00:02 Yeah!
00:03 I want to say a couple of words about Nicole.
00:08 When we chose Nicole, it was always, we've seen throughout our history,
00:14 that people who, presidential candidates, who chose unknown candidates as their vice president
00:23 have historically run into a lot of problems.
00:26 Because those people who are inexperienced in national politics,
00:32 often times when they're exposed to it, they collapse.
00:36 Any kind of issues they have are amplified.
00:41 And they end up looking bad.
00:45 And I have watched Nicole since the day of our announcement,
00:51 and what she went through has been extraordinary.
00:55 She didn't spend her lifetime thinking I'm going to be vice president of the United States.
01:01 I called her on the telephone and said, "Do you want to be vice president of the United States?"
01:06 And she said, "Let me think about it."
01:10 And then we had dinner about three nights later, and she said, "I can do it."
01:15 But you know, I'm worried about it, and other people are.
01:20 Because you don't know how people are going to hold up when you're walking into a buzz off.
01:25 Where you're vilified, you're marginalized, you're derided, you're defamed.
01:30 All of the things that I've been through, and I'm used to it.
01:33 I've been going through this for most of my adult life.
01:36 But to have that whole bang on you in a two-week period, or a three-week or four-week period,
01:43 and to be able to withstand it, and to come up and do a speech like that,
01:48 where every time I see her speak, I fall a little bit more in love with her.
02:04 Because you don't see how these presidential candidates, most of the presidential candidates we have today,
02:12 they sound like they're doing a satire of Veep.
02:16 And the stuff that they're talking about is inane, it's cliches, it's panaceas and shibboleths,
02:25 and simplifications and bumper sticker slogans.
02:29 And that's not what you hear from Nicole.
02:32 You hear a lecture of soils.
02:39 There's no political scientist in the world that would tell you you've got to do a lecture on soils.
02:46 They love it.
02:48 Nobody would tell her to do that.
02:50 Nobody would advise her.
02:52 And yet, she does it, and we all love her, because we see the authenticity, we see the integrity,
03:00 we see the compassion for other people, for the creatures with whom we share this planet.
03:09 And you don't hear that from our political leaders.
03:14 You don't hear that we're all part of a giant family, and that the microbes are part of it.
03:19 The soil is part of it.
03:21 The plants are part of it.
03:23 And that's what we need for an anasartic like this.
03:30 [Applause]
