00:00 Senator Francis Escudero is the new Senate President.
00:03 Yesterday, Senator Juan Miguel Subiri resigned as Senate President.
00:07 His colleagues said that he left the office.
00:11 Subiri did not directly point out who could be the one who is not content with his job.
00:17 Ma'am Gonzalez has first news.
00:19 Today, I offer my resignation as Senate President of the Republic of the Philippines.
00:31 Almost two years since the former Senate President of the Philippines, Senator Juan Miguel Subiri, resigned.
00:39 I have never dictated my position on any of you. You know that.
00:42 I've always supported your independence, which is probably why I face my demise today.
00:49 I failed to follow instructions from the powers that be.
00:52 Those in the Senate and the committees also held positions in the Senate.
00:58 I pledge my full support to those who will carry our mission forward.
01:03 I hereby tender my resignation as Senate President pro tempore
01:09 to allow the new leadership to organize its committees and leadership.
01:16 I tender my resignation because the greater cause outweighs my personal interest.
01:22 I'm also resigning as chairperson of the Committee on Accounts and Tourism and Ethics.
01:29 When this institution was under threat, Senator, Senate President Subiri fought our institution.
01:34 He fought our country.
01:37 Those who want to take away the power.
01:40 I'd like to also tender my resignation as the chairperson of the Committee on Finance,
01:45 the chairperson of the Committee on Youth,
01:47 and the chairperson of the Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments
01:50 in order to give the new leadership a free hand to choose who they wish to fill up these positions.
01:58 I would like to resign, of course, to give the new leadership a free hand.
02:03 I have put myself on the line to shield the Senate from all attacks,
02:08 particularly from efforts to diminish the powers of this institution
02:12 as the country's last bastion of democracy.
02:16 In January, we fought against the dreaded People's Initiative
02:21 which would have destroyed this very institution I'm standing here right now.
02:27 God knows what I had to do to defend the Senate.
02:30 Subiri will be an independent senator and he promised to help the new Senate leader
02:36 even though he admitted that he was in a bad mood.
02:38 I found out last Wednesday that they were talking to each other.
02:47 And, uh, uh, there. It's already started.
02:51 So, we were watching over the weekend.
02:54 And I was a little upset because there were still people texting me,
02:59 "We're with you. We're full support. We are 100% with you."
03:07 And then, in one day, nothing happened.
03:11 It's really hard to be a politician.
03:13 Subiri believes that he started talking about the charter change
03:17 especially when he refused because of the PIDEA leaks hearings.
03:20 A lot of people told me, "You know, stop the hearings, this and that."
03:27 It's hard to talk.
03:29 All I can say is, I must have ruffled other people's feathers
03:33 from my independent stance of the Senate.
03:35 People's initiative. When we didn't agree on the people's initiative,
03:40 that's when it started.
03:42 We didn't agree on their timelines, on the charter change.
03:47 That's when I felt that there were some bad feelings.
03:52 It's hard because I just want to maintain the independence of our institution, the Senate.
04:01 So, I saw it coming.
04:04 Subiri didn't answer directly when asked during a 24-hour interview
04:09 who are the powerful people that he didn't follow so he had to resign.
04:14 Who are these powers that be that you're referring to in your statement?
04:17 Very influential people, maybe, who talked to me.
04:20 Especially, this news, a lot of people told me that because of Bato's hearings,
04:26 there were people who talked to me about why I continued the hearings.
04:31 When you say powers that be, are you referring to the President? To the First Lady?
04:36 I don't want to make guesses, but people that are influential enough to secure the votes.
04:43 You know, on Saturday, a lot of people texted me, "There's support, full support."
04:49 After 24 hours, when I woke up, they didn't answer me.
04:53 So, you know, I'm a bit heartbroken about what happened.
04:58 Does the President still enjoy your support at this point?
05:01 That's for another discussion.
05:03 Subiri said he felt supported by the groups that are in the middle.
05:07 He said he supported the UNITE team, but when there was a split, he was put in the middle.
05:13 He mentioned before that different groups were against him
05:16 when he heard about the PIDEA leaks in the Senate on May 13.
05:20 Different groups are against me. I'm neither here nor there.
05:23 The Duterte group is mad at me, the Marcos group is mad at me.
05:27 The Duterte group is mad at me because we issued a warrant of arrest against Pastor Kipoloy.
05:33 The Marcos group is also mad at me, the loyalists, because I allowed you to file a hearing.
05:41 Following Subiri's election, Senator Cheese Escudero was nominated as the new Senate President.
05:46 And because there was no other nominee, Escudero was the winner by acclamation.
05:50 Senator Jingoy Estrada was the new Senate President pro tempore,
05:54 and Senator Francis Tolentino was the new Majority Leader.
05:58 My hats off to you, Senate President Subiri. I salute you, and I hope I will make you proud.
06:05 There is no My Team, no Your Team for me.
06:09 No SPMIGS, no Cheese for me.
06:13 I think that each one of us is a member of the same Senate.
06:18 Subiri said, "I hope the new leader won't put pressure on the Senate to remain independent."
06:25 When it comes to the issue of Chacha...
06:27 Goodbye Chacha.
06:29 Chani Alnara has already signed.
06:34 It's all canceled.
06:37 You know that Senator Escudero is anti-Chacha.
06:41 He's openly anti-Chacha.
06:43 I hope the people that supported him know that.
06:46 As far as we're concerned, Chacha this week is dead.
06:49 We will discuss it on the part of the majority, but you know my position.
06:52 And I have no plans of changing my position.
06:55 So does that mean we're on the same line as Chacha?
07:00 Umm... Do we have that?
07:02 This is the first news.
