00:02 - Dakar 91, my first victory.
00:06 (dramatic music)
00:09 I've been in motorsports for 40 years
00:13 and finishing the Dakar 91 is the best memory
00:15 of all those years of motorsports.
00:18 Best memories because after four years,
00:23 I finally managed to win after an intense battle
00:26 with French rider Gilles Lallet and Thierry Magnaldi.
00:29 (dramatic music)
00:31 In fact, the race I'd only dreamt of taking part in
00:36 had become a race I'd just won.
00:38 And so the dream was more than accomplished.
00:42 (dramatic music)
00:44 I won it mainly before the rest day in Agadez.
00:51 There, a sandstorm kicked up
00:57 150 kilometers from the finish.
00:59 (dramatic music)
01:02 And actually we all lost the ideal track.
01:06 The ideal track was disappearing
01:07 as we went along because of the wind.
01:09 (dramatic music)
01:12 Everyone tried to follow more or less
01:17 the same route to Agadez.
01:18 But I had the feeling that I'd lost this track
01:22 and it was more on the right.
01:23 So instead of trying to continue on a medium heading
01:27 without seeing anything, I said to myself,
01:29 "No, I'm not going to do that.
01:31 "Take a straight 90 degree angle and you'll find the track."
01:35 I found it and I hung on to it.
01:37 I rode more slowly of course because there was a sandstorm
01:42 and that day I arrived 45 minutes ahead
01:44 of the second and third place riders.
01:47 And I took a good option for victory on the rest day.
01:49 (dramatic music)
01:56 Unfortunately, a few days later,
01:58 I had a problem with my shock absorbers that I broke.
02:00 The whole rear of the bike is destroyed.
02:04 The swing arm is broken at that point.
02:06 I thought I would lose even more time.
02:08 I thought I would lose the lead of the rally.
02:11 So a four minute gap is better than nothing.
02:13 So everything had to be redone
02:16 and I managed to keep enough of a lead
02:18 but it got tight at the end of the race.
02:23 I'm still today and it'll stay that way in any case.
02:26 It was the best sporting day of my life.
