Jelly Roll caught up with Billboard's Melinda Newman on the Winners Walk at the ACM Awards 2024.
Transcript
00:00 I'm here with Jelly Roll. Yes. Former Billboard cover subject. Yes, baby. See what happens when
00:05 you're on the cover of Billboard? I like being called a subject. I like that. Like a case study
00:09 kind of. You know what I mean? I dig that. All right, you're a case study in that tonight you
00:14 won your first ACM award. First time nominated, first award, and it couldn't have happened for
00:19 a more meaningful song. So let's talk about this. So it was for a musical event for Save Me with
00:24 Lainey Wilson. Talk about what you'd obviously recorded the song yourself. Why did you feel like
00:31 you needed to add someone to it and why Lainey? I just, I love Lainey and I wanted to hear it from
00:37 a woman's point of view. You know what I mean? And I had the first thing that my stylist,
00:41 Crystal Rosa, said when she heard it. She said, I listened to that song a thousand times and loved
00:45 it. But I cried the first time I heard Lainey singing because it felt like it was one of us
00:49 singing it. And I was like, wow, it just just covered me with chills. And I knew that it was
00:54 going to be a special song. So and what I mean, I could have never. I mean, I had a feeling Lainey
00:59 was going to be the biggest artist on earth. But whoa, man, what a great year for me to have a song
01:03 with her. You know what I'm saying? Right. So as her friend, does she come to you and say, man,
01:11 how are you dealing with this? Like, can you give me some advice? Like, what is your advice for her?
01:16 Because you were a little bit further ahead of her. And then you guys just started both zooming.
01:21 It's been so awesome. We've been so so paralleled and everything we talk about openly and honestly,
01:26 her and Cody Johnson and a couple of the ones I'll call and we'll lay it all on the table with.
01:30 And that's really important because when all this is down, it's 10 o'clock tomorrow morning and
01:36 there's a little bit of a lonely hour. We'll call each other and go, what's up, man? How you really
01:39 feel? And that's the coolest part of our friendship. So it feels like everyone wants to do it with you.
01:45 So what is the strangest call that you've gotten lately or the call that you couldn't believe?
01:50 You look down and it's Dwayne Johnson calls you all the time. That's not new.
01:55 So when it's not the rock, that's the one that surprised you the most.
01:59 I think whenever I got the call to do the music cares of John Bon Jovi, and then I met Sir Paul
02:05 McCartney at the same time. So there's a picture that exists on the earth of me meeting Sir Paul
02:10 McCarthy and John Bon Jovi at the same time. And it's that was the one that was like, get out of
02:15 here, man. Right. So do you have to look at it to make sure it was real? I do. I told my I had to
02:20 send it to people and say, I promise this ain't Photoshop. The problem is most of the people
02:24 that are old enough to appreciate it didn't know what Photoshop was. So I've asked people who they
02:29 most want to perform with. And Paul McCartney has come up twice. Yes. So who do you most want to
02:35 perform with? I'll go with the counter of that and say, John Bon Jovi, actually, that'd be really
02:40 crazy, especially now that his voice is back all the way fire. And I watched the documentary. I
02:45 thought it was amazing. And yeah, dude, I'd love to do something with someone or James Taylor.
02:49 I'd cry. Have you Bob Seger, either one of the greats. I mean, me and John are starting to become
02:55 friends. It's really cool. It's really cool. That's gonna happen. I hope so. I know 100%
03:00 that is going to happen. Yes. That's too good. Not to be a good
