00:00 I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light.
00:07 Welcome to Mojo Plays and all your base are belong to us.
00:09 Today we're looking at the 10 cringiest lines in video games.
00:13 Cringe is hard to define but it's easy to spot.
00:15 If you hear a line of dialogue and your toes curl, it's probably cringe.
00:19 If you hear a line of dialogue and your brow furrows, it's probably cringe.
00:22 If you hear a line of dialogue and vomit in your mouth through tears, it's probably cringe.
00:27 Let's go.
00:28 To continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell

00:36 Kingdom Hearts
00:40 More often than not, the cringe meter doesn't come from the actual writing of a piece of
00:43 dialogue but from the delivery and in this particular moment of Square Enix's 2001 masterpiece
00:48 Kingdom Hearts, it's the delivery that kills it for us.
00:52 At the climax of Hollow Bastion, in a showdown with Riku, it seems like Riku's about to deliver
00:56 the killing blow on Sora when at the last second he stops the strike with a block of
01:01 his own.
01:02 Then, he puffs up his chest, gets his big boy voice out and delivers this absolute gem.
01:13 The edgy delivery from the generally soft-spoken Sora feels a little out of place and causes
01:18 many players to burst out with laughter.
01:21 It's like getting yelled at by a teddy bear.
01:24 Disaster Report
01:35 Disaster Report, released in 2002 under the alternate title SOS The Final Escape, immerses
01:41 the player in the role of a reporter tasked with uncovering the gradual demise of an artificial
01:45 island.
01:46 Amidst the chaos of collapsing structures and frequent earthquakes, your primary objective
01:50 is to escape the island.
01:53 Despite the circumstances, the game underscores a profound commitment to journalism, which
01:57 is hilarious already as you navigate the unfolding catastrophe while simultaneously striving
02:03 to document it.
02:05 In an era replete with technological advancements like laptops and wifi, one might wonder why
02:10 the protagonist doesn't simply rely on modern tools to fulfil their journalistic duties
02:14 amidst the island's impending collapse.
02:17 This line, in all its tautological glory, hits the ears very poorly, with the motivation
02:22 being cringe and the writing being dog shit.
02:30 Heavy Rain
02:35 The one thing you don't want to do in a deeply emotional moment of a film, or a game, or
02:39 a play is to make your audience laugh.
02:42 When you're intending on complete and total seriousness, missing the mark and causing
02:45 people to burst out with the giggles can heavily impact the intended tone, and unfortunately,
02:50 the delivery of the line "Jason" in this section is so goddamn goofy it undermines
02:56 the unbelievably serious scene of a child going missing and dying.
03:08 Allowing the player full control of this line, with only a handful of variations in delivery,
03:13 is a moment of cringe we won't soon forget.
03:19 Final Fantasy X
03:30 JRPGs can often have their moments of agonising cringe.
03:34 To western audiences, some interactions are a little bit too cute to slide under the radar.
03:39 This interaction between Tidus and Yuna in Final Fantasy X is probably trying quite hard
03:45 to be cute, but ends up coming across excessively cringey due to the scene itself and the delivery.
03:54 When trying to cheer up Tidus, Yuna adopts the childish method of making him smile to
03:59 forget his worries.
04:00 When one adult is telling another "come on, let's see that smile, it's personally a little
04:04 too much for me" but it gets even worse when she forces Tidus to laugh out loud and he
04:10 delivers the most stagnant "ha ha's" you've ever heard.
04:30 Couple this with them fake laughing together and we're officially done.
04:38 Resident Evil
04:44 Originally launched in 1996, the Resident Evil series played a pivotal role in popularising
04:49 mature horror themed video games, thrusting the survival horror genre into the mainstream.
04:55 What it didn't play a pivotal role in was popularising making characters talk like they
04:58 were born on this planet.
05:00 Amidst a plethora of memorable lines, one stands out, the enduringly amusing advice
05:06 from Barry Burton to Jill Valentine.
05:14 Such lines linger in our memories even after all these years, encapsulating the charm of
05:19 the era.
05:20 Jill Sandwich comes in a close second.
05:23 NBA 2K24
05:25 This is less about one line and more about an entire collection of lines.
05:29 Being a commentator can't be easy, you have no lines, you're just commenting on what is
05:33 happening before you, you have to be engaging and informed and sometimes funny.
05:38 Commentator humour can miss the mark sometimes, it's all improv but at least it's improvised,
05:43 when the dialogue is written, that's when things get a little cringey.
05:47 An attempted humour from the commentators in this game is met with an audible groan
05:50 from players as the humour feels less on the fly and more dad jokey.
05:55 The most memorable being, well they didn't have cell phones down there to text each other
05:59 so they may as well talk to each other.
06:11 Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes
06:14 Kojima is infamous for lines of dialogue filled to the brim with melodrama and it was hard
06:19 to just pick one from Metal Gear Solid but for today we've decided to go with the line
06:24 from MGSV that was so infamous it became a meme.
06:28 After Big Boss completes his mission in Ground Zeroes, it becomes evident that the inspection
06:32 was merely a distraction for a surprise assault on Mother Base, catching the MSF soldiers
06:37 unaware and leading to the base's submersion beneath the ocean's surface.
06:41 Though narrowly escaping with his life, Miller reunites with Big Boss to convey the unfolding
06:45 events, prompting him to utter this awful line.
06:54 It's something about the seriousness of the moment being coupled with this comical description
06:59 that leaves us laughing till the cutscene is over.
07:02 Destiny.
07:09 Cringe is hard to define and this one could be argued as less cringe and just more plain
07:13 lazy but it's undeniably famous so we gotta talk about it.
07:18 Now although many people believe Peter Dinklage was replaced for a tonal change, it's not
07:22 technically the case.
07:23 He was instead due to scheduling conflicts which is the reminder that fans of his character
07:28 in this game like to remind people of, but when you take into account the online hate
07:32 he received well before he was recast, it's hardly the smoking gun they think it is.
07:38 With as much passion as a factory worker on their 10,000th shift, Peter Dinklage delivered
07:42 this line like he'd never experienced even a touch of whimsy in his life.
07:52 Death Stranding.
07:54 Was this scene being played for laughs?
07:56 Was it meant to be serious?
07:58 Why the hell would Sam refer to himself and Amelie as Princess Peach and Mario when they're
08:02 brother and sister?
08:03 That's creepy.
08:05 So many questions remain after experiencing this and we don't even have time to get into
08:09 what is happening plot wise at this point so let's just sum it up like this.
08:13 Amelie, ever the comedian, makes a god awful pun jumping off her brothers previous analogy,
08:19 delivers it in full earnesty and then the two run together along the beach smiling and
08:24 laughing.
08:34 Tonally this didn't match anything else going on and also it's just such poo writing.
08:40 I've been a Kojima fan since I was 5 years old and even I think someone needs to reign
08:45 this guy in.
08:47 Devil May Cry.
08:49 Honestly this is gonna be our number one pick.
08:51 It's atrocious.
08:53 Sometimes cringe comes from the actor making the wrong choice, sometimes cringe comes from
08:57 the writers making the wrong choice and sometimes cringe comes when both these elements clash
09:02 in a perfectly harmonious mess of dog shit.
09:06 At the climax of Devil May Cry, Dante in agony and pain, believing his love to be dead, lets
09:11 out the infamous line complete with voice break and echo.
09:25 Even though the voice acting choice left much to be desired, the actual line is so lame,
09:31 Daniel Day Lewis couldn't have delivered it well.
