00:00The primal questions of any marriage.
00:04What are you thinking?
00:06How are you feeling?
00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo,
00:09and today we're counting down our picks for the most devastating,
00:12frightening, and or unsettling endings in films.
00:16Spoilers ahead.
00:17This is Jessie, the roughest, toughest cowgirl in the whole west.
00:21She loves critters, but none more than her best pal, Bullseye.
00:2510. The New King – Hereditary
00:38Peter Graham goes through the ringer as his family falls apart.
00:41Not only are his sister and father dead, he then has to avoid his possessed mother.
00:46After being revived, he enters the treehouse and finds himself to be King Paimon.
00:51It's nothing short of unsettling after a whirlwind of tragedy.
00:55There's nothing to do but reluctantly accept this new reality.
01:22But the chaos around him is nothing short of freaky.
01:26It appears that the coven finally gets what it wants in this shady ritual.
01:30As filmmaker Ari Aster leaves you pondering existence,
01:34he provides one last disturbing note to finish the story.
01:409. The Sound of Silence – The Graduate
01:52Ben Braddock has had nothing short of a strange time in his post-graduate life.
01:56While in the midst of an affair with Mrs. Robinson,
01:59he falls for the older woman's daughter Elaine.
02:02I don't know what to say.
02:03Maybe we can get together sometime and talk about it.
02:06Really incredible.
02:07Braddock ends up interrupting the latter's wedding and riding off with her in a bus.
02:12This appears to be a happy ending, until we see that the two look completely lost.
02:17It's uncertain whether or not they'll last,
02:19with the pair going silent as they ride away.
02:22They might have jumped the gun a little too soon,
02:25and possibly ruined one or both of their lives.
02:28Accompanied by the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel,
02:31the melancholic ending makes us wonder whether cinematic romance is all it's cracked up to be.
02:458. Forgetting It – Chinatown
02:50In the third act of this film noir,
03:00private detective Jake Giddes uncovers a conspiracy and the horrors within the Mulray family.
03:06Giddes tries to help Evelyn and her daughter get away,
03:09but the police intervene and kill Evelyn.
03:12The violent conclusion leaves the private eye looking hopeless in the face of corruption.
03:17He realizes that this case is much worse than he could have imagined,
03:21breaking down in a devastating finale.
03:24Sometimes the hero doesn't win, and even makes things worse.
03:28Hearing a final, immortal line of dialogue,
03:30the broken protagonist walks away from a complete mess, leaving us perturbed.
03:367. Giving the Toys Away – Toy Story 3
03:48Andy's collection of toys have gone through a lot,
03:51even escaping a fiery death at one point during Toy Story 3.
03:55Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the family are still trapped in the house,
03:59and the only way to get out is to find a way out.
04:02Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang ultimately find themselves with another owner.
04:08The heartfelt ending gives them a final moment
04:11before their human friend Andy leaves for college, and they begin anew.
04:22It's such a bittersweet sequence, filled with all the sadness and uncertainty of goodbyes.
04:28For an animated movie about talking playthings,
04:31Pixar leaves us on a mature note as we think about the concept of growing up.
04:36You might cry or be left feeling melancholic,
04:39depending on how you interpret this one.
04:516. The Box – 7
05:02After the serial killer John Doe turns himself in,
05:05he takes Detective Mills and Somerset to a remote location.
05:09This prompts one of the most chilling endings of the 1990s.
05:13I'm gonna open it.
05:15When I said I admired you, I meant what I said.
05:18The gruesome contents of a package are said to be the head of Mills' wife,
05:22prompting the latter to seek revenge on Doe.
05:25It's all part of the killer's plan to engineer the last steps of his seven deadly kills,
05:30putting these sins into practice.
05:32The villain finishes out his brutal scheme, essentially from beyond the grave.
05:37Most movie bad guys are awful, but this proves that some are downright diabolical.
05:535. The Ghostly Twist – The Sixth Sense
05:57Why, Malcolm?
06:01What? What is it?
06:05Why did you leave me?
06:07Helping a kid who sees dead people,
06:09Dr. Malcolm Crowe doesn't understand that he has some ghostly problems of his own.
06:14Cole, I was really interested in what you told me at the hospital.
06:18I'd like to hear more about it.
06:20Crowe later tries to reunite with his wife,
06:22but realizes he didn't survive the opening scene where he got shot.
06:26This shocking twist marks one of M. Night Shyamalan's greatest filmmaking feats.
06:31As viewers, we have to rethink everything we've just seen,
06:34which gives the story a newer, much darker context.
06:38The hero comes to understand that he can't exactly have his happy ending.
06:42With Bruce Willis' fantastic performance,
06:45the emotional and unexpected finale gives us chills to this day.
06:49I think I can go now.
06:56I just needed to do a couple things.
06:584. Burning the Bear – Midsommar
07:01One to be chosen by the Queen. Nine in all to die and be reborn.
07:09Danny and Christian have a questionable relationship
07:12that's pushed to extremes during their deadly visit to Sweden.
07:16Many others are killed, but the final segments take it all up a notch.
07:20Indeed, Christian ends up paralyzed as Danny becomes the May Queen.
07:24This horror plot does more than ensure there's not going to be a happily ever after.
07:29Hello, there you are. Listen, you can't speak, you can't move, alright?
07:38She ultimately has to choose who else will die in a chilling finale.
07:43As the villagers play the couple against each other,
07:45they let the lead character seal her lover's fate.
07:48It's exactly the kind of horrifying conclusion you'd expect from an Ari Aster film.
07:593. The Vision Comes True – Don't Look Now
08:03It's okay. I have a friend. I won't hurt you.
08:12After the death of their daughter, a family grieves in Venice.
08:16Dad, John Baxter, starts to have all kinds of spooky visions.
08:20These end up being glimpses into the future, but by the time he realizes that, it's too late.
08:31He sees his child's red coat once more on his killer.
08:35With the hero's death, the twisted nature of this thriller comes to light.
08:39It's definitely a gut punch for all of us hoping that the haunting mystery would
08:43end on a better note. Under the skilled direction of Nicolas Roeg,
08:47Don't Look Now channels grief, violence, and family strife into a finale you'll never forget.
08:582. End of the Maze – The Shining
09:04The ending of this Stephen King adaptation is more than a little ominous.
09:08Wendy and Danny manage to escape, and Jack Torrance is left to meet his demise.
09:14It would seem that the nightmare at the Overlook Hotel is over.
09:21Before letting us go, though, director Stanley Kubrick points us towards a vintage photograph
09:27that shows Jack at a party decades before. This leads us to believe that maybe the lead
09:32character's identity is more complicated than we could have imagined. It's an unsettling way
09:38to end things, as we're left wondering about this haunting ghost story.
09:51Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
09:55The Older Woman – Orphan
09:57Esther's true age and identity are revealed, and she forces her new family into a violent finale.

11:20Too Soon – The Mist
11:22If things aren't dire enough by this point in The Mist,
11:30the survivors now believe they're about to die and decide to take matters into their own hands.
11:36So leader David makes the impossible decision to use the last of his ammo
11:40on the others in a show of mercy.
11:53Afterwards, he sees the military and learns they all could have been saved.
12:00It's an earth-shattering realization that leaves us speechless. Thanks to Thomas Jane's acting,
12:06his character's final scream makes us feel the pure anguish he's experiencing.
12:11It's one of the most tragic endings on this side of the 21st century,
12:15showing that even heroes sometimes can't catch a break.
