00:00I'm Antonio Centomani and I'm a director.
00:27You usually deal with everything else. How did the idea for this book come about and what is the core of it, without revealing too much?
00:35The idea came about as I secretly revealed to Dario Salvatore, who curated the prefaction of the novel, from a dream.
00:43It came from a dream that then obviously wanted to become a script and a cinematographic treatment,
00:50but then I transformed it into a novel, so a first work that I didn't think I could do.
00:56How did you come up with the idea and the theme of the book?
01:01I wanted to talk about love, because I'm a romantic, in the sense that I wouldn't like people to appreciate the word itself more.
01:09I wanted to tell a story, obviously making it up, of an impossible love,
01:14or rather, making it even more impossible, because it's set in a racist English settlement,
01:20where slavery was commonplace, and I punish my protagonist by making him madly in love with a slave.
01:27Could it also be a film?
01:30Well, this is the hope of all writers, I think.
01:34Actually, this novel was born with the idea of making it a cinematographic treatment,
01:40but then I realized, obviously doing this job,
01:43that in Italy it is not very easy to produce a film in costume set in the English settlement.
01:48Listen, treat the main characters with a few words, so the reader has an idea of what to expect.
01:56So I imagined a beautiful young English Nord, Sir Oliver Wellesley,
02:03who is actually ready to replace his father in the navigation company,
02:09who, like all the great companies of that time,
02:14so during the period of the company of the Indies,
02:17the transports between the Indies and England of precious fabrics, spices and even artisanal furniture.
02:28He does not believe in love at the beginning of the story,
02:30so he is actually very far away.
02:32His mother tries in every way to make him marry,
02:35but he stays far away from these ideas, even in the world of English nobility.
02:43And during one of these trips, unexpectedly,
02:47at the first landing in Africa, where they acquire new slaves on board,
02:54among these slaves there is a beautiful woman, Afua,
02:59a spectacular woman with black silk leather.
03:04I would like the word love, in the highest meaning of the word itself,
03:11to be more present among young people,
03:15less materialism and more concreteness in human relationships.
03:21So loving does not just mean enjoying life with a person you get along with.
03:29Loving has a very broad meaning.
03:32I hope that in these lines you can perceive exactly what my personal vision of love is.
03:48A great success, so much so that we return with the second season,
03:52where suddenly Santoni becomes a woman.
03:57Yes, Santoni becomes a woman, played by Carlotta Anatoli.
04:01Let's say that this was already foreseen,
04:03that Enzo Baroni would not be there in the second season.
04:08I like to imagine that the first woman Santoni
04:14arrives at the moment when there is the first female premier.
04:17So let's say that we can also read it from this point of view,
04:22to break the prejudices.
04:25We are metaphorizing.
04:27It can also be a nice message,
04:30because at a certain point Carlotta Anatoli finds herself in the condition
04:35of having to improvise in the clothes that were the husband's
04:42and therefore overcome the prejudices that were created around her
04:49in this role in the community.
04:51But let's say that she faces it very well and it is very funny,
04:57having to do with an antagonist, a competitor,
05:02in this case Francesco Paola Antoni,
05:04who is the second season,
05:08which makes it even more fun than the first.
05:10If you had to say the highlights of this season, what would you say?
05:18I always try to remember that we tell the periphery
05:27in a way that it is nice to tell these realities,
05:31since we are usually used to seeing them told
05:35under the aspect of crime,
05:38also in the series of great success.
05:41We tell them in the most positive section,
05:45which is that of the boutique under the house,
05:47the pizzeria, the door,
05:49and also of the saint,
05:51which becomes a spiritual guide,
05:55but also an element of comfort for the members of the community.
