00:00 Right, midfielders. 3, 2, 1.
00:03 Hello Salop fans, welcome back to ShropshireStart.com. I'm down here at the Crowd Meadow alongside Salop correspondent Oli Westbury for our end of season Shrewsbury Town reviews.
00:12 And in this video we're going to talk about the midfielders. Now in the last video we talked about the sort of chopping and changing at the back, but there has been an awful lot of players sort of used across the middle of the pitch as well.
00:24 And I think we're going to reflect on those. I'm just going to run you through a little bit of a list of them really, because we looked at the list beforehand, didn't we, and the list, the squad list this season, you know, collectively with players who've come in mid-season and in January and last summer has been quite big.
00:36 So the midfielders at Salop have used this this year and we're going to talk about the likes of Noam Kenney, Carl Winchester, who was an almost ever-present, Taylor Perry, who played an awful lot of the campaign, Tom Bayliss, who's now departed, Jordan Shipley, Elliot Bennett, who's obviously played at right wing back as well, but central midfield.
00:53 Also, Jack Hinch, who came in from Brighton in January, Roland Aideau, who also came in and then of course, Jack Price, who signed later on in the campaign.
01:04 Let's talk about the ones who've been sort of more consistent, Oli, the likes of Noam Kenney, played an awful lot at the start of the season, Carl Winchester, I know you spoke to recently and had a very fascinating chat, and Jordan Shipley.
01:16 Let's focus on those three because they've been probably played a lot more, well and Taylor Perry have probably played more football than anyone in the middle of that.
01:23 Yeah, probably Winchester, Perry and Shipley are probably the ones that have played the most football.
01:29 In terms of Winchester and Shipley, they have been and probably will continue to be.
01:34 I think Shrewsbury is a pretty important player. Obviously, Shipley played on the left, scored some outstanding goals, didn't he? On that left side, Beckham's goals, routine, corners, I can't believe he did it twice.
01:47 Is that what you call it?
01:49 Yeah, that's what it was called. He scored some outstanding goals. He probably ended up with between five and ten goals and between five and ten assists, which he certainly missed half the season.
02:02 He missed from August through to November with a knee injury that he picked up a fleet with away, so he was pretty outstanding.
02:08 Karl Winchester is just an absolute gem of a guy. I absolutely love Karl. I spoke to him last week and readers of the Shopstar will have seen some of the stories coming out about Karl Winchester.
02:23 They'll continue to be drip-fed into the paper over the next couple of weeks. On the field, his performance, he never gave anything less than 100%.
02:32 You'd often see him walking off the pitch looking completely and utterly shattered and sometimes quite distraught, depending on what happened in the game.
02:42 But a good footballer too, good footballing pedigree. I think he'd like to try and score a few more goals next season, but Winchester is certainly another one of those.
02:50 Taylor Perry, I thought he came in and obviously he was on trial at the start of the season, wasn't he? And then obviously Shrewsby signed him. I thought Perry did okay.
03:00 It was a solid first season. He probably would have liked a few more goals and assists, perhaps. I think he only scored away from home a couple of times where he got into positions that he could have scored and didn't quite.
03:11 But I think that Taylor Perry can consider himself fairly content with his first season in Shropshire. I think he did a relatively good job.
03:21 It kind of felt like he was being moved around a little bit. At one stage he'd be in the 10, then he'd be playing a bit deeper, at times he'd be playing on the right.
03:29 So, not necessarily always straightforward for Taylor Perry, but I thought he had a pretty decent season. He'd be happy with the way it went.
03:37 In terms of Noahn Kenner and sort of Lone, let's talk about Lone players up coming. You've got Nohann Kenner, Jack Hinchey, two players that came in on Lone.
03:46 Nohann Kenner played a lot more football, but sort of tailed off towards the end. Obviously, Jack Hinchey didn't probably make the impact that Shrewsbury would have hoped for in the January win.
03:57 Yeah, I don't think it's unfair to say that they probably didn't have the impact that they would have liked to have had as midfielders.
04:05 Obviously, Nohann Kenner was brilliant at breaking the play-off and his defensive midfield qualities were pretty outstanding at tackling and covering the ground and his athletic ability.
04:15 But unfortunately, he probably let himself down with his use of the ball at times. Jack Hinchey just never really quite got going.
04:23 First Lone move for him, he'll be better for it. But probably not quite ideal really for Hinchey.
04:31 He didn't properly play as much as he would have liked to when he arrived. There were some positive initial signs, but he was perhaps too guilty of probably conceding possession, which is perhaps surprising for someone coming from Brighton.
04:43 But yeah, probably not ideal really for those two.
04:48 And of the other ones, obviously Tom Bayliss has now departed. Someone who, earlier in his start up career, had some really special moments, but it just didn't really go through in the season. You can probably understand why he's not on the club.
05:00 Yeah, he was excellent in Steve Cottrell's season, his first season. But he just couldn't find it this year. He just couldn't find what it was that was missing. But that quality, that composure on the ball, it was just sadly lacking.
05:18 I understand why the club have let him go.
05:20 Roland Ido, someone who's come in for the future or don't really know enough yet?
05:25 You don't know enough. He's not really had a chance, in fairness. He came in in January. Obviously, another player that's been brought in from the League of Ireland came in in January. He's done... he hasn't done enough.
05:38 It's hard to form an opinion on him because he's just not played enough football yet. He's come on and had brief cameos and perhaps looked a little bit lightweight. But in the main, it's hard to make too much of an informative decision on someone if you've not seen them play.
05:55 Two more to mention. We'll start with Elliot Bennett. Obviously, a very emotional scene on the final day of the season here as he departed the football club. Just a solid player.
06:06 Solid all-round good egg.
06:08 Good egg. He's done well throughout his career and done really well here at Salah.
06:12 He's had three years here and I would say that they've probably been a success. He said to me a couple of weeks ago that he was absolutely delighted when the club asked him to come back.
06:22 Probably wouldn't have played, didn't play as much football as he would have liked this season. But I thought he made two really, really important contributions.
06:31 He's chomped away big games when there was a lot on it and I thought he was excellent in midfield in both of those games. His experience and his maturity and the way that I imagine he probably is in the dressing room will be something that we'll be savouring this season.
06:45 Finally, someone who we've probably had more podcast questions about than anyone this season. All them questions obviously didn't come to fruition. Jack Price when he signed his deal. Just one simple question.
06:58 Will we see him in the shootout?
07:00 I don't know.
07:01 Scott's on his trousier on the fence.
07:04 What, sound like a journalist on the fence, isn't it? I don't know. Will we see him in a Shrewsbury shirt? It's hard to say, isn't it?
07:12 Has he done enough? I don't think his playing ability has ever been in doubt. But has he proven, however long he was at Shrewsbury, that he's capable of getting through a league one season? I would say not.
07:29 I would say the club have done the right thing to offer him the chance to train. I don't think they can take that kind of gamble with the budget in the way that it is and the finances and the position that they're in to be taking a punt on whether somebody may or may not be fit enough.
07:44 Let's be honest, he played for five minutes and then missed three weeks because of fatigue or whatever it was. I'm sure he's a very, very… We know that Jack Price will be, if he signs, we'll probably be sure he's his best player.
07:59 But he's still recovering from an injury that he was out for a really long time for. So it's whether he can get himself back to the level that he needs to find to play consistently football.
08:09 I don't know.
