00:00AEW release the CM Punk CCTV footage on Dynamite.
00:05Punk's response.
00:06The Bucks' response.
00:08And everyone else's response.
00:11Including mine.
00:12I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:18It's been a tribalistic recent time in wrestling.
00:25Fans have divided themselves into two borderline toxic camps.
00:29The righteous, who think CM Punk's pipe bomb promo is better than Steiner math.
00:33And stupid idiots, who think math is better than pipe bomb.
00:37But now we can move on from that.
00:38After last week's PFK tournament, where I defeated Luke Owen fair and square, the pipe
00:43bomb was objectively proved as better.
00:46I want us all to be positive about wrestling now.
00:49We're living through the most exciting period of a generation.
00:53We should be grateful for that, and we should support each other.
00:58So here's some footage of Luke Owen being lame.
01:15This is the mixed messaging we've had over the last week from AEW.
01:19Following CM Punk's Ariel Hawane interview on April Fool's Day, where he said some
01:23nice things, but mostly negative things, about AEW and its President Tony Khan after
01:28he was fired for cause from there last summer.
01:31Adam Copeland opened the episode of Dynamite two days later with a rah-rah speech about
01:36how we should all be positive about wrestling.
01:38A sentiment totally undermined in the very next show, where AEW aired the CCTV footage
01:44of the incident The Got Punk fired.
01:46The online wrestling discourse version of chucking a Molotov cocktail into a dumpster
01:51full of cooking oil.
01:5240 minutes into the broadcast, AEW EVPs are both real, and kayfabe behind the scenes position
01:58Matthew and Nicholas Jackson had a pre-filmed interview where they spoke about the last
02:02time they fought FTR, at last August's All In, in which they lost.
02:07They blamed this loss on them having to deal with the fallout of Punk's altercation with
02:13Jack Perry.
02:14While they never actually said Punk's name, they quoted his previous promo line.
02:18If you've got a problem with Jack Perry, you're probably the problem.
02:22They called Perry a scapegoat in this situation, as he hasn't appeared in AEW since, and
02:27even theorised FTR were the masterminds behind the incident, before Matthew stopped Nick
02:32saying, you can't just spread rumours on a national forum, that's very unprofessional.
02:37Which is likely a shot at Punk, but also a hypocritical heel shot at themselves, I think.
02:43Do they know what the story is?
02:45This was all to build their fourth clash with FTR at Dynasty in two weeks, so at least they
02:49did try to use this to promote a match they can actually deliver on not using the other
02:54promotion stars.
02:56The actual footage was eerily silent, as it's just a CCTV recording.
03:00You see Jack Perry standing in gorilla position after his All In pre-show match against Hook
03:05and Samoa Joe pacing up and down ahead of his opener against Punk.
03:12Punk then walks up to Perry, where he appears to talk to him for 20 seconds.
03:16Then Punk shoves Perry and gets him in a front choke in 6 seconds of hot action, before
03:21Joe and several others pull them apart.
03:23Punk seems to swing a right hook, but doesn't really get anyone.
03:27And then he starts gesturing aggressively at someone behind the monitors.
03:31Other notable mentions, we got the AEW TV debut of Distressed Chris Hero, the poor guy,
03:37and Super Chill Malakai Black, who just strolled in with a coffee at the end.
03:41In his public statement on Fyre & Punk last September, Khan had said the incident was
03:46regrettable, and it endangered people backstage.
03:49That includes the production staff, the people who help put the show on every week, innocent
03:54people who had nothing to do with it.
03:56I've been going to wrestling shows for over 30 years, I've been producing them on this
04:01network for nearly 4 years.
04:03Never in all that time have I ever felt until last Sunday that my security, my safety, my
04:09life was in danger at a wrestling show.
04:13Meanwhile, Punk had said his version in the Ariel Hawane interview.
04:17He had asked Perry why he had to do this dumb internet s*** after Perry had made an insider
04:21shot at Punk during his match, and I thought I was doing the responsible thing.
04:25I just choked someone a little bit.
04:27The responsible thing there.
04:30Causing a backstage fight minutes before the biggest show in company history.
04:34Punk had rather hypocritically accused Hangman Page of being unprofessional for jeopardising
04:38the company's million dollar pay-per-view, double or nothing, in that same interview.
04:43Also in the Ariel Hawane chat, Punk said that he told Khan, you're a clown, I quit, after
04:48the brawl.
04:49Which might be what he's shouting at the end of that clip.
04:52Punk claims that's the last time he ever saw Khan in person.
04:56So what do we know for sure from the objective Godseye proof of CCTV?
05:02Punk started the fight, he did get Perry in a choke, and it lasted 6 seconds.
05:07So what do we know for sure about the subjective, emotional proof of fan reaction?
05:11This has trudged up a lot of bad feelings, reopened old wounds, and, in my opinion, has
05:17significantly backfired.
05:19Just look at Tony Schiavone's face when the show cut to the announcer's desk after
05:23that segment.
05:24He's having WCW flashbacks.
05:27The backfiring started in real time.
05:29While the footage itself was played without sound on the broadcast, a fan recording shows
05:33the crowd audibly chanting CM Punk in the audience.
05:37The crowd would chant CM Punk against the heel bucks later in the show too, something
05:41this angle has encouraged.
05:44It also made Punk the No. 1 trend on X, not anything or anyone actually involved in AEW
05:50right now.
05:51Weirdly, in AEW's upload of the segment to YouTube, the CCTV footage, aka the entire
05:56point of the segment, is gone.
05:59AEW have also been on a copyright strike spree on social media, with second-hand uploads
06:04of the footage being removed.
06:05The Young Bucks seemingly acknowledged this reaction, as well as referencing comments
06:09from FDR's Cash Wheeler earlier in the night, posting EV Petty, but they weren't the only
06:15ones to reply.
06:16Taking to his Instagram story, Punk himself posted a picture of former US President George
06:21Bush with the message Mission Accomplished, a speech where he famously declared victory
06:27in Iraq for most of the fighting and casualties still to come.
06:32In kayfabe, the heel bucks representing heel AEW management made CM Punk a babyface.
06:39In AEW's own kayfabe terms, Punk standing up to then-heel Perry, having a brief altercation
06:47far less violent than other backstage angles we see every week, is a babyface act.
06:53In shoot terms, Punk's version of events from the Helwani interview pretty much matched
06:58the footage.
06:59While it was unprofessional and a fireable offence, where's the lie?
07:04If anything, it casts Tony's version in a different light.
07:07I'm not denying an angry Punk yelling at you and being held back is a scary, intimidating
07:12incident.
07:13But fearing for your life, based on this, is hyperbole.
07:19What do you all think about the Punk footage and AEW's decision to air it?
07:24Let me know in the comments down below.
07:25But it's Thursday!
07:27You know what that means.
07:29My review of AEW Dynamite… in about 5 minutes.
07:33Samoa Joe was meant to start the episode wrestling Dustin Runnels in an AEW Championship Eliminator
07:38match.
07:39A nice idea following his brother's WWE title win on Sunday.
07:42But Swerve Strickland had other ideas, opening the episode the same way they ended the last
07:47one with a Joe vs Swerve brawl.
07:50Strickland took Joe out on the ramp and speared him through a table propped on the barricade,
07:54forcing the opener to be postponed until later in the night for medics to check over Joe.
07:59Both guys are doing a great job at getting over the intensity of their feud.
08:02The commentators added to the chaos, making it feel like the show suddenly had to be made
08:06up on the fly with the opening contest scrapped.
08:09They played a recap of the No Longer Best Friends angle from last week, and reshuffled
08:13the TNT Championship match of Adam Copeland defending against Penta to go on next.
08:18They wrestled through two commercial breaks in a steadily building match, with a very
08:21exciting final few minutes.
08:23Snap power Sam on the apron, accidental spear of Alex Abrahantes, a Penta Code right off
08:28the top rope, but Copeland countered a Penta Springboard midair with a spear, giving him
08:33the win.
08:34Seeing that nobody else is talking about this that I've seen, I'm going to assume the
08:37brief flash of what appears to be a venue map on the screen during this match was a
08:42production mistake.
08:43Or maybe that's where the rest of the punk footage is.
08:47Damn, it's the three punk problem.
08:50Copeland was jumped by the House of Blacks Julia Hart and Brodie King afterwards for
08:53Willow Nightingale of all people to make the save, furthering her title feud with Hart.
08:57For a moment backstage later on, Stokely was trying to build Willow vs Edge for the TNT
09:02title, but it sadly turned into the far more logical Willow and Edge vs Julia and Brodie
09:06next week, in a battle of the TNT and TBS titles.
09:10That's right, it's going to be the first ever look at all the great promotional work
09:15we do for our valued TV partners Warner Bros Discovery during the rights renegotiation
09:23period match.
09:24We then got the CM Punk footage, which I've both already covered earlier and now want
09:28to forget ever happened, also known as Shivani.
09:32As in, I'm trying to Shivani this away so hard.
09:35FDR cut an impromptu in-ring promo afterwards, asking the Bucks why they would show this,
09:39because everyone just wants to move on, and how Dax and Cash do what they do for the wrestlers
09:43and the fans, turning the promotion of AEW heel in both kayfabe and reality some more.
09:49Dax's line about being thankful for AEW because, if not for them, they'd still be
09:53shaving each other's backs was the right kind of shot at WWE.
09:57Just one line and a larger promo focused on building a match, and one about the pre-Paul
10:02Levesque era.
10:03The pre-Levesque era.
10:05And the final part was an effective sell of their dynasty clash as it told the actual
10:09story.
10:10Who is the best tag team on the planet?
10:13But don't worry if you want more second place insecurity, because the very next segment
10:18also rose to WWE's bait.
10:21After a hype package for Bryan Danielson vs Will Ospreay, a genuine dream match for which
10:25they've done a simple, focused build, there is daylight between these two wrestlers at
10:29the top of their craft, which one will emerge victorious at Dynasty, AEW decided to dedicate
10:35the opening few minutes of Will's onstage promo to some comments Triple H made at a
10:39media scrum.
10:40Levesque had implied this year's free agents chose AEW over WWE because it's a lighter
10:46schedule, and they're afraid of the grind.
10:49He doesn't want those sorts of people in WWE.
10:52To me, that's obviously disingenuous, and Levesque's trying to create a false narrative
10:56around AEW's actual wins this year.
11:00The best response would be for Ospreay to keep doing what he's been doing, putting
11:04on incredible in-ring matches on TV week after week.
11:07But instead, AEW sent him out to reply to Triple H's comments.
11:12Comments Unforgotten Triple H had even made because it's
11:15been a pretty busy week with everything else.
11:18It confuses casual fans, it distracts from the better, kayfabe story, wastes valuable
11:24TV time, and tells rather than shows.
11:29These sorts of replies need to be in interviews or on social media, not on your nationally
11:33broadcast wrestling programs, otherwise you're just TNA from 2009.
11:38It really shows that WWE is getting to AEW.
11:42And then came Chris Jericho's storyline.
11:44Oh, actually, maybe the over-the-top interpromotional stuff isn't so bad.
11:48He teamed with Hook and Shibata to take on Shane Taylor promotions, and lost it for them
11:52when he stopped Hook tagging in after Shibata accidentally kicked Jericho in the face.
11:57I don't care about any of this.
11:58Hook has fallen so far since January.
12:00Jericho's character is stale.
12:02And their backstage segment earlier was the first time I noticed some terrible zooming
12:08camera work.
12:09Is AEW actually trying to become Bad Era WWE?
12:12The best part was Shibata complimenting Renee's necklace via a translator app.
12:16Moxley match confirmed.
12:18Okada then beat enhancement talent Christiana Agento.
12:21PAC came down for a brawl afterwards, but the Bucks jumped him for a three on one attack
12:25as the crowd chanted for CM Punk.
12:27That's how spectacularly this angle has backfired.
12:30The crowd is chanting CM Punk against the AEW executive Jacksons.
12:35In purely kayfabe terms, your booking has made your audience cheer for the other promotion's
12:40babyface.
12:41FTR ran down for the save, but Okada took them out with a chair to stand tall.
12:45Tony Storm laid a Champagne Charleston toast trap for Thunder Rosa.
13:01They definitely just named that to trip me up.
13:03Throwing a glass of bubbly in her eyes and smudging her face paint, Deonna Perazzo tried
13:07to help Rosa, but Thunder pushed her away.
13:10This turned into Mariah May vs Anna Jay.
13:12There were no stakes or real heat for this.
13:14Deonna got most of it, but Mariah rolled through at the end for the pin.
13:17Jay attacked Mariah after losing, but Stardom's Mina Shurikawa made the save for the heel,
13:21got them both Champagne, and then kissed May.
13:25Nobody knew what was happening.
13:27Then Mercedes Monet got a sit-down interview with Alex Marvez, with more crash zoom filming
13:32than Modern Family.
13:33But where that show at least had multiple shots to cut to, this only had the one.
13:38Zooming in and out of Mercedes' face like it was Kevin Dunn getting off on a Cesaro
13:43swing.
13:44The lights again said nothing of substance, the lights cut out, and Monet was mystery
13:48attacked.
13:49It could be Julia.
13:50It could be Willow.
13:51It could be Statlander on Stokely's orders.
13:53Whatever it is, it's taking too long to get to the Wrestling Factory.
13:57Even the main event of this episode had its flaws.
13:59Initially, I really liked the booking.
14:01Samoa Joe is an expert at being wounded or scared, but still incredibly intimidating
14:05at the start of the show.
14:10And with that, he felt like a bully, a great way to get people invested in Dustin's story.
14:15Unfortunately, Dustin never got enough to really make you believe.
14:19And for the finish, he just got that AEW World title to use on Joe right in front of the
14:25referee.
14:26It made Dustin look stupid, using a spot more suited to a blood feud where you don't care
14:30about getting DQ'd, rather than what this story was.
14:34Trying to win a world title like your brother just did, which means you should absolutely
14:39not get DQ'd.
14:41It was really just a lazy way to get a heel victory.
14:44Joe used the title instead, behind the referees, back to win.
14:47Joe continued the beatdown afterwards, but Swerve attacked him and posed with the belt.
14:51Joe and Swerve's feud was the only successful thing on this episode, and even then, it didn't
14:56really move forward.
14:57This is by far the worst episode of AEW I've ever seen.
15:02Damaging.
15:03Petty.
15:04Backfiring.
15:0520%.
15:07But I've got my own CM Punk footage of me reacting to me reacting to CM Punk.
15:14Here's a clip.
