00:00Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at the
00:05latest games on at Brighton, Hove Abbey and Crawley Town. I'm Matt Pole and this week
00:08I'm joined by Brighton Riot Darren Howard, Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford, as well
00:12as Sam Morton, who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds. João Pedro's unusual penalty
00:17secured Brighton a 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal in their first game of 2025. We'll look back
00:22at an excellent game at the Amex, plus we'll bring you all the latest from Crawley Town,
00:26including all the news from a busy festive period for the Reds. You can read all the
00:30stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward

00:43we'll start at the Amex, where João Pedro scored a second-half penalty to Arsenal's
00:48title hopes as the Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton on Saturday evening.
00:51Arsenal went ahead in the 16th minute through Ethan Nguernieri before Pedro struck from
00:56the spot just after the hour. Sum that one up for us, Derham, please, if you can. Not
01:01much time to do it, but there's plenty of talking points.
01:04There's so many talking points, and it really summed Brighton's season up in a nutshell,
01:10to be honest. They've been so inconsistent, and Sam and I went to the game and afterwards
01:15we were just saying what a strange game it was. Brighton were way off the pace in the
01:22first half. They looked far too passive and weren't really involved in the game, other
01:29than an Idinga chance which he put wide. It was pretty comfortable for Arsenal, really.
01:35As you mentioned, they took the lead early on, which was a bit of an error from Bart
01:40Verbruggen. I think he should have done better to keep that one out. But then the second
01:47half, they were unrecognisable. They made a couple of changes. Ruta came on, Jankuba
01:53Minter came on for Gruda, and the crowd really got involved. There was just so much more
02:00energy in the team. When Jal-Pedro got the goal, you really thought that Brighton could
02:07go on to actually get the winner against Arsenal, who probably, to be fair, they weren't at
02:14their best. Arsenal gave a good performance, but they were a little way off from the best
02:20and what you'd expect to see from them.
02:23So, yes, another frustrating game for Brighton. They can't seem to string 90 minutes together.
02:30They play well in patches, but they're just so inconsistent, and that's why they've dropped
02:34down the table to 10th position. But as you mentioned about talking points, the main talking
02:39point was when Jal-Pedro had a clash of heads with, I think it was Saliba, in the penalty
02:46box for the Arsenal defender. Arrived probably a little bit late, Pedro flicked the ball
02:52up in the air and then it was basically a headbutt to the side of his head and he crumpled
02:57to the floor. It was a pretty instant decision for the referee. The referee gave it. There
03:03was a bit of criticism from it from Arteta, the Arsenal players, and then from some pundits
03:08as well. But overall, my thoughts were, and Sam and I spoke about this after the match
03:13as well, that I thought it was a penalty because there was definitely contact in the box. He
03:18took him out, whether it was with his head, you know, if he'd take him out with his foot
03:21or his body or, you know, one way or another, what he did to Pedro made him fall onto the
03:27floor. So, yeah, it was a penalty really. But again, it was a frustrating game, but
03:34it was another point and a bit more promising as we go into the new year.
03:39Well, you've described the penalty situation perfectly, Darren, and that, as you said,
03:43the decision caught in both debate and controversy. And what did you make of the decision, Sam?
03:48I'm of the opinion that any decision that goes against Arsenal is the right decision,
03:51but you might have a more balanced take.
03:54Yeah, it was a really strange one because when it first happened, I must admit, I didn't
03:59think it was a penalty. And when I saw it happen, I was sort of replaying the screens
04:03in front of us in the stadium. I was thinking, surely that can't be given. And I was just
04:07waiting for VAR to intervene and say it wasn't. But I think after seeing it again and seeing
04:12more replays of it, I have changed my mind. I think it is a penalty because Saliba does
04:17get there late in the day and he does get a bit of the ball, but he does take most of
04:21Jal Pedro's head. And at the end of the day, it's a foul with any other part of the body.
04:25If he's tripped him over or he's kind of hit him on the knee or whatever, it's a penalty.
04:30So it's an unusual one. I think the bone of contention is it's just so unusual in the
04:34sense that we just don't see penalties given for this kind of thing. And that's what all
04:38the Match of the Day pundits were saying. They all agreed it wasn't a penalty. And there
04:42was also a clip I saw of Michael Owen and Howard Webb discussing it. I think they have
04:46a show where they review incidents over the weekend, that kind of thing. And they disagree
04:52with each other. Michael Owen said it definitely wasn't a penalty and Howard Webb was explaining
04:57why it was. So it's probably one that I don't think anyone's going to agree on. I think
05:01you're always going to get different viewpoints of it. But I think it was just about the right
05:06decision, but such a difficult one to make, obviously, at the heat of the moment as well,
05:10because even after watching multiple times, people still can't agree. So I don't envy
05:15the referee in that decision that was made. But I think in terms of the match, it was more
05:19than deserved for Brighton with the performance in the second half that a point was the very
05:23least they deserve from the match. And they could have won it as well, as Darren's mentioned.
05:28But yeah, another point, fourth draw in a row. So they need to start turning these draws into wins.
05:34Well, absolutely. You mentioned it there, Sam. Brighton are now without winning eight Premier
05:38League games. But did that second half showing, Darren, kind of make it a positive start
05:43or positive feel to the second half of the 2024-25 campaign for Albion?
05:48I think it did. I think it did. But it's funny, isn't it? Because if they'd have gone ahead and
05:52then Arsenal could have played better in the second half, then everybody would have left the
05:56stadium with a different feel to the game. But because Brighton were poor in the first half and
06:00then better in the second half, got the equaliser and probably maybe could have got the winner.
06:05Everybody's sort of left with a bit of a slightly more upbeat feeling than perhaps
06:11they have done in the past. But yeah, it's 10 draws now in the Premier League. That's the most
06:18most of any team in the Premier League. And as Sam said, they really need to start turning some of
06:23these into three points if they are to push on and challenge for Europe. But I think you look at the
06:34last two. So they had draws against Brentford and West Ham, which were, I think you could come away
06:38from those and feel pretty frustrated. Again, the Leicester draw was frustrating. But the last two
06:44draws away at Villa and then at home against Arsenal, I think most people would be quite happy
06:49with those results. Obviously, at home against an Arsenal team that weren't quite fiery and it could
06:55have been different. But overall on balance, I think the two draws against Villa and Arsenal are
07:03pretty good results for Brighton. And it does give them something to build on as well. Remember,
07:09they are still really struggling with injuries at the moment. So they've got a number of players
07:15out as a lot of Premier League teams have. They've got some injuries which they need to deal with.
07:20But that's why they've got that squad. That's why they spent £200 million. You can't feel too sorry
07:28for them because they've got a massive squad there who they can pick and choose from and change it
07:33around when they need be, when needs be. But the main concern at the moment is in that central area,
07:39though. There was an injury to Lewis Dunk. He couldn't make... He had a calf injury ahead of
07:44the Arsenal game. And then also Igor Julio, he went off with a hamstring injury as well. So he's
07:51going to be out. He posted on social media to say that he's expected to be out for a few months now.
07:56So that is a concern for Brighton, that central area. Adam Webster has only just come back from
08:03his hamstring injury as well. So they may want to tread carefully with him. Van Hecke has just
08:08played and played and played and played. So they'll just be praying that he can continue to
08:15keep going, really. But yeah, I think overall, though, against Arsenal, it was a positive
08:21second-half performance and gives them a good platform to build on.
08:26Well, off the pitch, one of the major talking points of the January transfer window so far
08:30surrounds the future of young seagull striker Evan Ferguson. What's the latest we're hearing
08:35about the Irishman, Sam? And other than Ferguson, are there any other potential
08:38departures from Brighton we should be keeping an eye out for?
08:41Yeah, so I think on Evan Ferguson, it's a strange one, isn't it? Because a couple of years ago,
08:46he was banging in the goals. Remember he scored a hat-trick against Newcastle and he was thought to
08:51be the next big thing. He's been valued at around £100 million by some people. And just seemingly,
09:01the only way it was up for him, the sky was the limit in terms of his trajectory. But it hasn't
09:06turned out that way at all. And he hasn't played that often. I know he had a bit of an injury to
09:10his foot last season that kept him out for a long time. But he's returned this season and his game
09:14time has been limited. And the official line at the moment is that he's also out with an ankle
09:20issue. But the cynics may say that it's clearing away for a January move because it's difficult
09:26because obviously, you've got these injuries, Danny Welbert being out injured. You kind of
09:30think that would be an opportunity for Ferguson to really step up and take the mantle in that
09:35striker position. But it hasn't really happened for one reason or the other. He hasn't managed to
09:40put running games together and get his scoring run back up again. So it would not be a shock,
09:47I don't think, if he does move in January. But it's a difficult one for the decision makers
09:51at Brighton because they probably don't want to sell him or loan him, I should say, to a Premier
09:56League rival because that could hinder them in the league. I know Chelsea and Man Utd have been
10:01linked. And you never know, obviously, it could come down to fine margins where they're finishing
10:05the league, especially Man Utd, who obviously are having a poor season. Probably Brighton
10:12wouldn't want to strengthen them in the transfer market. So it's an odd one. But when Hudson was
10:17asked about it, he said, first of all, he needs to get back on the pitch. He won't discuss the
10:21rumours in public. He thinks it's very important that the player knows the idea, that we know the
10:25idea from the player. And it's most important to be honest to each other to find the right solution
10:28for the club and also for the player. And he's really happy that Evan's in his squad. He's
10:32hoping that he's back on the pitch as soon as possible. So yeah, it's a difficult one. But I
10:37wouldn't be surprised if he does go on loan in January to get some minutes again, because he's
10:42still a highly talented player. A long contract at Brighton until June 2029. And Brighton have no
10:48need to sell him. So I think if he was to go, a loan move would be most likely. I think that would
10:54help all parties, I think. Well, this Saturday sees the Albion FA Cup third round action at
11:01Championship Outfit Norwich City. Deren, what kind of Brighton team do you expect to see at
11:05Carrow Road? Do you reckon there'll be heavy rotation? And how do you rate the Seagulls'
11:09chances of progress in the FA Cup this season? I think there's a great chance for a bit of
11:14silverware for him in this. Yeah, yeah. I think you're right. I think most Albion fans now,
11:20if they are going to be around this mid-table mark, they'd love to see Brighton go really
11:25strong in the FA Cup. But as far as the team selection goes, it's really tough. I was just
11:31playing around, I saw the question on the podcast, and I was just playing around with a potential 11
11:36and it's a potential Brighton 11 for this game. And it's very difficult to know which way he's
11:42going to go for this. I would imagine that Jason Steele could be in goal. And then Lamptey in for
11:50Joel Veltman. It depends whether he wants to risk Van Geck with all the injuries. So there could be
11:54an opportunity for Rory McConville, who's a young Ireland international. He's actually played twice
12:01for Northern Ireland, but he's yet to make his debut for Brighton, but very highly thought of
12:04and very, very good defender. Adam Webster I expect to start, Estupiñan. There could be also
12:10a debut for Diogo Gomes as well, who's the Paraguay signing. He joined on the 1st of January,
12:1612 million from Inter Miami. So look out for that one that he could be playing in midfield.
12:22Whether he rests for Lever or not, I'm not sure. I expect Yancuba Minte to start as well. And then
12:29you could see Soli March as well. Soli March could be back for his first start. He's made a
12:33couple of appearances from the bench. And again, it's just whether he wants to risk Pedro Matoma
12:39and how he sees them in training this week, how their fitness levels are. So it's going to be an
12:46interesting start in XI. So I'm quite intrigued to see how he goes for this one. We've got the
12:51press conference tomorrow that I'll be going to. So we'll have a bit more on the Sussex World
12:55website about injury updates and potential plans and get more of a feel for who might be in this
13:02start in XI to face Norwich. Excellent. Brilliant plug for the website as well,
13:06I like your work. And we're going to take a quick break. And when we come back,
13:09we're going to talk all things Crawley Town. Welcome back to part two. And before we talk
13:14about Crawley Town's game at Barnsley on Saturday, we are going to look back at the Reds' festive
13:19period. And it was certainly a packed one for Rob Elliott's men with his side playing five
13:23League One matches in 13 days. A lot to fit in there, Mark. But how did the Reds equip
13:28themselves over Christmas and New Year? Not very well at all.
13:32Next question. No, to me, it was a tough, tough, I mean, they had a horrible fixture
13:37list on that. Birmingham at home on the Monday night, which was moved forward from the Saturday,
13:44or moved back, moved back from the Saturday, from the Saturday originally. So they had a
13:48shorter time to prepare between that and Boxing Day. Birmingham, I thought they played well
13:53without really threatening Birmingham. They defended really well. Dion Conroy was back,
13:58which was a huge bonus. And he played really well, showed what they've been missing with him
14:02in defence. But they lost one nil. Jay Stansfield, who cost four times as much as the whole Crawley
14:08squad, scored the winner. It was a good occasion. But yeah, they played well, but just didn't do
14:16quite enough. And Birmingham just had that one bit of quality that separated the sides.
14:21Boxing Day is a day to forget. They lost three nil. We changed the game a little bit,
14:26made a few changes to the side. I think it was just the rest of a few players,
14:32obviously, thinking of they had Exeter and then Charlton in the next week. Didn't work what he
14:38did and what Rob Elliott did. And they lost three nil. And it could have been a hell of a lot more
14:42if Leyonard didn't sort of ease off towards the end. And then Exeter away, they 45 minutes,
14:49the best football Crawleys played all season. They were four, one up at halftime. Incredible. They
14:54were great goals. Will Swans, in particular, was a really good ball from Conroy in the deep.
15:00Sort of semi-reminiscent of Don Telford's goal at Hartlepool, his famous one where a die
15:06kicked the long ball. He took it down beautifully and rounded the keeper and slid home. But then
15:11second half, it was a mixture of Crawley being awful and Exeter suddenly being really good.
15:19But whether that was because Crawley allowed them to be really good,
15:23I don't know. But, yeah, they came back and got the equaliser in injury time to make it four all.
15:28As soon as it went four, two and then four, three and the decision, it shouldn't have been a third
15:33goal. It was a foul on Jojo Wolcott. He was bundled over direct from a corner. But as soon as
15:39that went in, you knew where it was going and it was disappointing. It felt like a defeat in the
15:43end, I think, for the Crawley fans. And then you had Charlton, which was absolutely shambolic.
15:48And they didn't even play. It wasn't the club's fault. I mean, it was never going to be on,
15:54but the referee messed about. There was a lack of communication, what was going on,
15:59and then called it off 20 minutes before the kickoff after three inspections when it was
16:03going to continue to rain. It was utterly ridiculous why it wasn't called off earlier.
16:07So for that whole Christmas week, it was quite a bit of a shame for Crawley. Only one point and
16:14now and then we're going to get onto the Barnsley game, aren't we?
16:17Yeah, we are. And Saturday saw the Reds fall to a 3-0 defeat at playoff chase in Barnsley.
16:22The result leaves Crawley 21st in League One and five points' drift of safety.
16:26And it doesn't sound that it was much better at Oakwell, Mark, by the tone of your voice.
16:31No, it was a game that was very poor. And I think it's the first time we've properly seen Rob Elliott
16:37not slam his players, but certainly criticise them in his post-match. He was in the stands
16:42because he was serving a one-game suspension and that included a game at Gateshead. I think
16:48he picked up a booking and then he's got a couple here in Crawley. But yeah, it was a very, very
16:55poor performance. And it looked a little bit like men against boys, really. Barnsley looked like a
17:01good professional outfit. They did a proper job on Crawley. Crawley looked good in the last 20
17:06minutes, but obviously they were three-nil down. And yeah, I think Rob Elliott said afterwards,
17:11it's no good playing well when you're three-nil down. You've got to play well from the start.
17:14They gave them a three-nil lead and then just sort of, yeah, the keeper pulled off a couple
17:20of good saves. They could have got a couple of late consolation goals, but they didn't. And
17:25that's the second three-nil defeat to Barnsley this year after losing three-nil earlier in the season
17:29at Broadfield Stadium. Well, post-match, Elliott gave an update on transfer rumors surrounding
17:35two Crawley midfielders and sensationally revealed that one of them will be leaving the club in the
17:39January transfer window. Who did Elliott discuss, Sam, and who looks set to leave the Rebs?
17:45Jay Williams, which I don't think will come as a surprise to anyone. I think we knew that a while
17:49ago that he would be on the move and it's now been confirmed by Rob Elliott that he will be
17:53leaving the club. He also clarified the situation with Ronan Darcy. Both players were part of the
18:01promotion winning side last season and have been rumoured to leave for quite a while. And following
18:06the three-nil defeat to Barnsley on Saturday, Elliott was asked about both players' futures and
18:11he said, I think Jay Williams will be leaving. He's out of contract and he thinks there's been interest
18:16in him. He thinks Jay will be leaving the club. Whilst Darcy has had an issue with his groin and
18:21be unavailable, he's managed it previously and got through the games, but he's just got to a point
18:25when obviously he can't keep playing. It's a real strange one and the player won't mind him saying
18:29that he doesn't like missing games, but he's got a lump in the groin, which is restricting his
18:33mobility. It's not an injury as such, it's just more of an issue, but he's still fired up in terms
18:39of that and just wants to get back to playing again. So, it's an interesting one with him.
18:43There's obviously no confirmation about any moves for Darcy, but it has been confirmed, as I say,
18:48that Williams will be on the move. Yeah, not much of a shock there, I don't think. But Crawley did
18:53announce their first signing of the Dren Utrenta window last week and this player made his red
18:58stadium off the bench at Barnsley on Saturday. Who did Crawley make their first winter signing,
19:01Mark, and how did he get on against the Tykes? So, it was Ben Radcliffe and eagle-eyed Sam
19:07Morton got that story up during the Birmingham game, wasn't it, Sam, I think. We were sat there
19:11and you saw the rumour about him. And then, yeah, literally as the transfer window opened,
19:16they announced him. He'd been at Gateshead with Rob Elliott before on loan from Derby,
19:22so Elliott obviously knew him, likes him. He's signed for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal.
19:30He's a 20-year-old who hasn't quite made it through to a championship club. So, it's sort
19:36of like a bit of what you expect from Crawley, a youngster that hasn't quite made it, got into
19:40first-team football yet. So, yeah, Rob Elliott said he's big, strong, comfortable on the ball.
19:46He always wants to get on the ball, but defends really well and hopefully can be a great asset
19:50for the club. And he's a great lad and good character. And Johnny Dean, who covered the
19:56game for us on Saturday against Barnsley, he actually gave him the highest rating against
20:00Barnsley, which was seven out of ten. I mean, that says everything, that the highest rating
20:03is seven out of ten. But he said he impressed on his Crawley debut, both offensively and
20:07defensively. He decided he looked more assured in his presence and they created more chances.
20:11So, he can play in defence or midfield and with, like Sam just said, Williams going,
20:18they need someone else who can be defensively in midfield just to fill that gap. So,
20:22looks like he could be a good sign-in for Crawley.
20:24Yeah, fingers crossed. Speaking of player movements, Anthony Papadopoulos was recalled
20:29to bolster the Red squad after an excellent loan spell at Maidstone. The midfielder bagged five
20:34goals in 15 games for the National League South outfit. What did Elliott have to say about
20:38Papadopoulos' return, Sam? Are we likely to see more transfer movements from Crawley in the winter
20:43window?
20:45Yes, I think on Papadopoulos, it was obviously a surprising one when it was announced that he was
20:50coming back. But I think he's been really good whilst on loan at Maidstone, scoring five goals
20:55in 15 appearances. He was actually in line to start against Charlton before the match was
20:59postponed, obviously due to a Walsall pitch. But Elliott said he's been absolutely superb out on
21:05loan. He's someone that we really like and he's a fantastic professional that trains really well
21:09and has a goal in him. After losing a couple of players, he brings a wide option or someone that
21:13can play wing-back. So, obviously, he's really versatile. That definitely seems like one of the
21:17reasons why he's been brought back in. He's played a lot of positions, but he can be effective at
21:21wing-back. They felt that he just deserved this opportunity as he gives absolutely everything,
21:25runs himself into the ground with high intensity, consistently he fires every ball and he's got
21:29high quality and he can find the goal. It's an interesting one because Elliott basically
21:34pinpointed that for Crawley to survive, they need to be aggressive and on the front foot.
21:39He thinks that Papadopoulos is perfect for that and he thinks that they can help them
21:43across the whole pitch, really. Not just obviously scoring goals, but you can really provide a
21:48bit of aggression defensively as well and obviously defend from the front, which is
21:51obviously really important. So, yeah, I think it's definitely an intriguing one. Hopefully, he does
21:56hit the ground running for Crawley and continue that form that he found out on loan. In terms of
22:01other transfers, with Williams set to leave, they obviously need that covering defensive midfield.
22:06But new signing Ben Ratcliffe impressed, as Mark said, when he came on against Barnsley. So, he
22:11might fit in there. Up front, Tolis Romney and Will Swan have done well, but it'd be good to get
22:16some cover there as well, in case one of those pick up an injury. Defensively, they've struggled
22:21with injuries this season and they seem to just need more experience, I think, to get over the
22:26line in some of these games. If things are bad, to manage to stem the tide, because obviously
22:31there's been quite a few games where they've conceded a lot of goals this season, even when
22:34obviously at Exeter when they were winning, they managed to draw four-all. I think if you had a bit
22:39more experience in that game, they might have managed to hold on. So, that could be something
22:43they look to do. Obviously, he is a very young side and we know that that is what Wagney want,
22:47but if they want to stay in the division, they need to bring a bit more experience in.
22:52Obviously, with Dion Conroy back, that is a bit like a new signing. He was obviously
22:56brilliant in his first game back against Birmingham and still probably working his
23:00way back to full match fitness as well. So, there's definitely room to be positive and hopeful.
23:06I think they've obviously still got that game in hand, so make sure they win that.
23:09But if they don't, then it could get a little bit ropey.
23:13A bit dicey, yes. Well, the Reds now have a two-week break owing to Wigan Athletics'
23:18involvement in the third round of the FA Cup. Crawley were due to meet Wigan this weekend,
23:21but that game has subsequently been rearranged to Tuesday, February 18th. Do you think this
23:27break will be a welcome one, Mark? Has it come at a good or a bad time for the Reds?
23:31Um, for me, it's become a very good time. But yes, for the Reds, I think it has as well.
23:36Elliot actually said, because normally when you ask a manager when they have a break,
23:42oh, would you rather be playing? Oh, yeah, absolutely. We'd rather be playing. He was like,
23:45no, need the rest. We need the rest. He keeps going on about how they've had the worst possible
23:50Christmas period, fixtures-wise, more than any other club. So, yeah, it's a very welcome rest.
23:58They're happy with the break. They need the rest. We need to reset and we need to reset our
24:01standards. And I think this was directly after the Barnsley game he said this.
24:05And yeah, what was interesting, he said, he still thinks they'll be fine. He thinks they're in a
24:10fine position, even though they're five points adrift in the relegation zone. But he said,
24:14we won't be fine if we see ourselves on these terms, referring to the Barnsley game. But from
24:22now on, it's going to be on my terms. So, it's interesting what he said there, what he means by
24:27that. So, he's obviously going to take a bit more control, be a bit more on it, I imagine. I don't
24:31know. Not that I'm saying that he hasn't been on it. Yeah. But maybe now. Now he's going to get a
24:35couple of his own players in that he wants and it's going to be his team and he's really going
24:39to stamp his authority on it. And that's what they've got to do. They need to get out of this
24:43and they need to get some wins quickly now. And this break is ideal for that. And it gives a
24:47couple of players time to recover from little knocks and they're like Harry Forster and
24:51Addy Adeyemo.
25:21Should Brighton have no problems with this one?
25:36I think they should have no problems. I think it will be a 2-0 win. It's a comfortable 2-0 win.
25:42Although Norwich will be high, actually. They had an incredible win at the weekend. I think
25:47they were losing right up until the 91st minute and scored twice in injury time. So, they'll
25:52probably still be riding that wave. So, it could be a tough game. But I think Brighton should have
25:56enough. And finally, Mark, how do you see this one going? Oh, I'm going to go for an upset. Why
26:01not? I think I can see if Brighton do go out with a slightly weaker side than that, just to give
26:08players a few minutes than that. It could backfire a little bit. So, I'm going to go 1-0. 1-0 Norwich.
26:15Blimey. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen. And we should also mention that Brighton
26:18travelled to Ipswich in the Premier League on Thursday. So, yeah, look at Sussex World website.
