The Northern Territory government has struck a multi-year deal with resources company Tamboran that will see our power stations supplied with gas from the Beetaloo Basin. They say the first deliveries will begin could arrive in just two years' time but environmentalists and experts are urging the government to provide more details around how much taxpayers will be paying.

00:00Powering ahead, the NT government and a major resources giant go live with a deal.
00:07This is about securing our energy future in the Northern Territory.
00:12Ensuring that Northern Territory is prioritised, that first gas flows out of the Beetaloo Basin will serve all Territorians.
00:20Eva Lawler promising the nine-year agreement will keep the Territory's lights on and energy bills low as the company spruiks thousands of jobs across the NT.
00:29But environmental advocates say those estimates are exaggerated.
00:33We believe that there are other alternatives open to the Northern Territory which would also create thousands of jobs.
00:40They're backing other, greener solutions for the Territory.
00:43Including investing in renewables, investing in storage, stabilising the grid instead of throwing good money after bad, which is exactly what this is.
00:52If everything goes to plan, the first gas from the Beetaloo Basin will reach power stations like this one here in Waddell by 2026.
00:59But neither Tamboran Resources nor the NT government will say just how much that gas will cost NT taxpayers.
01:05The winners, the losers, the cross-subsidy, the subsidy ought to be up for public debate.
01:12So I think it's quite unacceptable that the Northern Territory government is not disclosing the terms of that.
01:19Tamboran is yet to reach final investment decision on its Beetaloo plans, but its CEO is upbeat.
01:26There's a chance for anything, but what I'll say is we're operating in a place of high confidence at the moment.
01:35I think without a juicy off-take contract from the Northern Territory government, it would be getting nowhere.
01:41The government hinging its hopes that the promised gas deal isn't just hot air.
