Martin Dempster reports from the first day at The Masters from Augusta National.
Transcript
00:00Hello, it's Martin Dempster, the Scotsman Golf Correspondent here, coming to you from
00:06Augusta in Georgia at the end of the opening day in the 88th Masters. Had been feared that
00:15much of the play today might have been wiped out by bad weather. We did have a two and
00:20a half hour delay at the start. However, it didn't turn out to be as bad as had been anticipated.
00:29The wind got up in the afternoon, which certainly created a real stiff test in the tree-lined
00:35fairways of Augusta National. The best score of the day, that was shot by Bryson DeChambeau,
00:43the man who once reckoned that his personal par here was a 67. Beat that for the first
00:51time, as he shot a 700 par 65, which was a very impressive effort, with Live Golf CEO
01:02and Commissioner Greg Norman on the property for the second day in a row. However, lurking
01:09ominously already is the 2022 winner and world number one Scottish Sheffler. He shot a very,
01:20very impressive bogey-free 6 under 66 to set a shot off that lead, with Danny Willett,
01:27the 2016 champion, producing another good round with a 4 under 68, which came in his
01:36first event since undergoing shoulder surgery following the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth
01:44in September. The winner of that event, Ryan Fox, he's handily placed after a 3 under par effort,
01:52and Rory McIlroy, he shot a 71, which was his best opening round here since 2018.
02:02Defending champion John Ram finished bogey-bogey for a 73, and following that delay due to the
02:11weather, a number of players were unable to complete their opening round. They include
02:16five-time champion Tiger Woods. He played pretty solid, I have to say, and he'll resume
02:23on 1 under par with Dane Nicolae Hoziard, a member of Europe's Ryder Cup winning team
02:29in Rome last year, 5 under with 3 holes to play. Exciting three days ahead, and the weather
02:37set to be fair for the rest of the season's opening major. To keep up to date with the
