Jonathan Ashworth has urged the prime minister to call a general election “now”. Whilst campaigning in Blackpool alongside Rachel Reeves, the shadow paymaster general claimed that “weak Rishi Sunak is running scared,” and that whilst the prime minister can “delay the choice the British people want to make, but [he] cannot in the end run away from their verdict.” Report by Covellm. 00:00 We're here today because we're working hard on these local elections, but we should have
00:05 been working hard on a general election, shouldn't we? But Rishi Sunak, weak Rishi Sunak, he's
00:13 running scared. He's running scared because he hasn't been able to stop the boats. He's
00:19 running scared because he hasn't been able to fix the problems in the NHS and there's
00:24 £7 million still on a waiting list. He's running scared because he's taxing working
00:31 families more, he's taxing pensioners more. Well I say to Rishi Sunak, you can delay the
00:39 choice the British people want to make, but you cannot in the end run away from their
00:46 verdict. Stop running scared. Stop running scared of Chris Webber in Blackpool. Stop
00:52 running scared of the British people. Stop running scared and declare now a general election.
00:58 If you listen to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, and we heard it in the Budget
01:04 last month, the taxes are coming down, the economy has turned a corner, that their plan
01:11 is working. Well all that goes to show is how out of touch they are with the reality
01:17 faced by ordinary British people. Things might look alright from 10,000 feet up in Rishi
01:22 Sunak's helicopter, but down here on planet earth and here in Blackpool South, people
01:28 are still being squeezed by the Conservatives' cost of living crisis.
