00:00The longest stage of the Giro Next Gen in 2024, 182km rattling along and through the
00:13Po River Valley and the flatlands before a final ascent up to Zocca with a 12km climb.
00:22Bright sunshine down at the start line at Monte Grotto Terme, Lorenzo Nespoli in blue
00:29in second place in the King of the Mountains competition, Paul Magnier continuing to wear
00:33the red jersey, Janowida still from Lotto Destiny in firm control of the general classification.
00:42The riders got underway and the flag dropped on time. It was a day when there was a high
00:48chance and a high probability that the breakaway would make it to the line despite being the
00:53last genuine opportunity to shake things up in the general classification. A series
00:57of attacks eventually led to the formation of an eight-rider breakaway group at the front
01:03of the race, including the Hooparts of Wonte, the French national under-23 champion Noah
01:08Isadore, Callum Thornley too on the front here from Trinity Racing. Four Italians represented
01:15at the front and one German as well, building up a very healthy advantage over a peloton
01:20that seemed prepared to let this break go to the line, having a lead of over six minutes
01:24at one point as they headed ever closer towards the final Zocca climb. 12.2km in total, the
01:30average gradient 4.4%. Lotto Destiny still in control of the peloton, setting the pace
01:39on the back, but with 10km to go and still with an advantage of four minutes and 19 seconds,
01:44the breakaway started to believe that they would have this one as Lotto Destiny were
01:48just riding a controlling pace, keeping the pink jersey safe. That was when Hooparts launched
01:53his attack and only two riders were able to go with him, Callum Thornley and Samuele Privitera.
02:01Those riders went clear, building up a lead of two minutes and 42 seconds over the pink
02:05jersey group. The remains of the breakaway caught in between. But at the front of the
02:14race, Hooparts, the 22-year-old Dutch rider, went on the offensive and Callum Thornley
02:21and Samuele Privitera were struggling to follow. So Hooparts soloing off the front, two minutes
02:30and 37 seconds ahead of the pink jersey group and rapidly going out of sight. A very impressive
02:37attack, very powerful. Jose Ramon Muniz, the Mexican rider, then did attack and did
02:52get a small advantage. In the meantime though, at the front of the race, Hooparts soloing
02:58to victory, assured of victory and enjoying his moments. The winner of Gent-Werdelgem
03:04under 23, Espoir, this year coming to the Giro Next Gen and taking a very comfortable
03:11and very impressive victory on stage 7. The breakaway then came in behind him with Callum
03:17Thornley in second place and Samuele Privitera finishing in third behind Hooparts, who could
03:23already start to celebrate victory. A couple of minutes after the race had been won, the
03:31peloton came to the line. Jose Ramon Muniz just about off the front of the Maglia Rosa
03:37group. Hooparts though, no doubt about the winner, an emphatic victory from a very, very
03:43talented young star in the making. Ahead of Callum Thornley by 25 seconds and Privitera
03:48in third place at 48. There was no change in the top 10 in the general classification,
03:53so Jan Oueda continues to hold a 52-second lead with one stage remaining. Paul Magnier
03:57is close to winning the points classification, could be an opportunity for him to extend
04:01his lead tomorrow. King of the Mountain still being headed by Jan Oueda, but only by one
04:06solitary point to Nespoli. And Oueda also the best young rider, ahead of Pablo Torres
04:12by 52 seconds. No change either in the best Italian rider with one stage remaining, Florian
04:17Caggiamini, still has a one-minute and 14-second lead over Alessandro Pinarello.
