Texas Rangers First Base Competition Rages On
Transcript
00:00Breea Mirandas and Chris Hallick of Sports Illustrated here talking about your Texas Rangers and baseball is finally on the horizon.
00:08Absolutely. Excited for baseball to get started again.
00:10Thank goodness. Alright Chris, I got a question for you because the biggest competition out of camp has been at first base. Is it still neck and neck right now?
00:18Yeah, it's still neck and neck. Ronald Guzman, the incumbent first baseman, he's young, but he's got some competition.
00:25The Rangers signed Greg Berg to the minor league contract with an invite to spring training and he has been healthy, which has been the main concern with him.
00:33But he's also been showing why he was such a high-yielding prospect as well, so it's definitely neck and neck still right now.
00:39And they're both left-handed hitters, so in your opinion, what's going to set one of them apart from another or who do you think is going to win this?
00:46Well, to set them apart from another, Ronald Guzman has to hit. We already know that Ronald Guzman can field.
00:52It's all about hitting with him, and if he can prove that he can be a major league hitter and take that next step, then it's Ronald Guzman's job.
00:58But if Greg Berg can come in and hit like he's been known to do, and if he can field very well, which he's also been showing this spring, then he can have it.
01:07Right now, honestly, because of the contract situations, I have to give it to Greg Berg right now.
01:12Brock Berg is going to go on the 60-day DL, which opens up a spot on the 40-man roster, so they can put him on with no consequence.
01:19And Ronald Guzman also has an option still available, so they can option him the AAA with no consequence other than what it would do to him, you know, morale-wise.
01:29So, honestly, I have to give it to Greg Berg right now, but things can change.
01:33Okay, and finally, when do you think this decision will be made?
01:35It's going to probably be the last decision unless somebody gets hurt between now and then, but it's probably going to be the last decision made just because it's really been neck and neck so far.
01:44Coming at you from rainy Dallas, make sure you stay tuned for more.
