00:38 The only problem is, this man is a Gulf War veteran, and he is extremely dangerous.
00:45 Naturally, he doesn't take too kindly to some punks breaking into his house, and the thieves are forced to defend themselves.
00:51 Of course, there's a major twist near the end that's a bit fantastical, but, for the most part,
00:56 Don't Breathe tells a pretty realistic story about some people trapped in a house with a trained killer.

04:19 She is then targeted by a masked man who seems intent on getting inside and killing her.

05:01 There is certainly a degree of fantasy to the film, but the idea of birds attacking us isn't as far-fetched as you may think.
05:08 In fact, the movie was inspired by a real event that occurred in 1961.
05:13 The birds around Capitola, California were suffering from the effects of toxic algae,
05:18 and began attacking the residents by pelting their homes and dive-bombing cars.
05:22 According to one report, it seemed straight out of a horror movie.
05:26 Well, here is that horror movie.

05:30 "A bunch of crows attacked the school kids. It's the end of the world."

10:56 we can assure you that driving around in creepy towns and walking into random houses won't end well.

11:08 "Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing."
11:16 The fear of man-eating sharks. A trend started by Jaws is a tad exaggerated,
11:21 as there have only been roughly a dozen confirmed attacks by great white sharks in the United States since the film was released.
11:28 However, this doesn't mean that you won't be eaten alive when swimming in the ocean.
11:32 The open water has always been a terrifying place, as there are a multitude of things that can hurt or kill you.
11:38 Steven Spielberg and his brilliant mechanical shark took this idea and ran with it, striking gold.
11:44 Its quiet little town setting struck a chord with audiences, making sure they stayed out of the water forever.
11:51 "You're gonna need a bigger boat."
11:53 7. The Strangers
11:55 "I haven't heard a dog bark. I've heard a car pass. Nothing. Just us and them."
12:04 A common theme we are seeing is that horror can manifest itself in unexpected, safe spaces.
12:10 The Strangers not only covers the home invasion aspect, which has scared everyone at some point,
12:15 but the possible danger of living in a seemingly quiet rural setting.
12:19 While inspired by his own experiences and some true home invasion stories such as the Manson Family Murders,
12:25 director Brian Bertino's original story shocked audiences with its brutal message.
12:30 As we watch young couple James and Kristen slowly realize that the horror is all too real,
12:35 as they are being terrorized by masked figures at their summer home, we also start to realize we could be next.

12:49 6. Scream
12:51 "There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie."
12:56 While the improbable and ridiculous masked slasher craze died out in the 80s,

13:05 We were also obsessed with blaming violent movies, music, and video games as the cause of real violence.
13:11 Wes Craven saw this goldmine and gave us the modern classic Scream.
13:16 This blood-soaked satire follows a group of teens obsessed with violent, over-the-top horror films.
13:22 They end up becoming the victims of a masked killer that may be one of their own.
13:27 Oh, and if you have any hope of surviving, you'd better be good at horror trivia.

13:55 The brutal realism of The Last House on the Left was so intense,
13:59 the original poster and trailer kept reminding audiences it's only a movie.
14:04 Once again, Wes Craven was ahead of his time in stoking fear in his audience,
14:09 and while it may be only a movie, its real-life implications are disturbing.
14:13 Who needs monsters and demons when you have a gang of perverted, demented criminals?
14:18 Poor Mary and her friend learned the hard way not to talk to strangers.
14:23 With the girls assaulted, beaten, and left for dead,
14:26 Mary's family end up taking matters into their own hands in a bizarrely satisfying confrontation.

14:36 4. Psycho
14:38 "You have reason to believe that she came along this way and may have stopped in the area. Did she stop here?"

14:44 While the captured Norman Bates stares at us blankly,
14:47 his mother's voice in his head lets us know he "wouldn't even harm a fly."
14:52 Up until Psycho, killers in cinema always had a strong motive, or they were simply brutal monsters.
14:58 Norman Bates was an early depiction of mental illness, leading a psychopath to murder.
15:03 Poor Norman was such a sweet young man, so innocent and polite.
15:07 Nobody would expect that he's a peeping Tom, dresses up as his mother, and kills women while they shower.
15:13 The true horror here is that none of us is safe from anyone, not even the nice boy next door.

15:38 Urban legends make you squeamish for a reason.
15:40 They're supposedly based on real events, and their job is to scare you into thinking this happened to a friend of a friend,
15:46 and therefore could happen to you.
15:49 When a Stranger Calls relies heavily on the urban legend of the babysitter being stalked by a killer inside the house,
15:56 and succeeds in becoming a terrifying viewing experience for everyone.
16:00 We watch as the innocent teenager is tormented by phone calls from a psychopath.
16:04 Children helpless in their beds, and we're reminded of how many times we've been home alone,
16:09 not realizing someone could have been waiting for us upstairs.
16:14 "Leave me alone!"
16:15 "Jill, this is Sergeant Sacker. Listen to me. We've traced the call. It's coming from inside the house."
16:20 2. Misery
16:22 "Misery's return?"
16:24 "I know you didn't mean it when you killed her, and now you'll make it right."
16:29 This movie offers us a more outlandish premise.
16:32 A series of bad events and happenstance lead unlucky novelist Paul Sheldon to not only crash his car,
16:38 but to be rescued, nursed back to health, and then held hostage by his number one fan and deranged lunatic, Annie Wilkes.
16:46 And you might say to yourself that you're not a celebrity,
16:49 but then you realize that almost everyone today can be found via social media.
16:54 Being famous comes with its risks,
16:56 and of course Stephen King was thinking of his own status as a famous author when writing this,
17:02 but any one of us can have a stalker watching us somewhere.
