00:00 [Commentator] ...in the middle of Van Poppel and it's Milan now!
00:02 Milan opens up!
00:04 But Moliere, can he hold him off?
00:05 Milan with a chance! Milan with a win!
00:07 Milan with a win!
00:08 Damalio Ciclomino doubles up!
00:10 Stage 12 and a really interesting day's racing ahead of the peloton.
00:21 A series of categorised and uncategorised climbs over 193km
00:26 from Martin Sicuro to a finish in Marche on the coast in Fano.
00:32 Tadej Pogacar with a race to defend
00:35 and the expectation that a breakaway would make it to the line.
00:37 And that meant on the first 55km of the race,
00:41 which were flat and along the coast and blown on by another day of strong tailwinds,
00:46 that the attacking was fast and furious
00:48 and it took a long time for a breakaway to establish itself.
00:51 In fact, it wasn't until the race had already ticked off the first 55km
00:56 and the climbs began that the definitive breakaway of the day,
01:00 and it would be huge, started to get clear.
01:04 Continually, groups of three or four riders animated the front of the race,
01:07 but on the first uncategorised climb of the day,
01:10 it was Julian Alaphilippe of Soudal Quick-Step taking riders with him,
01:13 including Jonathan Navaez, who went clear,
01:15 eventually prizing a huge breakaway group of 36 riders,
01:20 which ebbed and flowed, splintered and reformed,
01:23 but eventually created a massive breakaway at the front of the race.
01:26 Too big, in fact, for Julian Alaphilippe and Mirko Maestri.
01:29 Those two riders with 125km remaining clipped off the front
01:33 and started between them to build up a lead
01:36 and scooped up all the intermediate sprints and king of the mountains.
01:41 Categorised and uncategorised, the two riders were off the front of the race
01:46 and putting pressure on the various different chase groups
01:48 that formed and reformed behind them.
01:50 Jan Heert of Soudal Quick-Step was also up the road
01:53 and forcing Bahrain-Victorious to chase behind in the peloton
01:56 because he was a threat to the top ten on GC.
02:00 But at the front of the race, Julian Alaphilippe and Mirko Maestri
02:02 were in the hunt for the stage victory.
02:06 The climb to Monsano was the second categorised climb of the day
02:09 and they had over a minute's advantage to a chase group
02:13 that eventually settled down to nine good riders, including Jonathan Nevaes.
02:18 Then at the Intergiro, Inripe, Mirko Maestri led Julian Alaphilippe
02:24 just as he did over the final categorised climb of the day at La Croce.
02:30 Still working together as they headed to Montolfo
02:33 on the final bonus sprint of the day with 30km remaining
02:38 and an advantage on the flat approach to the last uncategorised climb of Monte Giove
02:42 which was being chipped away at a group of nine riders, including Nevaes,
02:46 trying to bring the two riders at the front of the race back
02:50 so that they could ride across and attack.
02:52 On the final uncategorised climb then, Julian Alaphilippe left Mirko Maestri
02:56 and behind, Michael Valgren and Jonathan Nevaes, as well as Quintin Herrmans
03:01 and Christian Schirroni attacked the rest of the chase group.
03:05 Julian Alaphilippe then, within the final six kilometres,
03:07 had over 30 seconds advantage over Herrmans and Nevaes.
03:12 And one of the most special victories of his career.
03:15 A double world champion, a monument winner
03:18 and has shown a pair of heels to the rest of this race.
03:22 He's not just outclassed them, outboxed them, he's outridden them.
03:27 Absolutely spectacular, wonderful, chapeau.
03:30 500 metres to go, he's going to love this bit.
03:32 Let the celebrations begin. Julian Alaphilippe is back.
03:37 He said as much, he said there's more to come
03:39 when he was beaten the other day into second place
03:41 and he has proven his point.
03:43 He completes the set of Grand Tour stage wins.
03:46 A winner at the Vuelta, a winner of multiple stages at the Tour de France,
03:50 a former Majoran, a double world champion
03:53 and now the winner of stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia.
03:57 A race of skill, brains, brawn, panache, style, you name it.
04:03 Alaphilippe has got it. The complete package on display today.
04:08 Alaphilippe in victory.
04:11 Woohoo!
04:13 31 years of age and dispatching the field in the Giro,
04:36 Mirko Maestri finishing top ten in ninth.
04:39 No change in the GC, Tadej Pogacar, smooth progress to the end for him.
04:43 The top ten as you were.
04:46 And no change either in the Mallea Ciclamino,
04:48 save for the fact that Julian Alaphilippe has bumped himself up to fifth place.
04:54 No change either in the King of the Mountains,
04:55 just 12 points on offer today and Simon Geska wasn't up the road.
05:01 And it's as you were in the white jersey standings as well.
05:03 Antonio Tiberi continuing to lead the way.
