00:00 A US Treasury Department official has been reported as saying service providers based
00:06 in Malaysia are enabling Iran to move its oil.
00:11 Are they?
00:12 Well, that has been an allegation, but they have not given any evidence to suggest that.
00:19 So you've not been given any evidence by the US?
00:21 No.
00:22 They were suspecting that some companies were involved in the ship-to-ship transshipment
00:27 in international waters.
00:28 I said, "Do you give evidence of that?"
00:30 If we do, then we will have to put that on check because as far as we're concerned, we
00:36 accept the decision of the United Nations.
00:42 But of course, we do not agree with the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States.
00:48 Our position is sanctions can be only decided by the United Nations.
00:53 And you're sure that no Malaysian entities are engaging in any activity that's banned
00:59 by UN sanctions?
01:00 If they do use evidence, we have of course to stop that because we want to be part of
01:05 the international community that accept the ground rules.
01:09 Is the US requesting anything from Malaysia at this point vis-a-vis this question of allegations
01:15 of Malaysian entities?
01:18 No contrary to what is highlighted in the media, but I think in the sessions that we
01:22 have with the United States Treasury, it seems to be more subdued, more orderly, and we have
01:28 given clear undertaking that we do not transgress international rules.
01:35 And if there's evidence, we certainly cooperate.
01:38 There's no question about it.
01:39 Will you work with any US requests vis-a-vis US unilateral sanctions?
01:46 Unilateral sanctions will be difficult because I think countries do not generally accept
01:51 that.
01:52 The US has imposed, I think, sanctions on four Malaysian companies in December.
01:57 How will Kuala Lumpur respond to that?
01:59 Well, we said you can impose using your power and authority, but you have to give evidence.
02:06 And I can assure you that we will give all the support necessary.
02:11 But is there any countermeasure coming from Kuala Lumpur?
02:14 No, we will have to continue to engage with the Americans.
02:18 We say, look, we have to defend the right of our companies if they do not transgress
02:23 international law or decisions by the United Nations.
02:28 But you can't try and be deemed to be bullying smaller states, particularly a loyal friend
02:38 for a long time.
