00:24 Source Code is about an army pilot, Stevens, who is repeatedly sent to inhabit the body of a teacher in order to prevent a deadly train attack.
00:33 Stevens' real body is on life support and he wants to be allowed to pass on, but to do that, he has to succeed in his mission to stop the train tragedy.
00:43 "Wait, no!"
00:47 On his final attempt, he defuses the bomb, stops the villain, and even makes up with his father. Leaving it there would have been perfect.

00:58 "Again?"
01:00 However, after his old existence had ended, he still lived on in the teacher's body.
01:06 It's supposed to be a happy resolution, but him completely taking over another man's life is anything but.

01:19 Number 29. Savages
01:22 Fake-out endings are always going to feel a little cheap, especially when the imagined conclusion is better than the actual one.
01:30 This was the case with Savages, a gritty film about weed-growing friends going up against the cartel.
01:37 It was exciting and didn't pull any punches when it came to portraying the darker side of the drug trade.
01:43 It culminated in a violent shootout, where everyone involved met a tragic end.
01:50 "You're grateful!"
01:52 This was dark, but made sense given the events that had preceded it.
01:56 You'd think that's where the credits would come in.
01:59 Instead, it was revealed that what we had just seen hadn't really happened at all.
02:04 "What really happened was more of a f*** up than a shootout."
02:08 The real finale was much more anticlimactic, with the heroes getting away scot-free.

02:18 Number 28. The Midnight Sky
02:21 Plot twists aren't a new concept.
02:23 When done correctly, they can be an excellent way of subverting the audience's expectations and making them rethink everything they'd just watched.
02:32 A poorly executed one, however, can sour the rest of the story.
02:36 "I wish you'd tell me something about your life, Harris."
02:40 Such was the case with The Midnight Sky.
02:43 Two characters, a reclusive scientist and a young girl, form a strong emotional bond as they undergo their journey together.
02:51 "We're gonna fly."
02:57 Any hopes of the two surviving to the end and continuing their paternal relationship were dashed when it was shown she'd been a figment of his imagination.
03:06 It was a bleak moment that was made worse with the final blow.
03:10 That the crew he'd been trying to help had been left with an uncertain fate.

03:18 Number 27. Wonder Woman
03:21 One common trope found in the superhero genre is an extensive battle at the end, consisting mostly of CGI and low stakes.
03:30 Wonder Woman seemed like it was going to break that mold.
03:33 "Oh my dear, you have so much to learn."
03:37 It had focused on the more human elements of war, with the heroine realizing that subduing her enemies wouldn't be enough to stop it.
03:45 The director, Patty Jenkins, even intended for the antagonist to be a human, and not a god as previously assumed.
03:53 It would have been a refreshing take, even if it wasn't as showy.
03:56 However, the studio preferred a classic VFX-laden fight, which is what we got instead.

04:07 It traded a poignant impact for flashy visuals, which caused the otherwise stellar origin to end on a shaky note.
04:15 Number 26. X-Men The Last Stand
04:26 Making extreme narrative decisions is risky enough, especially in an established franchise.

04:35 "Best defense is a good offense."
04:37 However, it's another thing entirely to immediately walk those back before the credits have even finished rolling.
04:43 X-Men The Last Stand was one of the most tragic in the original trilogy.
04:47 Several beloved mutants, including Dr. Xavier, had died.

04:55 "Charles!"
04:56 Others, like Magneto, had lost their powers, either voluntarily or by force.
05:02 Normally, choices like this would have lasting repercussions that would have a ripple effect across the following films.
05:09 Instead, they were reversed almost immediately, with Magneto indicating he still had telekinesis and Xavier surviving.
05:17 It was an immediate backpedal of the consequences they had just established, and it made the emotions they caused feel unearned.

05:30 Number 25. Safe Haven
05:32 A character suddenly being exposed as having been a ghost isn't a new plot device.
05:38 But when it works, it can be a genuine gut punch that can completely recontextualize a story.

05:52 If that doesn't hit the mark, it instead comes across like a gratuitous way of forcing a shocking twist,
05:58 up until its ghostly reveal.
06:00 Safe Haven had been a perfectly fine romantic drama.
06:04 There were plenty of dramatic turns that kept it exciting,
06:07 and so the additional development of Jo being dead the entire time was unneeded.

06:18 Having Alex find the letters she'd left behind would have gotten the point across just as well,
06:23 without retconning one of the principal roles.

06:31 Number 24. Forces of Nature
06:34 The best romantic comedies usually have one thing in common.
06:38 The two leads riding off into the sunset to live happily ever after.
06:42 When one deviates from that, it can dampen the mood.
06:45 Forces of Nature seemed like it was going to end with Ben leaving his current relationship to pursue one with Sarah instead.
06:51 The chemistry between the two was undeniable,
06:54 and the lead-up to their first kiss felt natural.
06:57 This was shattered when she reminded him that they'd only known each other for a few days.
07:07 Their short-lived relationship quickly petered out, and he carried on with his wedding.
07:12 "Farewell, Ben."
07:18 Considering everything they'd been through together up until that point,
07:22 them not getting together made the story feel pointless and unsatisfying.
07:27 "Wherever she is, I really hope she's happy."
07:31 Number 23. AI - Artificial Intelligence
07:35 It's a shame when a movie sets up a heart-wrenching finale,
07:38 only to shift to something more wholesome at the last second.
07:42 AI - Artificial Intelligence is centered around a robot child experiencing a severe existential crisis.
07:50 "My brain is falling out."
07:52 The climax of the film was intense, and even showed the robot attempting to take his own life.
07:58 For a moment, it seemed like it would end with him begging to become real as he faded away.
08:03 "Please, please, make me into a real live boy."
08:08 However, the creators decided to abandon that.
08:11 Instead, it's revealed that he'd survive, and would be given one last day with a copy of his mother.
08:17 While the ending was more hopeful, it wasn't as emotionally satisfying as a more somber closing would have been.
08:24 "So David went to sleep too."
08:26 Number 22. Seed of Chucky
08:29 Considering how over-the-top the rest of the Chucky series is,
08:33 a film about villainous dolls raising a child hardly even raised eyebrows.
08:38 "Hello, mother and father."
08:42 For the most part, it was a standard child's play picture,
08:46 classic brutal kills with moments of pure existentialism.
08:49 It seemed like it was going to end on a dramatic note with Chucky taking Tiffany's life
08:54 and then being killed by his own son.
08:57 A thematically interesting conclusion to bring the whole tale full circle.
09:01 However, that was ripped away when it suddenly cut to five years afterwards,
09:12 showing that their deaths had not been final.
09:15 It was cheap in the previous scene and made it seem more melodramatic than it needed to be.
09:20 Number 21. Grease
09:26 Grease had its silly moments, but even a whimsical number like "Beauty School Dropout"
09:35 was clearly a dream sequence, which helped the film feel more grounded in reality.

09:46 This balance was maintained up until the very end,
09:50 when Danny and Sandy rode off into the sky.
09:53 Others even waved to them as they flew away,
09:56 indicating that the bizarre moment actually occurred rather than being someone's daydream.
10:00 Had there been more moments of pure fantasy throughout,
10:03 then this bizarre and unsatisfying ending could have gone unnoticed.
10:07 But with it being left as it was, it only served to end the musical on an unnecessarily confusing note.
10:13 Number 20. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
10:22 Next on our list is the Indiana Jones film that went away from the spiritual and straight into sci-fi.
10:28 While we could stomach a lot, this film nuked the fridge big time
10:34 when the Crystal Skull awakened a generic alien who proceeded to melt Cate Blanchett's brain.
10:39 Even worse is the image of Indy witnessing a spaceship flying off into another dimension.
10:47 The ending of the last crusade, and originally the series, was perfect.
10:58 Why'd they have to go mess with it?
11:00 Number 19. Superman
11:02 Don't get us wrong, there's still something magical about 1978's Superman.
11:06 But that doesn't mean the ending makes any sense.
11:09 When Superman fails to save Lois Lane, he decides to just throw out the laws of physics.
11:14 This involves Superman nonsensically using his super speed to reverse the rotation of the planet and turn back time.
11:27 'Cause that's how it works.
11:29 Now we're not scientists, but we're pretty sure that would just kill everything, rather than save anyone's life.
11:36 This ending is more likely to leave viewers puzzled than impressed.
11:40 Number 18. The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn Part 2
11:58 There were many who'd argue that the beginning and the middle of the Twilight Saga were pretty bad, too.
12:02 But even die-hard fans had difficulty standing up for its ending.
12:06 The final battle scene has some moments, but the conclusion is simply a con, revealing that the whole battle was just a vision.
12:13 It's to be expected that a book-to-film adaptation should employ creative license, but at least make it worth their while.
12:25 "Why did you do that?"
12:27 "I've been practicing."
12:29 In the end, the epic something was an epic nothing, and an epic waste of time.

12:36 Number 17. Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen
12:43 "The Transformers? They've been here a long, long time."
12:47 While some films on this list were perhaps a little too hasty to kill people off,
12:51 the Transformers team flirted with the idea of KOing a main character, but couldn't quite follow through.
12:57 Much to our frustration.
12:59 First Sam dies and is then revived, and then the unthinkable happens as Optimus Prime looks to be on his way out.
13:09 "The last Prime is dead."
13:13 But it's okay, because he's a robot, and robots can get spare parts.
13:18 "Could that energy somehow be used to reactivate Optimus and bring him back to life?"
13:22 All that was ever needed was a service and an upgrade, and then hey presto, day is saved.
13:27 "A living Prime! I don't believe it!"
13:33 Number 16. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
13:37 "I love you."
13:38 Everyone loves an emotional ending, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2's attempt was just cringey.
13:44 "Tell you what it says, it says I love you."
13:47 "Because I love you."
13:49 Sure, it's kinda cute when the kid stands in the way of the rhino, even if it's sorta confusing as to exactly why Rhino's there,
13:56 but when the real web-slinger arrives back into shot, we just can't suspend our disbelief any further.
14:02 "Hey Spider-Man."
14:03 "I knew you'd come back."
14:15 The heart-to-heart, the fist-bump, the megaphone, and the manhole cover. It all reeks of cheese.
14:21 This ending was meant to keep us guessing, but it only had us cursing.
14:24 Number 15. The Forgotten
14:37 When in doubt, blame aliens. That's apparently what the filmmakers behind The Forgotten decided when they came up with this ending.
14:44 "Damn, he grew up, he was nine. Nine. I had nine years of memories."
14:48 The film follows Julianne Moore's character Telly, who believes she had a son, but no one else in her life remembers him.
14:54 "He always wore that hat!"
14:55 "Telly, please, you're scaring me. Tell me what's wrong."
14:58 It's an intriguing premise, which seems set to raise questions about Telly's sanity, and takes us for a ride into government conspiracy territory.
15:06 That is, until the reveal that it was all aliens.
15:09 "There are worse things than forgetting."
15:12 "No, there aren't."
15:14 "You need to forgive!"
15:22 Yep, turns out the government is working with extraterrestrials to conduct a completely nonsensical experiment about maternal instincts.
15:29 E.T., go home.
15:31 "I need more time."
15:32 Number 14. Saw 3D
15:39 The original Saw's twist ending shocked us, but man did this series jump the shark.
15:44 "If something like that doesn't get you to change your perspective on life, I don't know what will."
15:50 Remember Dr. Lawrence Gordon, the guy who cut off his foot in the first movie? Well, get this.
15:55 He managed to survive, and in the final act of Saw 3D, it's revealed that he's been Jigsaw's partner in crime ever since.
16:01 "Without you, my work over the last few years would not have been possible."
16:07 In retaliation for killing Jill, Gordon kidnaps Detective Hoffman, takes him to a familiar room, and declares the game officially over.
16:14 It's totally ludicrous, but at least the franchise got marginally better with 2017's Jigsaw.
16:21 "Game over."
16:22 "Noooo!"
16:24 Number 13. The Number 23
16:28 In this psychological thriller from Joel Schumacher, Jim Carrey's character Walter finds a book titled The Number 23.
16:35 It tells the story of a detective who murdered his own girlfriend.
16:38 With an increasing amount of things in common with the character and the eponymous number seemingly popping up everywhere in his life,
16:44 his own sanity begins to unravel as he pulls at each thread of the mystery.
16:48 What mysterious forces could be at work?
16:50 "Someday I'm gonna write a book, and I'll do it to somebody else."
16:53 "Walter."
16:54 "Oh God."
16:55 "Whoever wrote it knows you very well, and only they can give you your answers."
16:58 Well, as it turns out, it was actually Walter who wrote the book himself, before giving himself amnesia.
17:04 Of course.
17:05 "Mom, who wrote the book?"
17:06 "I don't know."
17:07 "Who wrote it? Tell him."
17:10 "You wrote the book, Walter."
17:13 Number 12. Lucy
17:15 It's hard to say whether Lucy is a smart story stuck in a dumb movie, or a dumb story stuck in a smart movie.
17:21 One thing's for certain, though.
17:27 Its ending is 100% idiotic.
17:29 As her brain reaches maximum capacity, Lucy transcends all humankind,
17:34 becomes one with the space-time continuum,
17:36 and leaves behind a flash drive for Dr. Morgan Freeman.
17:39 It almost feels like director Luc Besson is trying to channel 2001.
17:48 But instead of going out on a profound note,
17:50 Lucy leaves the audience slapping their foreheads in frustration.
17:54 Number 11. Serenity
17:56 Matthew McConaughey has starred in some incredible films,
18:00 and Serenity is not one of them.
18:02 "Sir, we paid you 700 bucks for this."
18:04 What starts off as a mystery thriller with an impressive cast soon becomes, well, a computer game.
18:10 Yeah, they're all in a computer game,
18:12 except for Matthew McConaughey's son Patrick,
18:14 who's real and created the game.
18:16 "He's got this whole world.
18:19 There's this guy on a boat,
18:21 and he's catching fish."
18:23 It turns out the scenes that seem like flashbacks of Patrick are actually in the here and now.
18:28 "If I didn't catch fish all day, I'd find a way to kill you."
18:35 This last fact is revealed at the end when Patrick kills his abusive stepdad.
18:39 Sadly, by this point, the audience's suspension of disbelief is already dead.
18:44 "Ahhhh!
18:46 Patrick!
18:48 Ahhhh!"
18:53 #10. Now You See Me
18:55 "Oh yes, that would be, uh, what do the kids call it these days?
18:58 Oh yes, that's right, magic."
18:59 A good magic trick builds anticipation that leads towards some sort of big reveal.
19:04 And understandably, audiences were expecting the same from the ending of Now You See Me.
19:09 The vast majority of the film is seriously slick,
19:12 the magic is impressive,
19:13 and left us all waiting on the edge of our seats for the conclusion.
19:16 But when that presented itself as one double-agent cop
19:20 and a series of plot holes big enough to personally fall into,
19:23 viewers were sighing rather than smiling.
19:26 "Dylan?
19:28 Wait a minute.
19:30 Dylan!
19:31 How did this happen?"
19:33 "Ahhhh!"
19:37 "Ahhhh!"
19:39 "Dylan!"
19:41 #9. Star Trek - Into Darkness
19:49 Into Darkness was such an awesome follow-up to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot
19:53 that it's easy to forgive the film's absurd ending.
19:56 "My name is Khan."
19:59 With that said, it was a pretty absurd ending.
20:02 Rather than paying homage to Wrath of Khan,
20:05 Into Darkness literally recreates its spiritual successor's iconic climax.
20:11 #8. The Curse of Kirk
20:16 The only difference is that Kirk and Spock reverse roles,
20:24 leading to Kirk's demise and Spock making William Shatner's infamously silly cursing sound even sillier.
20:30 "Kirk!"
20:35 Don't worry though, because Bones basically cures death and brings Kirk back to life.
20:40 Well, that's convenient.
20:42 "Oh, don't be so melodramatic. You're barely dead."
20:45 #8. Cats
20:47 The ending, you say?
20:49 How about the whole movie?
20:51 That's a good point, but the ending is particularly bonkers.
20:54 "Get out!"
20:55 Admittedly, director Tom Hooper had his work cut out for him
20:58 when he decided to adapt Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical,
21:01 which doesn't really make sense either.
21:03 But you can get away with levels of absurdity on stage that don't necessarily translate to film.
21:08 The ending of Cats sees outcast Grizabella singing a song at the Jellicle Ball
21:13 that wins her a ride on a chandelier to the Heaviside Lair,
21:16 a metaphor for rebirth that's also a literal place.
21:19 Of some sort.
21:21 This is despite the efforts of the evil Macavity, who for some reason has magic powers.
21:26 Yeah, makes sense of that.
21:27 "Heaviside Lair, here I come!"
21:33 "Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!"
21:36 "Aaaah!"
21:39 #7. The Matrix Revolutions
21:42 By the end of the third film in this franchise,
21:44 the storyline had become so convoluted that it needed something extra special
21:49 to hold it all together.
21:51 "The program Smith has grown beyond your control.
21:54 Soon he will spread through the city as he spread through the Matrix."
21:57 Unfortunately, the film dodged that idea entirely.
22:00 Sure, Neo's sacrifice is heroic and Smith's demise is a good thing,
22:04 but what about everybody else plugged into the Matrix?
22:07 "He ended the war! The machines are gone!
22:10 The war is over, sir, the war is over!"
22:12 Has the whole thing just been explained away by a brief encounter on a park bench?
22:17 A pretty sunrise is nice, but it doesn't answer any questions.
22:20 "Everything's okay now."
22:22 How long will there be peace?
22:24 Will the ones who won out actually be freed?
22:26 And what does the Oracle mean that we'll see Neo again?
22:29 "Will we ever see him again?"
22:32 "I suspect so. Someday."
22:36 #6. War of the Worlds
22:39 Arguably, Steven Spielberg was fated to disappoint from the start
22:42 by choosing to remain loyal to War of the Worlds' source material.
22:45 This means that the aliens are defeated by germs.
22:48 Did these intergalactic travelers learn nothing from the extraterrestrials
22:52 who were defeated by water and signs?
22:54 Do your research, aliens!
22:56 Still, the movie looks set to challenge us with an ambiguous and powerful ending
23:00 since Rey's son, Robby, presumably died after stupidly running into battle.
23:05 "Robby!"
23:13 But guess what? He's alive, without a scratch on him.
23:17 And the narration wraps up everything in a nice, tidy bow.
23:21 "They were undone, destroyed, after all of man's weapons and devices had failed
23:27 by the tiniest creatures that God and his wisdom put upon this earth."
23:32 #5. The Happening
23:34 "Why is this happening?"
23:36 "I don't know for sure, Josh."
23:39 Frankly, when it comes to bad endings, M. Night Shyamalan's movies
23:42 left us spoiled for choice.
23:44 Signs, the village, Lady in the Water…
23:47 "There were children in that town!"
23:48 "Elliot, please tell us what to do!"
23:50 "I need a second, okay? Why can't anybody give me a goddamn second?!"
23:53 Audiences still fondly remember the twist ending in his breakout film, The Sixth Sense,
23:58 but man, have there been a lot of disappointments since.
24:01 Ultimately, though, we had to go with The Happening.
24:03 "Plants and trees just can't pick up and move when they feel threatened like other species.
24:06 They have only one option, to rapidly evolve their chemistry."
24:10 Sure, there's a well-meaning environmental message in there,
24:14 but you're saying that the mysterious mass self-inflicted deaths
24:18 in the northeastern United States were set in motion by trees?
24:22 "Global warming."
24:24 "Temperature goes up a fraction of a degree, makes them disoriented, maybe."
24:29 And trees are now about to cause global catastrophe.
24:33 We sat through this entire film for that?
24:36 "To be perfectly honest, this was an act of nature, and we'll never fully understand it."
24:42 Number 4. Planet of the Apes.
24:45 Messing with the classic film's iconic twist ending?
24:48 That's just bananas.
24:50 "You maniacs! You blew it up!"
24:55 In the famous 1968 film, Charlton Heston's George Taylor realizes
24:59 that the Planet of the Apes is really Earth.
25:01 He's traveled to the far future.
25:03 For his 2001 reboot, Tim Burton decided to add a different twist,
25:07 but one that has more shock value than logic.
25:10 The hero returns home to discover that apes have taken over,
25:20 shown by a dramatically reworked Abe Lincoln memorial.
25:23 [Music]
25:33 This is actually closer to the source material, but in the novel,
25:36 centuries have passed allowing time for apes to become the dominant species.
25:40 In the movie, there's no explanation whatsoever.
25:43 And even if this did make sense, it would still pale in comparison to the original.

25:53 Number 3. Law-abiding Citizen.
25:56 Normally, viewers are rooting for the villain to lose.
26:00 However, there are plenty of exceptions to this rule,
26:03 with Clyde from Law-abiding Citizen being one of the most notable.
26:06 After witnessing the horrific fates of his family
26:09 and subsequently being failed by the justice system,
26:12 seeing him take down those at fault felt justified.
26:15 "I'm sorry, Nick."
26:17 Him successfully carrying out his final act of revenge
26:21 would have been the perfect way to cap the thriller.
26:23 Instead, they opted for a typical Hollywood finale,
26:26 where the hero outsmarted him at the last second.
26:29 "It's a decision you have to live with for the rest of your life.
26:32 Which I figure by now is about 25 more seconds."
26:36 It derailed the story and gave the protagonist what many felt was an undeserved win.
26:42 Clyde coming out on top would have been the perfect cathartic ending,
26:46 rather than the typical one we got instead.

26:54 Number 2. I Am Legend.
26:56 Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend is a classic that inspired the movies
27:01 The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man.
27:03 "We may have something here."
27:05 [Screaming]
27:09 What made it so memorable was its ending,
27:11 when vampire hunter Robert Neville realizes that for vampires,
27:15 he is the terrifying monster preying on the innocent.
27:18 [Music]
27:22 The Will Smith vehicle, I Am Legend, seemed to be going in the same direction,
27:26 until sending Smith out with a bang and his friends on to live happily ever after.
27:31 "Dr. Robert Neville dedicated his life to the discovery of a cure
27:36 and the restoration of humanity."
27:39 It's a conclusion that completely undermines the source material in favor of pure cliché.
27:44 Although an alternate ending was released on DVD,
27:47 this movie's awful ending has become legendary.
