The government has shown strong political will in carrying out diesel subsidy rationalisation, although the move may not be popular, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said this issue had been discussed for years and prime ministers before him had also agreed that subsidy rationalisation must be implemented.

05:05 It is easier if we don't take action. But we save 1.2 billion.
05:12 Diesel, hopefully, can save around 4 billion.
05:19 So for this, almost 10 billion, what is it for?
05:24 Diesel is partly to meet the needs of public transportation.
05:36 Partly to add to the Rahmah cash flow, which has now reached 10 billion.
05:48 Apart from the diesel, which has gone up from 300 to 700 ringgit. Imagine our STR for 9 million people,
05:57 who are directly subsidised, that's 10 billion ringgit.
06:02 Then how many other steps do we take? So the money is not to raise the minister's allowance,
06:09 or for other interests. I put this thing.
06:15 We have to understand, first, subsidising is to ensure that subsidies are not given to the rich.
06:27 But I see in the political arena, there are many.
06:32 I say, subsidies are like donations, how can it be given to the rich?
06:36 "Oh, he said, it's insulting to the people because the people accept donations."
06:40 What's wrong with the people accepting donations from the government?
06:43 For me, there is no problem.
06:45 The responsibility of the government is to provide school aid.
06:49 Yes, that's our responsibility.
06:53 It's good for the people, but it's confusing.
06:57 We are like increasing the price of oil.
07:01 That's what's being tied up now, increasing the price of oil.
07:05 In the past, we promised, "Today we win, tomorrow the price of oil will go down."
07:11 That can be repeated. I said that in 2008.
07:17 That's right. Because at that time, the price of oil was high compared to the oil exporters,
07:24 especially Saudi Arabia.
07:25 When Saudi Arabia was about 50 cents, we were about 1.80 cents.
07:30 Now, as we know, we are 2.05 cents, Saudi Arabia is 2.95 cents.
07:38 So, the price of oil is only being reduced, the cost is increasing.
07:43 How do you then relate the cost in 2008 with 2024?
07:48 It's basic economics.
07:51 But the important thing is, when we raise the subsidy for diesel,
07:57 he gives the most.
07:59 If there are people who are in trouble,
08:05 we can help.
08:07 We can help the vegetable gardeners, the small-scale farmers.
08:10 We do research, and they are left behind.
08:12 He said, "If that's the case, we have to raise the subsidy because we use a lot of diesel."
08:16 We consider. There is no problem.
08:19 If it's more than 4 billion, and we are left with 3.5 billion, fine.
08:24 But don't have an effect that burdens the people.
08:28 That's actually our approach.
