00:00This month, America marks a dark and somber anniversary.
00:06Two years since a radical MAGA majority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
00:12The decision to overturn Roe will go down as one of the worst Supreme Court cases in
00:17modern times.
00:19It will be remembered as one of the most draconian reversals of individual liberty in American
00:25history.
00:27There should be no question who brought our country to this crisis.
00:30It was Donald Trump and hard-right Republicans who have made clear that they will not rest
00:35until freedom of choice is eliminated across the country.
00:40Democrats will not stand for Republicans' relentless attacks on reproductive freedoms.
00:45This week, the Senate will begin our defense of freedom of choice with a vote to protect
00:51access to contraceptives.
00:54Before the Memorial Day holiday, I began the process for the Senate to consider the
01:02Right to Contraception Act, led by Senators Markey and Hirono.
01:06Today, I just filed cloture on the motion to proceed to that bill.
01:12Members should expect a vote moving forward on the Right to Contraception Act on Wednesday.
01:18Federal protections for contraceptives is a critical piece of protecting American women's
01:25reproductive freedoms.
01:28This legislation would codify the right to contraception into federal law.
01:33For those who think that federal protections for birth control are unnecessary, just look
01:37at what's happening at the state level.
01:40Republican governors in Virginia and Nevada have already vetoed bills to protect birth
01:45control.
01:46The Arizona legislature has blocked similar bills, too.
01:51The federal government should absolutely have a say in ensuring every American has access
01:56to birth control if they need it.
01:59And there will be more action to come after that.
02:02Over the coming weeks, Senate Democrats will put reproductive freedoms front and center
02:07before this chamber so that the American people can see for themselves who will stand up to
02:14defend their fundamental liberties.
02:16The erosion of freedom of choice is perhaps the defining worry for tens of millions of
02:22Americans since the MAGA Court eliminated Roe.
02:25Today, at least 20 states have near-total bans or severe restrictions on abortion.
02:31Tens of millions of women lack access to reproductive care.
02:36And even services like IVF, which millions of Americans have relied on to have children
02:43and to start families, can no longer be assumed as totally safe.
02:48None of this happened in a vacuum.
02:50This is all a direct result of Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans who made the repeal of
02:55Roe their North Star for decades.
02:57And Republicans aren't even hiding it.
03:00Donald Trump in fact said, quote, he was proudly the person responsible, unquote, for the disastrous
03:08Roe reversal.
03:11Does anyone seriously think that if Donald Trump and Republicans get into power again
03:15that they won't try to restrict abortion and reproductive care even more?
03:20Of course they will.
03:21Of course they will.
03:23That's why it's more important now than ever that we pass legislation like the Right to
03:28Contraception Act to protect this vital lifeline for millions of women across the country.
03:35This week and in future weeks, Senate Republicans will have to answer for their anti-abortion
03:41anti-women agenda.
03:43And my Republican colleagues should know that the American people are closely watching.
