This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the week ahead 22/04/2024

It’s going to be rather cool this week, especially for the middle of spring, and with that some frost is likely overnight as well as a bit of hill snow for Scotland too. Showers are most likely in the east until Friday when they will be more widespread ahead of a potentially unsettled weekend. Bringing you this weekend’s weather forecast is Alex Burkill.

00:00 Hello, very good day to you. It is the middle of spring but it's not always going to feel
00:04 like it this week with temperatures often several degrees below average. At the moment
00:09 we have high pressure towards the west of us and the jet stream is pushing over the
00:13 north of this but then plunging southwards across the country and with that we have some
00:18 cold air. Cold air towards the east of us is gradually going to push its way further
00:22 westwards across the UK as we go through this week and it's this that means our temperatures
00:27 are going to turn a little bit lower than they have been recently and add to that cool
00:32 feel so feeling not particularly like spring as I mentioned at the start. But if we go
00:37 back to the here and now and if we go through Tuesday morning a warm front bringing some
00:41 cloud and some drizzly rain across parts of eastern, south eastern England first thing.
00:46 Also a few outbreaks of rain across parts of Wales and south west England perhaps. Otherwise
00:50 quite a bit of dry weather around and where we have some clear skies it will turn a little
00:54 bit chilly, perhaps a touch of frost in the sheltered glens of Scotland but it is going
00:59 to turn colder as we go through the next few days. However through Tuesday itself then
01:04 quite a bit of cloud and still some drizzly rain across parts of eastern, south eastern
01:08 England a lot of that pushing its way southwards as we go through the day so turning a bit
01:12 drier brighter later on. A few showery outbreaks possible across parts of Wales and the south
01:16 west and maybe one or two showers towards the north east of England too but on the whole
01:20 many places staying largely fine. Across many parts of England and Wales there will be some
01:25 sunny spells breaking out quite a few of these towards the north and west. Across Scotland
01:29 and Northern Ireland it's largely sunny skies here plenty of blue skies. Bit of a west east
01:34 split in our temperatures on Tuesday. Towards the east temperatures suppressed high single
01:40 figures or low double digits generally here. Further west though several degrees higher
01:44 than this some places getting to the mid to high teens so not feeling too bad pleasantly
01:48 warm here but markedly colder further east. As we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday
01:54 and we have high pressure towards the west of us but low pressure towards the east. This
01:58 is gradually going to feed its way in as we go through the middle part of the week so
02:01 a bit more unsettled bit blustery and a bit showery towards eastern parts as we go through
02:06 Wednesday. Starting off though a bit chillier than Tuesday morning a greater chance of seeing
02:11 a touch of frost across parts of Scotland, Northern England and generally some prone
02:15 spots across central southern England and Wales as well. Temperatures widely low single
02:20 figures so a cool start to the day for sure. As we go through the day itself though plenty
02:25 of fine weather towards the west lots of sunshine here yes there'll be some cloud at times but
02:30 generally fine and sunny. Bit more cloud towards the east and a greater chance of seeing some
02:35 showers here. They could be quite frequent across the eastern parts in particular as
02:39 we go through the afternoon and they could be the odd heavy one mixed in too. Still a
02:43 westy split in our temperatures in the east. Temperatures will be a little bit lower than
02:47 on Tuesday and more places struggling into high single figures at best. Further west
02:53 also a little bit lower than on Tuesday more widely getting into the low to mid teens so
02:58 a slightly cooler feel for many of us. Sticking with the high pressure towards the west generally
03:04 and low pressure towards the east as we go through Wednesday and into Thursday and so
03:08 it's still going to be across eastern parts where we have the greatest chance of some
03:12 blustery and showery weather as we go through Thursday itself. Colder air becoming more
03:17 widespread for a time and so that means Thursday morning does look particularly chilly. A fairly
03:21 widespread frost across rural spots of Scotland, England, Wales and also Northern Ireland especially
03:27 towards the west. Many places falling to low single figures if not a few degrees below
03:33 away from the towns and cities. In the east perhaps where we have a bit more cloud and
03:36 a bit more of a wind here it's not going to be quite as chilly as further west. As we
03:41 go through the day on Thursday then still some showers likely for eastern parts and
03:45 the odd heavy one is possible around parts of East Anglia and maybe Kent as we go through
03:50 the afternoon too. Elsewhere a fair deal of fine sunny weather towards the north and west.
03:55 Watch out for some showery rain pushing into the far north of Scotland later on but generally
04:00 dry for many of us though you can't rule out the odd shower. For many temperatures are
04:05 going to be similar to Wednesday perhaps picking up a little bit across some eastern parts
04:10 or a greater chance of getting into double figures here but still a rather cool feel
04:15 considering is going to be mid to late April by this point. Now as we go through into Friday
04:20 and there is going to be an area of low pressure developing towards the west south west of
04:25 the UK more on that in a second. Otherwise through Friday itself and it's a fine start
04:30 for many of us perhaps not quite as chilly a start as on Thursday morning but nonetheless
04:34 a touch of frost is still possible in a few areas and then through Friday itself then
04:39 showery rain across parts of Scotland pushes its way southwards and becomes more widespread
04:44 as we go through the day. So a greater chance of catching some showery bursts for many of
04:49 us as we go through Friday though towards the southeast here it is likely to remain
04:54 dry so a bit of a reversal in fortunes compared to earlier on in the week. Temperatures starting
04:59 to pick up a little bit but they are still going to be a bit below average for the time
05:03 of year so not as cool as earlier on in the week. Now I mentioned an area of low pressure
05:08 and this is likely to deepen somewhere towards the southwest of the UK as we go through later
05:12 Friday. Now there is a reasonable chance that this low will clear away towards the south
05:16 but some models want it to come back up towards the UK as we go into the weekend and now if
05:22 this happens then that would bring some heavy rain spreading up from the south and also
05:26 some strong winds so a pretty unsettled weekend to come. But like I said there is some uncertainty
05:32 because the models all want to do slightly different things. Nonetheless I think it is
05:35 going to be a slightly more unsettled weekend compared to what we will see through much
05:40 of this week. We will of course keep you up to date with the forecast as we get nearer
05:44 the time particularly if that unsettled spell does arrive this weekend. Make sure to subscribe
05:48 to our YouTube channel so you never miss an update. Bye bye.
