we'll look back at
00:34 the mixed Easter weekend for Crawley Town that saw them drop out then jump back into
00:38 the League 2 play-offs. You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and
00:43 pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk/sport and you can check out our other great videos
00:49 on shotstv.com and freeview channel 276. You may also be watching on latest TV so thank
00:56 you for tuning in. First of all, we'll start with Brighton. Sam, you went to both the Liverpool
01:03 games at Anfield and then at the GTEC Community Stadium at Brentford. What did you make of
01:08 the performances and should the Seagulls have had more than the one point to show for their
01:13 troubles?
01:14 Yeah, it was two difficult games for Brighton for two different reasons. Obviously, Liverpool
01:19 are one of the most important teams in the League and Brighton went there probably not
01:23 expecting to win. I don't think many fans expect them to get a result with the form
01:27 that Liverpool were in. I suppose some hope was that they were coming back after the intercession
01:30 break and weird things can happen. But Liverpool really did carry on from where they left off
01:35 in terms of the intensity and the kind of just relentless attacking play that they showed.
01:41 But it was Brighton who took the early lead through Danny Welbeck. It was an amazing strike
01:45 really on a half-volley right into the top corner. You almost felt like they scored too
01:49 early maybe. I think that's definitely what some people have been saying. They took the
01:53 lead too early and Liverpool just had loads of time to respond to it and to be able to
01:59 turn it around. That's exactly what they did. They had the chance to win by four goals.
02:04 I think Brogdon had a really good game. Lewis Stunk was brilliant, back to his best. Had
02:08 Hecker as well, he's been brilliant all season. But I think on another day, Brighton could
02:13 have nicked a point. I think the longer the game remained 2-1, there was a couple of really
02:18 big misses for Liverpool where they should have scored. And there was a couple of other
02:22 key moments. And the longer the game stayed 2-1, you felt Brighton could have nicked a
02:25 point on another day. Adam Nalanda came on and had a great chance towards the end. He
02:30 did feel like it was all set up for a bit of a smashing grab at the end. But it wasn't
02:35 to be and Liverpool came out 2-1 winners. And at Brentford, you felt they needed to
02:41 respond with a win. It was a positive performance against Liverpool and you just hoped they
02:45 would carry that on at Brentford and get a much-needed win. Because in the last eight
02:49 games of the season, they've got to face Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Mane
02:55 Knight and Chelsea. It's just an incredibly tough running of games they've got. So you
02:59 felt like away at Brentford, never easy, but one of those games they probably really wanted
03:04 to win and put themselves in a decent position. But we just didn't see that intensity really.
03:08 I think they really lacked something going forward. It was obviously great to see Joao
03:13 Pedro back and he really was a live wire and lucky he's never been away. And he looked
03:19 like the most likely to create that goal scoring chance. It didn't come really and it was Danny
03:25 Woldbeck who came on and probably had the best chance of the game. He played one-on-one
03:28 and was denied by a brilliant block. And then in injury time, he ran down the left-hand
03:32 side. It was a brilliant run actually. It left the defenders trading behind him. And
03:37 then you almost felt like he could have fouled Moda if he looked up. But he went alone and
03:42 put it wide of the goal. A frustrating one, but they did really well to keep Ivan Toni
03:47 quiet. Really good defences. Brentford looked even less like scoring in the game. So that
03:52 goes as a credit to Brighton. When you consider Brentford against Man United the other day
03:55 were absolutely relentless with the shots and the chances they had. And Brighton really
03:59 did limit what they could do going forward. It's just a shame they couldn't nick a goal
04:04 to win the game.
04:05 What's the deal with Anssu Fati? He was a notable absentee from the squad yesterday.
04:13 Yes, so he was missing along with Evan Ferguson and Valentin Barko were the three ones we
04:18 were surprised to see missing. It was revealed quite early on that Evan Ferguson had picked
04:22 up a minor knock. So that was why he wasn't in the squad. We weren't too sure why Anssu
04:30 Fati and Barko were there. It wasn't until the press conference afterwards that the Serb
04:35 revealed that he actually left them out of his own accord. He decided to leave them out.
04:40 He said they weren't ready to be in the squad. They need to go away and work alone to improve
04:45 their physical condition, he said, about both Fati and Barko. And he was asked to elaborate
04:50 on Fati and he said that he's in no doubt about his ability. That hasn't changed at
04:56 all. He's still seen some of the best talents for his age in the world. But something is
05:01 quite missing. He has higher expectations of him than what we're seeing from Fati. And
05:05 he is not showing the right mentality that he mentioned. And he needs to work on his
05:10 fitness. So that's a real concern. I think when you consider the money that he's on,
05:14 the excitement there was when he signed. We've spoken before that he probably hasn't lived
05:18 up to the hype, you would say. And he really has had opportunities to with Jal Pedro and
05:23 the Tome being out for a long period and other players that have been out. He's been looking
05:27 towards a player like Fati to really step up and be counted. He's not really done that,
05:33 has he? He had a good run of form towards November time when he got a goal against Ajax.
05:40 He got a goal in the assist against Ajax and he got a goal against Manchester City in the
05:44 consolation goal. He was just starting to show a little bit of what he can do. Then
05:48 he picked up that injury, was out for a few months. And since returning, he really hasn't
05:53 stepped up at all, which is a strange one, obviously, for the quality that we know he's
05:57 got. He hasn't really shown it at Brighton yet. It's obviously a strange one and a difficult
06:02 one for Brighton to deal with.
06:04 Yeah, yeah. It would be interesting to see an on-form Fati, who would have been great
06:07 against Brentford, wouldn't he, to unlock that tough defence. But interesting to see
06:11 if he'd be in the squad against Arsenal this weekend, Henry. Mikel Arteta's team, they
06:18 looked really solid against Man City, didn't they, in the 1-0 draw. And then their second
06:22 team pretty much swatted aside Luton last night. Can Albon get anything out of this
06:28 at all, do you think, Henry?
06:30 Well I think that when I spoke to Dzervi last night, the final question that was asked at
06:35 that press conference was, you've got a really tough running of games. How are you going
06:39 to turn these somewhat decent performances into results? And he said that we need to
06:45 have big results and big wins against big teams and that will be no different against
06:50 Arsenal on the weekend. And I feel like with the likes of Martin Udagadi, who's just been
06:55 such an engine for them, it's going to be quite difficult for Albon to just break down
07:01 the team entirely. And I think that we'll have to just see. But in my opinion, I think
07:07 it'll be a real tough game that could go either way. But it will be decided in the first 10,
07:13 20 minutes to see if Albon are really able to push forward and actually create chances.
07:17 There was a lack of creativity in some sense. And in terms of the Brentford game, it was
07:25 quite a hard one to take for Albion fans because it looked like we were knocking at the door
07:30 but just not creating any chances that would have resulted in a goal really. So that was
07:37 a shame.
07:38 Brighton's home form is pretty good though, isn't it?
07:41 Absolutely. I think I was speaking to Sam on the way down to the Brentford game yesterday
07:48 and our away form is pretty shocking against London's sides away. We haven't won many of
07:54 those away in the capital. But yeah, like you say, Brighton do have a really good home
08:00 record at the moment and I'm hoping that with previous games that we've had with Arsenal,
08:05 we've been able to nick either a point or sometimes get three points out of them. So
08:09 we'll just see. But they're in such good form at the moment and it really does depend if
08:14 Brighton are able to show up and actually have their players like Jal Pedro be in form
08:19 for them for that game.
08:21 Yeah, yeah, yeah, indeed. But some interesting matters off the pitch as well, Sam. Brighton
08:26 released figures boasting record profits, which is, is that testament to a well-run
08:31 club or do they just sell too many players basically, Sam?
08:34 Yeah, I think both arguments are fair, I'd say really. I think obviously Brighton's profit
08:38 will be that high because they are so very good at signing players on the cheap and then
08:42 they're sending them off for huge money. I think they're one of the best, if not the
08:46 best in the world at doing that really. And we've seen it time and time again, obviously
08:50 most recently with with Kai Sedo. Obviously, they probably didn't get as much money as
08:54 they would like to for a player like Alexis Mikhalis, especially when you see how brilliant
08:58 he's been for them before he did one of the signings of the season. So they may be thinking
09:03 they could have got more for him. But I think that's a variety really. I think most of the
09:07 time they get the most possible for a player and we've seen that time and time again, because
09:12 it looks like Kai Sedo has gone for maybe too much money than he probably should have
09:15 done, perhaps. So it kind of works both ways. But I think there definitely is an argument
09:20 that fans would always like them to see less in profit if they were getting better results
09:26 on the pitch. And I think with the players they've lost this season, especially Mikhalis
09:29 and Kai Sedo, they've not really been able to replace them as well as they might have
09:34 hoped to, as they have done in previous seasons when they've lost their key players. I think
09:38 it's definitely been the toughest challenge yet, I think, with those two players. And
09:42 I think fans probably would have liked to have seen them spend a bit more of that money
09:45 they've made to be able to get into the Europa League or even better, I think, than they
09:51 could have done with some more names in there. But obviously injuries haven't helped at all.
09:56 But yeah, it's a difficult one because it's really a double-edged sword.
09:59 It is, isn't it? Yeah. It's how you run a club properly to stay in the Premier League
10:03 and compete against the big ones, but also try and keep your best players as well. It's
10:08 very tricky, very tricky.
10:10 And Henry, another piece of news off the pitch, a new five-year contract extension for the
10:15 CEO and Deputy Chair Paul Barber. He's widely credited as being one of the best in the business
10:20 at what he does. Would you go along with that?
10:24 I'd have to say yes, because it's not only myself that thinks that and the fans, but
10:28 it's also De Zerby when he was asked in the post-match press conference yesterday, he
10:33 is one of the best going around. And you can just tell with the way that the club's run
10:39 and the partnership between Tony Bloom and Paul Barber, it's just unmatched. And it's
10:44 sort of that sort of, you know, an upcoming club that's been able to work so well with,
10:50 you know, the little resources that they had and building up and getting these record transfer
10:55 fees for some of their players.
10:56 And I think on paper, they've done remarkably well. And speaking to Tony Bloom earlier in
11:02 the year, I asked him about if his goal overall when he did buy the club was the Premier League
11:06 and he said, yes, we always had very high ambitions. So him and Paul Barber really do
11:13 know what they're doing. And I think it's great that Brighton can keep hold of him because
11:17 as we've seen with recruitment staff at the Albion and managers and backroom staff, it
11:23 always seems to be that it's a cycle of moving on and then finding another replacement that
11:28 seems to be doing just as good, if not better. So, yeah, no, it's just great to have him
11:33 involved. And I think that partnership between himself and Tony Bloom is an unmatched one
11:37 and really quality and key to what Brighton are doing.
11:41 Yeah, that's great. Looks like it's going to continue for some time. But join us after
11:45 the break and we'll be talking about all things Crawley Town.
11:50 OK, the Easter weekend started badly for Crawley but ended brilliantly for them, didn't it,
11:56 Nick? Can you talk us through exactly what happened?
11:59 Yeah, it was a funny one because going into Friday's game, Good Friday's game against
12:04 Doncaster, they were in the playoffs. Everything was high, home crowd. They were hoping for
12:10 a record crowd. They got a record home attendance, home fan attendance, but not an overall record
12:16 attendance because it was the first of their two at two pound game. So cheap entry, hoping
12:20 to fill it up. They thought it was going to be rocking, playing Doncaster, a team who
12:24 were in form but were 19th in the table. And they just didn't turn up, Crawley. And yeah,
12:30 Scott Lindsay was really disappointed afterwards. They lost 2-0. And he just said they just
12:35 weren't aggressive enough. And he just called it a massive missed opportunity because if
12:40 they'd won that, it would have just sort of really cemented their place in the playoffs.
12:43 But they dropped out of the playoffs that night. And he was asked whether being in the
12:48 playoffs added a bit of pressure to the players. And he said it might have done. It might have
12:54 done. Maybe they're better off being outside the playoffs and sneaking in right at the
12:56 end. But there were certainly no nerves at all on Monday, Easter Monday. They went to
13:03 Newport. Always a tough trip. They drew 2-2 there, I think, last year. But they scored
13:08 after 50 seconds, thanks to Dion Conroy returning. First game in quite a while for him after
13:13 getting injured at Harrogate. And yeah, they didn't look back after that. Ronan Darcy scored.
13:19 Lawrence McGuire scored an absolute cracker volley from a Wheelwright free kick. And then
13:23 I can't remember who scored the final goal. That's embarrassing, isn't it? But yeah, it
13:30 was. Oh, it was Adam Campbell. That's right. Really good team move. Adam Campbell. Slide
13:34 home. Yeah. So yeah, it was an amazing performance. They're back in the playoffs now. And other
13:40 results again going their way with Gillingham losing and things like that. They've been
13:44 quite lucky. And actually, Lindsay said that after Friday's defeat, we've been, he told
13:49 his players, we were lucky because all the results have sort of gone our way. Teams were
13:52 drawing, dropping points, etc. around them. So they're back in the playoffs now. They've
13:57 got a game in hand. They're two points clear of it. So yeah, it's a really, really positive
14:03 time. And yeah, I mean, to beat Newport 4-0 away from home is just quite a result and
14:09 a real statement from them. And I think, yeah, they really are in the pole position now.
14:14 They've got some tough games coming up, but I think they can, I think we could be on the
14:18 verge of a historic trip to Wembley for Crawley.
14:22 Just on Newport very quickly. Sorry. I think you've seen obviously earlier in the season
14:25 that they gave Man United a really hard game, didn't they? In the FA Cup. And they really
14:31 well remember watching that game on TV and thinking how kind of, obviously it's easy
14:34 to kind of probably play out your skins for games like that, but you just so kind of what
14:37 they can do and Crawley just, yeah, completely put them to the sword and Newport never looked
14:42 like scoring. So it was an incredible performance.
14:45 To be fair, Sam, we could give Man United a tough game. So, yeah, it was, it was, Sam,
14:54 you're right. It was so impressive and it was Crawley's ninth away win this season.
15:00 What's the secret to their success on the road, Mark?
15:03 Well, you asked Scott Lindsay and he said, because he was asked this after the Newport
15:07 game and he just said, we're a better side than we were last year sort of thing, because
15:11 they only won two games away last year. He just said they're a good side, but it's all
15:15 down to Lindsay and his staff, the amount of preparation they do into these games. And
15:21 I think it was after the Tranmere game as well, because there was a couple of times
15:24 where like Jay Williams and Clydie Lollos, they were winding the home fans up. And I
15:28 think they just love putting it on the home fans grounds they're visiting. I think they
15:36 just love winding them up. So that's a real incentive. But plus all the meticulous planning
15:41 that Scott Lindsay and his team do into sort of the personal matchups within the game,
15:45 how they're going to play. I mean, we all know how Scott Lindsay's going to set up,
15:49 but there are just minor little tiny little tweaks he makes to each game, how they're
15:54 pressing, who they're pressing, how high up the pitch they're pressing, et cetera. And
16:00 I think, yeah, it's just down to that. And like you said, they have got a much better
16:04 team than last year. I mean, last year they were way more nearly cost them league status,
16:10 but yeah, it's just really good, really good preparation, I think. And I think teams up
16:17 and down the country have been underestimating Crawley this year, I think. And they're showing
16:22 that they could get into those playoffs and it'll be their away form that has helped them
16:26 get there, I think.
16:27 Yeah, yeah, yeah. And another two, two more away games this week for them, two tough ones.
16:33 They travel to title chase in Mansfield on Saturday and then Wrexham on Tuesday. Are
16:38 these make or break for Crawley in their pursuit of the playoffs, Sam?
16:42 I think they're huge, huge game for them. And I think when you look at where they're
16:46 at, Mansfield, Wrexham, Highland and Tate, they're both going for automatic promotion.
16:50 They're tied neck and neck in points at the moment as well. So they're two teams that
16:54 will be desperate to win for themselves going into this late stage of the season. So I think
16:59 it's all set up to be a really exciting game between teams that have so much to play for.
17:05 And that's really what you want to see coming into this late stage of the season. I think
17:09 the worst thing is when you've got games that have nothing riding on it, it's a bit of a
17:13 dead rubber, but so much at stake. And I think that's all set up to be a really exciting
17:17 game. And I think Crawley can really cause damage to both teams. I think we've seen a
17:22 little bit of mixed form, especially from Mansfield, where they haven't put a run of
17:26 wins together in recent weeks. I think Wrexham have been in slightly better form and they
17:30 did recently beat Mansfield 2-0, Wrexham did. So I think Wrexham are probably the team most
17:34 in form out of the two. I think even if you can get a draw in both games or a win and
17:39 a draw, I think you don't necessarily have to win both, but try and avoid defeat if possible.
17:42 And their away form's been so good, I want to put it particularly. So yeah, it's two
17:47 huge games. Crawley can come away with two draws, even that would be good, I think. It's
17:55 just a shame really, because if Crawley had brought that win at home, it would have maybe
17:59 given them a little bit more of a cushion going into these two games. So maybe there's
18:03 a little bit more riding on it in that sense, and trying to put themselves in better shape
18:08 if possible. I think it's hard for them to do the big things these days.
18:15 I think they're actually... Yeah, you might want to mute yourself, Sam, the wind is picking
18:19 up.
18:19 It's getting increasingly windy.
18:21 Yeah. I think it's actually a bigger game for Mansfield and Wrexham than it is for Crawley
18:25 these two games. I think, like Sam mentioned there, they're both chasing the title, but
18:30 they would have looked at Crawley, seen their away form. I mean, Crawley battered Wrexham
18:34 earlier in the season, but lost 1-0. I think Wrexham and Mansfield will both look at this
18:40 fixture and think, 'God, this is a tough one for us', especially with Crawley's away form.
18:44 Yeah, it's going to be an interesting couple of games for them. But one thing came out
18:52 this week that struck us, Mark. The EFL League Two Manager of the Season nominees have been
18:57 announced and Scott Lindsay wasn't there. What the heck's going on there? That's a bit
19:02 of a...
19:02 Oh, it's an absolute travesty. Yeah. I've written a piece actually this morning,
19:07 conveying my anger about why he hasn't been on there. I mean, there is a chance Crawley
19:12 won't get in the playoffs. I mean, they've got some tough games coming up. They might
19:17 not get there, but whatever happens, the job Scott Lindsay has done this year, and I know
19:22 he'll admit it's not just him, it's his backroom staff, as I've mentioned, and all that as
19:26 well, and the way the players have signed up to his philosophy and all that. Everybody's...
19:32 But the job he has done, I mean, the biggest thing he's done is stop the fans singing about
19:36 Wagme. Because that's all they did last year. All they did was sing about Wagme. And they
19:41 seem to have forgotten about Wagme. Well, some of them haven't, but a lot of them have.
19:44 He's just made it such a feel-good factor around the place. And the players that he's got in,
19:51 we've talked about it a lot, but non-league players, Clydie Lollos was at Oxford City,
19:56 Jay Williams was at Banbury Town. It's just Banbury United, sorry.
20:00 And they've become first-team regulars. Will Wright wasn't wanted by Gillingham.
20:06 Liam Kelly was relegated with Rochdale last year, and that is all players that teams didn't
20:11 really want or didn't really want. And he's made them into this team that could be on the verge
20:17 of a trip to Wembley, which is just incredible. Nigel Clough's been nominated. Lee Bowe of
20:23 Crewe, I think it is, and Mike Williamson of MK Dons, they're the three that have been nominated.
20:28 I mean, there's a real possibility Crawley could beat Crewe and MK Dons in the playoffs.
20:32 How embarrassing is that going to look for the EFL or whoever's decided these
20:37 three nominees? If Scott Lindsay's team gets promoted above those two, it's just utterly
20:42 ridiculous. He hasn't been recognised for the job he's done. I mean, at the end of the day,
20:46 it's an award. It doesn't really matter. I mean, I'm sure it doesn't bother Scott Lindsay. He hasn't
20:51 given one thought to it. But all the fans and everybody around Crawley Town will know the job
20:56 he has done and think he's probably been recognised for it. So, yeah, Trav Dermot might be properly
21:02 angry. I'll take a look at your piece. But yeah, you should have at least been nominated, you
21:07 had a thought. But onto the score predictions for this weekend. Henry, we'll come to you first.
21:19 Brighton versus Arsenal, 5.30pm kick-off at the Amex Stadium this Saturday. What do you think?
21:25 Well, I think that it really is going to be dictated in the first 10, 20 minutes to see
21:32 how Brighton are going to respond to a few performances where they have played well,
21:36 but not had that attacking threat. And it's going to be a case of if we can get that spark back.
21:41 We're not in Europe anymore. We know that we're going to have a lot more sort of time
21:46 in these last few games of the season to sort of recover because we've got no sort of midweek
21:51 European games. And De Zerby did say at the end of the press conference, that will be
21:55 big for us. And he also said that that means that we'll be a completely different side.
22:00 So, I'm hoping that Brighton are able to kind of shock Arsenal from the start and
22:05 Arsenal have a shaky one. So, my prediction would be 2-1 with
22:09 João Pedro to feature on the score sheet.
22:11 Yeah. Yeah. Mark, do you think that's, do you think Brighton can get anything from this one?
22:17 I don't. I've been so impressed with Arsenal this year. They just seem like a different team.
22:23 So, I think it's going to be 2-3-1 Arsenal.
22:27 Yeah, I'd go with 3-2 Arsenal, I think. Sam, do you think Brighton can get anything from this?
22:35 I don't think so. I think Arsenal will win this one 2-1. I think, yeah,
22:39 they're too strong at the moment and they have to win for their own title race. And I think,
22:45 yeah, it's a really tough game for Brighton. Hopefully, they can make a good account of
22:49 themselves. But I think Arsenal will come out 2-1 winners.
22:51 Fair enough. And Mark, we're looking at Crawley Town now. Mansfield versus Crawley on Saturday.
22:58 I think, I think they can get something. I think they can get a draw at Mansfield. Mansfield
23:03 haven't been in the greatest form. So, I'm going to go for 1-1 at Mansfield for Crawley.
23:07 1-1 at Mansfield. Henry, what do you think is going to happen at Mansfield?
23:11 Well, like Scott Lindsay was saying, there's maybe a bit of pressure on the players. So,
23:17 I feel like it will be a difficult fixture for them. But I'd probably have to almost go ahead
23:23 with the same thing as Mark and say a 1-1 there. 1-1, yeah. I'd probably go with 1-1 as well. Sam,
23:30 what do you, how do you see that one going?
23:33 2-1 Crawley. Their away form is going to continue. They're going to be solid.
23:36 Good stuff. Good stuff. We hear the Premier League side complain about fixture schedules,
23:43 but Crawley are straight back in it on Tuesday. Rexham, Mark, what's going to happen there?
23:49 They're going to win at Rexham, I think. I think I'm going to go 2-1. Like I said earlier in the
23:53 season at the Broadwell Stadium, Crawley absolutely battered Rexham and somehow lost 1-0. They just
23:59 could not score that day. So, yeah, I think Lindsay will have the better of them. And,
24:04 yeah, I'm going to go for 2-1 Crawley.
24:06 2-1 Crawley. Henry, would you agree with that?
24:08 I think that it will be the same case and it will be a case of Crawley having all of the ball
24:15 and then in the last few minutes of the game conceding. To be honest with you, I think it'll
24:19 be one of those games where they perform really well and it's just not quite what it seems. And
24:24 it will be a 1-0 defeat.
24:26 1-0 defeat. Fair enough. Sam, just quickly, can you see Crawley getting anything from Rexham?
24:31 I think it will be a draw. I'm going to go for 1-1.
24:34 1-1 draw.
24:35 I think, yeah, Rexham will take the lead in that and Crawley will equalise.
24:37 Yeah, yeah. I think I'll agree with that one as well. I think it's two draws coming up for Crawley,
24:44 I think. But thank you for joining us. You can catch up with all the latest sports news,
