Two young Gambian women are breaking glass ceilings in industries dominated by men. Ida Faal, an auto mechanic, and Juka Darboe, a 3D-printing tech entrepreneur are not any ordinary women. They are pioneers in industries often considered a taboo workspace for women.

00:03 My mom wanted me to be a banker.
00:21 I tell my mom that definitely I have to follow my passion.
00:25 This is something that I love.
00:27 This is something really what I want.
00:29 Then that's how the love for spare parts developed.
00:33 As a woman, I know it would be very wise for me
00:36 to have a career in it.
00:38 Just not the passion, just not the love,
00:40 but to go back to school to educate myself and have
00:43 a hand-on experience on how to manufacture and work on cars.

00:52,
01:19 My partner and I came together to look for solutions.
01:22 Basically, it was for solutions for myself, for him,
01:26 and for people around us before we started as a company.
01:29 But after some time, we realized that 3D printing
01:32 is a good technology that has a lot of potential in Gambia.

02:22 Technology has been one of my greatest tools
02:25 because currently right now, I can widely and comfortably
02:30 say that I'm the only auto mechanic, both male and female,
02:35 that is using the ISS system in the Gambia.
02:38 That's the International Scan System, which is a plus.
02:41 And I'm also training young girls
02:43 on how to have the skills and the knowledge of using that.

03:06 I get things like, are you sure you can fix this?
03:09 Are you sure you can get my car starting and running?
03:12 So these are all the things that some of them
03:15 will tell me to just see whether I'm capable of doing this.
03:19 Because as a male-dominated, we do not expect
03:22 women to be successful on it.
03:25 But hey, I'm doing it.
03:26 And I am the best right now in the Gambia.
03:28 So they don't have a choice.
03:29 They work with my terms and under my condition.

03:40 People will be like, a beautiful lady like you,
03:43 why do you choose doing auto mechanic?
03:45 But people even laugh at me in my area and all those stuff.
03:48 But for me, when I say I want to do this, I must do it.
03:52 Once I know that it's a good thing for me and my family,
03:56 no one can even discourage me.

04:13 Whatever I wanted to do, I always had my mind set to it.
04:16 And I went through to do it.
04:18 So I guess this is what I did differently,
04:20 not listening most times, being curious,
04:23 and being able to push through and look for things
04:26 that I wanted and did it for my own happiness.

04:37 My message to young girls will always be the same.
04:40 Do not be afraid of your curiosity.
04:42 Always go the extra step and look for things
04:45 that you are curious about.
04:46 Look for answers.
04:47 Do some research.
04:49 Come up with ideas.
04:50 Do not limit yourself.
04:52 The thought is coming from, we check you.
04:56 We sound you.
04:58 We know what is actually wrong with you.
05:00 We solve it.
05:02 And it's a very small model.
05:04 It's just like this.

05:38 After having a very stressful week dealing
05:41 with different kind of customers,
05:43 I find peace by coming to the beach.
