00:07 South Karnataka, which includes regions like Mysore and Mandya, are traditionally known
00:11 to be the Vokaliga heartland of Karnataka and were once the stronghold of JDS, which
00:17 is a party headed by former Prime Minister H.T.B. Vygoda. However, the Congress party
00:21 made an impressive turnaround in South Karnataka during last year's state assembly elections.
00:27 For the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP and the JDS have allied with each other and both parties
00:32 will be looking to gain back some dominance in South Karnataka.
00:35 I was in Mysore and Mandya for the past two days and it looks like the issues that will
00:40 be shaping the politics of the region this time would be the concerns of the farmers,
00:45 which is currently the ongoing water scarcity, the Kaveri river water dispute and caste equations
00:52 instead of communal. However, in the months leading up to the Lok Sabha elections, there
00:58 was an incident in Mandya's Keragodu village, which stood up a controversy. At the centre
01:03 of the tensions was a flag pole and the decision by local authorities in the region to remove
01:09 a saffron flag, a Hanuman flag that was apparently hoisted on the flag pole and replace it with
01:16 the national flag to try colour. While locals in the region say that the practice of hoisting
01:21 a religious flag, in this case the Hanuman flag, was a practice that dated back to several
01:26 decades, authorities who removed the flag say that they only removed it and replaced
01:31 it with the tri-colour because it was January 26th, Republic Day and that the land was owned
01:36 by the government. The issue also turned into a political slugfest with the BJP-JDS combined
01:42 alleging that the Congress government was anti-Hindu and the Siddha Ramayana led Congress
01:48 government alleging that the BJP-JDS leaders were simply stirring up tensions ahead of
01:54 elections. However, despite the controversy, the farmers and other locals in the region
01:59 say that it was purely for political gains and that their concerns should be given priority
02:05 by the government first. That's all for today, stay tuned with Outlook for more updates.
02:09 updates.
