In the run-up to the European elections in June, Euronews takes a closer look at the Brothers of Italy party leader and the country's prime minister's speech in Pescara.
Transcript
00:00 Brothers of Italy`s conference in Pescara marked a key moment in the run-up to the EU
00:06 elections. And it won`t be just a test for Meloni`s leadership. Italy`s prime minister
00:10 said they aim to replicate in Europe what they`ve achieved in Italy and create a majority
00:15 that brings together center-right forces.
00:18 And while speculations on possible coalitions run wild, the ECR president`s speech provided
00:23 meaningful insight on her role as kingmaker in the EU.
00:26 "It refers to a spectrum of positions that in some way see in ECR and PPE the two main
00:33 pillars and then on the right in some of the ED delegations, on the left in some of the
00:40 EU delegations, let`s say, the number that is needed to vote in majority some procedures
00:47 rather than others."
00:52 Building common ground with other political forces is possible and has already happened
00:56 in the past, as Procaccini explains.
00:58 "The majorities and the minorities are formed on the basis of the single vote. The equilibrium
01:05 of the next European Parliament will be shifted to the right. But it will never be a majority
01:12 and a minority as it is normally understood, the dynamic of the national. The PPE, a good
01:21 part of the EU, is voting together with ECR, with PIS, with Orban, with the D. This is already
01:28 happening today. It does not happen on the basis of a pact, but on the single content.
01:36 And I believe that these votes will be much more frequent in the next legislature."
01:40 Melonia also spoke about the need to send the left into opposition.
01:44 "We will allow the European People`s Party to finally break the axis that has been with
01:49 the Socialists and the Greens to finally bring a conservative wind also in Europe."
01:56 But election results will make the difference.
01:58 "Of course there is a numerical issue. There is a lot of talk in this phase of fanta-politics,
02:05 of names that are made as a hypothetical President of the European Commission, as a hypothetical
02:10 President of the European Council, as hypothetical alliances. But we know that in Europe the
02:15 names of the European Commissioners are made post-vote, not before the vote."
02:19 Whatever will be decided after the elections, a lot is at stake for Meloni and conservatives
02:24 in Europe. Giorgio Arlandi for EUROnews in Rome.
