00:25Good people of Shrewsbury!
00:29Today we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings
00:40that united brave service personnel from air, sea and land forces.
00:51By the day's end, over 150,000 Allied troops had stormed
01:01the now famous Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha beaches
01:11to achieve a toehold in France.
01:16In the weeks that followed, the Allies fought bitterly against the determined foe
01:24from the unforgiving countryside of Normandy to the liberation of Paris two months later.
01:34We should all remember and never forget the sacrifice and courage of all those involved
01:43including all those families who were left behind.
01:50Today we use this commemoration to pay our tribute to those who gave so much
02:00to secure the freedom we all enjoy today.
