Today, Cory and Luke are discussing the FREE NaviLens app, which has been making waves in the industry by successfully partnering with a number of major brands like: Kellogg's, Olay, Pantene, Coca-Cola, Gillette, Oral-B and many more! But don't be fooled! This app is much more than simple product identification!
The real potential of NaviLens comes from the codes themselves which can be detected much more easily and from a far greater distance than both QR or Barcodes. This is especially convenient for those with a visual impairment because it means you do not need to line up your phone's camera perfectly in order to sense the code. Once detected, the app guides you towards that code, making it a reliable navigational aid as well.
But the usefulness does not end there! New NaviLens codes can be printed off from their website in any size and labeled for personal use in the home. There is no limit to the amount of text information you can assign to a code. Better yet, NaviLens preset printable codes can make it easier to accommodate the visually impaired by labeling important signage with preset codes such as: bathroom, stairs, recycling bin, water bottle filling station, etc. These preset codes are easy to print out and post up so as to help any smartphone user to interact more easily with their environment in places such as subway stations, bus stops and museums, public buildings or special event centers.

00:00 Hey, listen!
00:01 Have you heard about NaviLens?
00:03 Sure have and I'm ready to tell you all about it.
00:06 Me too.
00:07 Let's get our ocarinas out and get going.
00:09 Our what?
00:10 Ocarinas?
00:11 Welcome back to another TechConnect video.
00:21 We do assistive technology for people who are blind and visually impaired.
00:24 So if you're interested, please subscribe.
00:26 We would appreciate it.
00:27 Before we jump into today's video, I have to ask a question.
00:31 Who knows what we were referencing at the top of the video?
00:36 Me!
00:37 Me!
00:38 To be honest, I think you are the only one.
00:40 I told you, I guarantee no one else gets the reference.
00:45 I said that that's not true and at least one person will get it.
00:48 So if you are that one person, please put in the comments what the reference is.
00:53 And it cannot be you or Jonathan.
00:56 Put in the comments if you have any idea what we were referencing.
00:59 But in today's video, we are taking a look at NaviLens.
01:03 NaviLens?
01:04 Navi.
01:05 Navigator?
01:06 I'm going to say NaviLens.
01:07 Okay, NaviLens.
01:08 Let's do that.
01:09 This is a really cool technology that allows individuals to use their smartphone to get
01:15 more information about their surroundings.
01:18 Basically, what you're going to do is with your phone, scan an area and if there is a
01:23 NaviLens code that the phone picks up, it's going to alert you to that code and whatever
01:30 text they have added to that code.
01:33 So for example, if you are in a store maybe and you scan your code or scan your phone
01:39 around and you see a code and it tells you what aisle you're in and what's in that aisle
01:44 or something like that.
01:47 What's cool about NaviLens though is that it works farther away than QR codes.
01:53 It's got a much wider angle of view and the codes actually don't even have to be in focus.
01:59 And it's super fast.
02:00 You're going to see in our demonstration today how quickly the phone picks up on the code.
02:06 So we're going to give a couple examples of how NaviLens can be used to make your life
02:11 easier.
02:14 So the first thing you'll want to do if you are going to use NaviLens is download the
02:17 NaviLens app.
02:18 Corey, I know you already did because you are such an organized man.
02:22 Yes, but there was actually two of them.
02:24 So which one should I download?
02:26 Well, not NaviLens Go.
02:27 Nothing wrong with that app, but we are using the fully fledged NaviLens, which has a few
02:31 more features, including helping us to locate items.
02:34 And we do love doing that.
02:36 You might call it the OG version.
02:38 Is it though?
02:39 Either way, you want the NaviLens, not NaviLens Go.
02:43 Yes.
02:44 So if you want to follow along with the video, you will want the regular NaviLens.
02:46 Now, one of the things we can do with this, Corey, is pretty neat.
02:49 We can identify products in the store.
02:52 Oh, by using barcodes?
02:53 No.
02:54 Oh, how then?
02:55 Not barcodes, not product labels.
02:58 It's basically products that have the NaviLens codes on the box.
03:01 And I just happen to have one of those products here, Corey.
03:04 I want to see though, before we use NaviLens, can you recognize it by sound alone?
03:09 Okay.
03:10 Shake.
03:11 Okay, so it is cereal.
03:13 Shake again.
03:14 Okay.
03:15 18 ounces.
03:16 Okay.
03:17 One more time.
03:18 There's a snap.
03:19 Crackle.
03:20 One more.
03:21 And a pop.
03:22 Oh!
03:23 I'm pretty sure I know what that is.
03:24 Rice Krispies.
03:25 But I think I'll let NaviLens tell us.
03:26 Why not?
03:27 It's better to trust technology than our own brains.
03:28 That's what I always say.
03:29 So there is a code printed on the front of this product.
03:30 There is a code on the left side and there is a code on the back.
03:31 So it should be pretty easy, Corey.
03:32 No matter how the box is oriented in the store, it should be pretty easy to locate it.
03:33 Unless it's the right side.
03:34 Unless it's the right side, then you're in trouble.
03:35 Unless it's the left side.
03:36 Unless it's the right side.
03:37 Unless it's the left side.
03:38 Unless it's the right side.
03:39 Unless it's the left side.
04:00 And at this point, we're getting a sonar sound.
04:28 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:29 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:30 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:31 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:32 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:33 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:34 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:35 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:36 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:37 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:38 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:39 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:40 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:41 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:42 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:43 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:44 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:45 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:46 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:47 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:49 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:50 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:51 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:52 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:53 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:54 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:55 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:56 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:57 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:58 And we're getting a sonar sound.
04:59 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:00 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:01 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:02 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:03 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:04 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:05 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:06 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:07 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:08 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:09 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:10 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:11 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:12 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:13 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:14 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:15 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:16 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:17 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:18 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:19 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:20 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:21 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:22 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:23 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:24 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:25 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:26 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:27 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:28 And we're getting a sonar sound.
05:30 You're going to have the cereal box.
05:32 And I am going to first scan and find a NaviLens, a code.
05:38 And then we're going to locate it and we'll see what happens.
05:40 So first I'm going to open up the app.
05:42 NaviLens.
05:43 Here we go.
05:44 NaviLens.
05:46 I'm in scan mode too.
05:48 So I'm just going to start scanning here and we'll see what it gets.
05:55 >> Kellogg's Rice Krispies Breakfast Cereal.
05:57 Kid cereal.
05:58 Family breakfast.
06:00 Family size.
06:01 Original.
06:02 18 ounces box.
06:03 One box.
06:04 >> Okay, I'm going to stop it here.
06:07 It automatically started reading the same information that you had without voiceover.
06:12 Now I have two buttons I can work with here.
06:14 One is the more button.
06:15 And if I tap that, I'll see some of those nutrition facts you were talking about.
06:19 But I also can do locate.
06:21 So let's try that.
06:22 >> Locate.
06:23 >> And now that I'm locating, I found it.
06:26 I am getting haptic feedback.
06:28 The phone's vibrating.
06:29 And so it should now give me directions to the actual box.
06:35 So it says ahead.
06:38 Okay, it's beeping.
06:39 We're getting closer.
06:43 There it is.
06:44 I found it.
06:45 So what's cool about this locate feature is think about it.
06:49 If you're in a grocery store, you're going to be standing back a bit, right?
06:53 And it's going to see tons and tons of boxes.
06:55 So you pull up, you scan, it sees it.
06:58 But now you actually have to find the box on the shelf.
07:00 Tap that locate, and you can actually bring your phone, and it's going to bring you right to that box of cereal no matter which shelf it's on.
07:08 >> I will say as well, you can use that feature.
07:09 You don't have to have voiceover on.
07:11 And it will also give you a big arrow on the screen which points you in the direction of the box, which is kind of nice.
07:16 >> We should say that as far as we're aware, there are only five Kellogg's cereals that currently have NaviLens codes on.
07:21 And we're not sure exactly what other products in America do, but there seem to be a number of products in Europe which have the NaviLens codes on as well.
07:28 So hopefully we shall see a proliferation of these in the future.
07:32 >> Yeah, and if you don't have -- if you have a product that doesn't have a NaviLens code on it, why don't you stick around in the next section.
07:40 We're going to show you how to make your own.
07:44 >> All right, so we had a look at the cereal, but how about if you want to label something which doesn't have an existing code?
07:50 Well, luckily for you, this is also possible.
07:52 Not only is it possible, Corey, but it's also free, our favorite price.
07:56 The first thing that you need to do, though, is request some NaviLens codes.
08:00 And luckily you can do this right through the app.
08:02 You are able to request codes, and they will send you basically attachments in an e-mail.
08:07 And each attachment will have a different size code.
08:10 So the smaller codes, Corey, you might get, let's say, 50 or maybe even more on a single sheet.
08:16 >> I believe one of them had 600 and some codes.
08:19 >> What? That can't be on one sheet, though.
08:21 >> No, no, no, no. It's really cool.
08:23 The attachments tell you the size of the code, how many per sheet, and how many sheets it's going to print right in the file name, which I think is really clever.
08:31 >> That's excellent.
08:32 So, yeah, if you need the smaller codes, then you can get those.
08:35 For example, maybe you wanted to stick some on some pill bottles or something like that.
08:38 But we have some slightly larger codes.
08:40 So the ones that we printed out are, I don't know, a couple of inches across, a couple of inches down.
08:46 >> I believe it ended up being four on a sheet.
08:48 >> Okay.
08:49 >> If I remember correctly.
08:50 >> And the idea is here that we are going to be able to label these with whatever we want using a text edit field.
08:57 And then when we point our phone at them, then it will read the information on the label.
09:01 And it has to be noted, Corey, that this will be for your phone if you create it.
09:06 But that doesn't mean that I can read the same label with my phone.
09:09 >> That's correct.
09:10 Whatever phone you create it on is where it lives.
09:13 So for you, it would be a blank one.
09:16 But there is under the menu a friends and family section where you can go through the process and share some of your pre-made codes to friends and family so that it can then kind of go across devices.
09:28 >> Yeah, which is really cool.
09:29 So if you're a caregiver or something like that, you could create codes for whoever you are caring for.
09:33 Now, the cool thing about the NaviLens system is the fact that, number one, you can put, as far as I can tell, as much information as you want in per code.
09:43 So you could write a novel if you wanted and have that read aloud.
09:46 >> Seems a weird place to write a novel.
09:47 >> It does, but you can do it.
09:48 >> Sure, go for it.
09:49 I've written the first NaviLens novel.
09:52 >> And also it gives you directional information as well, which is really cool.
09:56 So, Corey, I believe that you have issues with working out.
09:59 And I believe that you want to try and rectify those.
10:01 >> Yeah, so down in my basement I have a treadmill and an elliptical.
10:07 I use it infrequently.
10:10 >> Sure.
10:11 >> And when I do use it, I always forget what buttons to press.
10:15 Now, one solution would be to just put some bump dots, right?
10:19 >> Sure.
10:20 >> Which I've done.
10:21 >> But even then the bump dots won't tell you which button is which.
10:22 >> Exactly.
10:23 Now I forget which bump dot is which.
10:24 So I know where the buttons are.
10:25 I just don't remember what is what.
10:26 So what my thought process was is I'll create a NaviLens code, stick it on the machine,
10:33 scan it with my phone because whenever I work out, I always jam out to tune.
10:38 >> Nice.
10:39 >> So I'll have my phone there and it would remind me.
10:40 So I am going to open up the app.
10:43 You are going to give me a blank code and we're going to go through the process of creating one.
10:47 >> All right.
10:48 >> So I'm going to open up the app.
10:49 Okay, so we got our little radar sound.
10:52 >> Okay, let me pass you the code.
10:53 There we go.
10:54 >> So we've got ourselves a blank one here.
10:56 I'll scan it.
10:58 Sees it.
11:00 And now there's a personal annotation button and I'm going to double tap that.
11:09 And now I'm in a text field where I can now put in any information I want.
11:14 And this information then will be spoken the next time I scan this code.
11:19 So we'll say, "You are standing on a treadmill, period.
11:25 The bottom right button is power and the top left button is make you run faster, chubby."
11:36 All right, so we've got it in and I will do save.
11:40 Go.
11:41 All right.
11:42 So we have now saved that.
11:44 And so now if I scan the same one in the future, so think about a year from now, I go down into my basement.
11:51 >> Seems a bit optimistic, but sure.
11:53 >> Hop on that old -- well, it is 2024, so we started a new year.
11:57 But I guess we're in April already.
11:59 All right, so I'm going to scan this code.
12:03 >> Nine inches away.
12:04 You are standing on the treadmill.
12:06 The bottom right button is power and the top left button is make you run faster, chubby.
12:10 >> Hey.
12:11 >> Hey.
12:12 >> It's not very nice.
12:13 >> No, no, no.
12:14 Just like in the Kellogg's example we gave, there was a locate button where I could have tapped on that.
12:23 Now, that's only going to be if you're scanning from a distance away.
12:27 So maybe if you were in a gym, went to the YMCA, and maybe you talked to them and said, "Hey, can I mark some of your machines so that you could actually locate and get closer?"
12:36 And to be honest, I think that's kind of a cool idea.
12:39 I used to go to the Y all the time, and there would be only one machine that was accessible for me, but it was sort of hard to find.
12:46 So being able to scan it and then locate right to it would have been great.
12:50 So being able to create your own personal codes, there's tons of use cases for them.
12:56 They give you thousands almost of different codes to do.
13:00 >> And how much does it cost again, Corey?
13:02 >> It is exactly free.
13:04 >> Awesome.
13:05 [MUSIC]
13:07 >> We showed you how you can set up your own personal codes, and you can request those through the menu of the app.
13:13 But you'll see when you go to request codes, there's also pre-made kits that NaviLens has.
13:20 And when you go through that process, you can choose what type of organization or what type of kit you want.
13:27 There's a number of them, association, event, library, things like that.
13:32 And then they're going to email you a huge list of all these different NaviLens codes that are already set up for specific areas.
13:41 Example, accessible bathroom, computer lab, things like that.
13:45 And what's cool about these is they're in the NaviLens database.
13:49 And so the last one we showed, when you create your own personal codes, we mentioned that those stick only on your phone.
13:56 These pre-made kits are going to be on everybody's phone.
14:00 So you're able, if you're an organization, you're able to download these pre-made kits and put them up.
14:05 So we've got one here at Vision Forward, and we're going to test and see if we can find it.
14:11 And then we're going to get directions.
14:14 Now, one thing I want to mention is that when we see the code, we're going to tap a locate button.
14:20 And that's actually going to flip us over to this 360 mode.
14:25 And if you're wearing headphones, you're going to be able to hear the sound cues in spatial audio around you.
14:32 Now, we're not using headphones in this example, but we can still follow the tone so that we can find our location.
14:39 So first, let's open up NaviLens and see if we can find a code.
14:43 NaviLens. NaviLens.
14:46 Okay, we're in scan mode. So I'm just going to kind of scan around me.
14:50 We're going to see if we can find a code.
14:53 [NaviLens]
14:56 Perfect. So it sees it there. We're now going to do locate.
15:00 [NaviLens]
15:02 Perfect.
15:04 And that beeping sound tells us it's in front of us, so now let's follow it.
15:09 [NaviLens]
15:18 Oh, I'm not going.
15:20 Oh, hello, Luke.
15:22 As you can see, I was brought right to the NaviLens code.
15:25 What I can do is add this to my favorites.
15:27 And anytime in the future, when I open up the NaviLens app, I can tap on my favorites.
15:31 I'll see accessible bathroom, tap on that.
15:34 And then when it sees the code, it'll automatically switch to 360 mode and give me those directions right to the bathroom.
15:42 And we'll just keep our fingers crossed that Luke won't be in there next time.
15:45 [NaviLens]
15:48 Okay, so that was NaviLens, free to download, free to use, free, free, free.
15:54 Very good stuff.
15:55 And as you can tell from the video, it's got a lot of good functionality.
16:00 If you want to label stuff, you can.
16:02 If you want to use it for labeling up your building, you can do that too.
16:07 If you want to use it for identifying stuff in the store, you can do that as well.
16:11 Wait, what's that? It's a weird noise coming from over here.
16:15 I just heard something on your right.
16:17 It almost sounded like it was a...
16:22 29 inches away, tilted to the right.
16:25 This is a small Indonesian pygmy elephant.
16:28 Oh, not again.
16:31 These things are always getting in when we're trying to film.
16:34 Jeez Louise.
16:35 Anyway, so...
16:36 I have no idea.
16:37 Be quiet elephants.
16:38 So, anyway, yes, NaviLens is a pretty interesting little thing.
16:42 And, Coey, how do you feel about NaviLens?
16:44 I have to ask a question here.
16:46 We're at the end of the video.
16:48 Those that are still here, thanks for sticking around.
16:51 How long were you waiting to get that pygmy elephant in?
16:56 Well, Coey, it feels like we started making this video about 15 weeks ago
17:00 because it's been so difficult to shoot.
17:02 So, yeah, about 15 weeks.
17:03 I'll be honest, I didn't realize we were still shooting.
17:06 I thought you actually heard.
17:09 So, anyways, I like NaviLens.
17:11 I think that there is a lot of really cool features about it.
17:15 First of all, its ability to see the codes from much farther away is really a strong suit.
17:23 It's got a wide angle.
17:25 You don't have to have the whole thing in perfectly like a barcode.
17:30 So all of that is really cool.
17:32 And also the locate feature.
17:34 I think that's something that adds value to this app.
17:38 And being free.
17:39 I mean, sometimes it's why not add as much as you can to your--
17:43 It seems to me like this--
17:45 Sorry to cut you off.
17:46 I apologize.
17:47 It seems to me like this app would pair perfectly with the Slinger.
17:53 For those who don't know about the Slinger, stay tuned because we will make a video on it one day.
17:58 I believe you should stay tuned for a very long time.
18:00 And we'll do that when we do the Aira Explorer app.
18:03 So hang tight.
18:06 Stick around on this channel.
18:09 If you haven't subscribed to the channel, please do so.
18:11 It really does help us out.
18:12 Please like the video, too.
18:14 A lot of times people say if you like it or you see value, hit that "Like" button.
18:18 We're going to ask you to hit "Like" no matter what.
18:20 Seems like you're begging a little bit here, Corey.
18:22 I will.
18:23 If the camera would see me down on my knees, I would go ahead and do that.
18:27 Corey is actually on his knees right now.
18:28 I am because I'm very tall.
18:29 But go ahead and like that video.
18:31 We appreciate it.
18:32 Throw it down in the comments if you're using NaviLens.
18:35 If you've used it in a building that already had it implemented.
18:39 That's another area that we didn't explore, but we will actually do so in a future video.
18:44 Talking a little bit more about the 360 exploration mode.
18:48 So throw it down in the comments if you have used NaviLens and what your experience was.
18:54 And we have many other types of exciting content that you can check out.
18:57 Why not check out our live shows in a podcast format from your favorite podcast provider.
19:03 What are they called, Corey?
19:04 Those are called "Slingers."
19:07 Those are apps that listen to podcasts.
19:09 I thought you had a special name for them.
19:10 I think it used to be called "Podcatchers."
19:12 I don't think they call it that anymore.
19:14 From your favorite podcatcher, why not listen to Vision Forward TechConnect?
19:17 Check it out. Search for it.
19:19 And that is, of course, a podcast version of our live show that we have every two weeks.
19:23 Corey, what's the name of the live show?
19:25 It's called TechConnect Live.
19:27 It sure is.
19:28 It took us a really long time to come up with that title, and we're very proud of it.
19:31 We are very proud.
19:33 The next one will be--well, no, I can't tell you when the next one will be,
19:36 because I don't know when this video is releasing,
19:38 but we have them every week that we don't have a produced video.
19:42 They are on Thursdays.
19:43 They are 11 a.m. Central Standard Time.
19:46 And we are hoping in the future to have some special guests on.
19:49 We do hope to speak to some people from Glidance.
19:52 If you're not sure about Glidance, then you can check out a video on our channel from CSUN
19:57 where we do have a little talk with somebody from Glidance.
20:00 But we are hoping to get them on for one of our live shows and find out more about that.
20:04 And we also hope to get Brian Hartgen on from Hartgen Consultancy, Consultation?
20:10 Hartgen Consultants.
20:12 And we want to find out more about Jayce.
20:15 Yeah, Jayce, Lisey, Jaydictate.
20:19 He does a lot of different JAWS scripts and programs.
20:23 Indeed. Very clever guy.
20:25 He has been in the business a long time.
20:27 Indeed. So we hope to talk to him.
20:28 And also, Corey, people can go visit our LMS.
20:31 Why not, Corey, to do that? They would visit.
20:33 Yeah, they would go to techconnect.vision-forward.org, create a free account,
20:38 check out all of our professional webinars, and get free on demand ACVREP credits.
20:45 Exactly. All day today we are handing you free stuff, free NaviLens, free ACVREP credits.
20:50 I'm not sure we're giving people free NaviLens, to be fair.
20:53 Well, that's very true. We're telling about it.
20:54 But we are giving you free ACVREP credits. Head over to techconnect.vision-forward.org, create an account.
21:01 We appreciate it. Stick around on the channel for our next video. That will be amazing.
21:07 Please like and subscribe and comment. Bye.
21:10 Stay tuned.
21:12 Join us, won't you?
21:18 Snap, crackle, and rice krispies.
21:20 Snap, I say it's crackle, what a happy sound.
21:23 He's got a hat, the happiest sound I've found.
21:26 He makes clap, crackle, rather stickle, bounce, sparkle, beat, crackle, snap, crackle, makes the world go round.
21:32 (beep)
