Elphicke: PM let country down by inaction with small boats

Former Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke has accused the prime minister of 'letting the country down' by not tackling small boat crossings, adding she had confidence Labour would.

Sir Keir Starmer said Ms Elphicke's defection speaks for 'very many Tory voters' who believe its party has changed. Report by Alibhaiz. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn

00:00 You're very welcome.
00:02 Nice to see you.
00:04 Sit down.
00:06 Really good day.
00:10 It's been a great day.
00:12 Really fantastic to see you cross over.
00:14 I'm so pleased.
00:16 And everything you've done on housing etc.
00:18 is so important to us.
00:20 Delivery, delivery, delivery is your thing isn't it?
00:22 It is.
00:24 Under Rishis Yonahak he is the man who said he would stop the boats.
00:26 And yet when we look at this year alone
00:28 it's record numbers of small boats arrivals.
00:30 So he's not stopping the boats.
00:32 And he's letting the country down.
00:34 Meanwhile under Labour they are clear
00:36 that it is important to have defence
00:38 and they want to make sure
00:40 that they have good national security.
00:42 So I think we should have confidence
00:44 that Labour are the party who will tackle
00:46 this issue of the small boats crossings.
00:48 What I've said that I will do
00:50 and what I've been asked to do
00:52 is to contribute in the area of housing
00:54 which has been a long standing area of experience for me.
00:56 And it's absolutely vital
00:58 that we build the homes the country needs
01:00 because under Rishis Yonahak we've seen
01:02 house building simply collapse in this last year.
01:04 And going forward it looks like
01:06 it will be another missed manifesto
01:08 promise from the Conservatives.
01:10 Not 300,000 homes but probably half of that number.
01:12 I'm delighted to welcome Natalie Elphick
01:14 to the Labour Party.
01:16 She's got a strong track record
01:18 on issues such as housing.
01:20 She's on the front line
01:22 when it comes to the crisis of small boats.
01:24 And the reason that she's given
01:26 for joining the Labour Party
01:28 is very, very important
01:30 because I think she speaks for very many Tory voters
01:32 in saying that
01:34 the Tory party has changed.
01:36 It's left the centre ground.
01:38 But equally the Labour Party
01:40 has changed and we are
01:42 very clearly the party of the national interest
01:44 of country first, party second.
01:46 And I look forward to working with her
01:48 on the mission
01:50 to deliver the real change
01:52 that this country desperately needs.
01:54 There are very many Tory voters
01:56 who genuinely feel
01:58 that the party that they may have voted for
02:00 many, many times in some cases
02:02 is no longer the Tory party that they see.
02:04 And I say to every Tory voter
02:06 who feels that
02:08 they want to be part of a national mission
02:10 to change our country for the better
02:12 that the project we've built here
02:14 in this changed Labour Party
02:16 is a project that I hope they would feel
02:18 that they could get to the bottom of.
02:20 they would feel that they could get behind.
