00:00 The Ninoy Aquino International Airport needs to be re-opened to attract more tourists,
00:05 according to the British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.
00:08 EJ Gomez has the first news.
00:11 World famous beaches, crystal clear water, beautiful scenery, delicious food, and Filipino hospitality.
00:22 Those are just some of the reasons why it's more fun in the Philippines.
00:27 But for the country's tourism to grow, our airport infrastructure needs to be improved,
00:34 according to the British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.
00:37 Your first gateway to the Philippines is through the airports,
00:41 and that counts in both ways, arrival and departure.
00:45 The Transportation Department admitted.
00:49 Well, I agree, definitely, we really need to improve the airport infrastructure.
00:56 The current state of the airport is really not acceptable.
01:02 According to the DOTR, the current average passenger capacity of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport
01:09 is 50 million, compared to the 32 million that should be.
01:14 The facilities of the airport are also a problem,
01:17 including the seats that were demolished and then re-opened,
01:22 air conditioning and power supply, and traffic around the airport that is a nuisance to tourists.
01:29 That's the reason why we are embarking on a PPPP program with the private sector,
01:37 so that we can implement reforms in the operations of the airport.
01:45 There are also projects being done, like the Metro Manila Subway and North-South Commuter Railway.
01:52 The construction of the major railway projects will really contribute to ease traffic in Metro Manila.
02:00 According to the Tourism Department,
02:02 the number of tourist arrivals in the past year reached 5.45 million,
02:07 bringing in more than P480 billion in revenue.
02:10 That's twice the number of 2.65 million international visitors
02:15 and P214 billion in tourism revenue in 2022.
02:18 Now, in 2024, the government targets 7.7 million international tourists.
02:25 The Tourism Department hopes that with the help of the National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028,
02:31 the government will promote the culture, heritage and identity of the Philippines
02:35 and become the tourism powerhouse of Asia.
02:38 They say they will make the quality of tourism infrastructure projects
02:43 including the construction of tourist rest areas in various parts of the country.
