00:00In bright summery weather, the Giro Next Gen came to its conclusion with a testing hilly
00:11circuit race.
00:13A total of six categorised climbs on the road today, so plenty of King of the Mountains
00:17points and a final circuit up and over the Bottinoro climb five times in total.
00:23The Giro Next Gen would be decided on stage eight, with Amalia Rosa hoping to defend his
00:29lead in the general classification.
00:31An opportunity though for Lorenzo Nespoli to seize control of the King of the Mountains
00:35competition if he were to get in a breakaway.
00:38Jarno Wida though looking confident of overall victory and Paul Magni in the red jersey hoping
00:44not only to secure his victory in the points classification but if he could survive the
00:47series of climbs, the Soudal Quick-Step man would be looking at the possibility of a third
00:53stage win.
00:54There was an attack as soon as the flag dropped from Jarno Wida that didn't last very long.
00:59Amalia Rosa pulled back into the peloton and eventually a breakaway did establish itself
01:05that grew and grew.
01:06Eleven riders at first, including three from Visma Lisa Bike and Lorenzo Nespoli, the man
01:12who sits just one point down in the King of the Mountains classification, already moving
01:17into the lead as they hit the final circuit with three laps still to go and an advantage
01:22of one and a half minutes over the chase.
01:25Fifty-two seconds then to a quartet of riders trying to make their way across to the front
01:29of the race as the riders at the front hit the Bertinoro climb where it started to put
01:37some of the riders at the back into difficulty at the breakaway and also at the back end
01:41of the peloton.
01:42Riders struggling with the steep slopes of the Bertinoro climb, Nespoli though going
01:46about his business of racking up King of the Mountains points and moving into a commanding
01:50lead in that competition.
01:54The man wearing the blue jersey on behalf of Janu Wida.
01:57Good day out for Nespoli.
01:58In the meantime, though, several teams working hard to control the breakaway and to bring
02:04it back for a bunch sprint as those riders who'd been distanced on the Bertinoro climb
02:08got back on to the riders at the front of the race, setting a good pace and the riders
02:14from Decathlon, AG2R La Mondiale and Visma Lisa Bike combining to give this breakaway
02:19a strong chance of staying away all the way to the line.
02:22So really good cohesion in this group of riders at the front of the race.
02:27At the back, though, in the peloton, an attack from a rider from the Italian national team
02:32sensing that the chase was beginning to stall a little bit, even though the gap had come
02:37down to 47 seconds with 22.7 kilometres to go.
02:42A lack of teams and a lack of cohesion in the peloton and still a breakaway working
02:46harmoniously together as they took the bell and out on to the final lap of this difficult
02:52circuit.
02:53One more ascent of the Bertinoro climb that could split not only the peloton, but the
02:57breakaway at the front of the race.
02:59The time gap, though, under a minute.
03:01So in the balance, 44 seconds.
03:04And there, Maglio Rosa himself working on the front to bring this back for a sprint
03:07for his teammates for Lotto Destiny.
03:11As they hit the Bertinoro climb for the final time, it was Visma Lisa Bike who began to
03:14split the race apart at the front of the race.
03:18Piling on the pressure, Luke Tuckwell able to live with the pace being set on the climb
03:22for the final time.
03:23Up and over and 2.6 kilometres to go.
03:27Still a group of some nine riders or thereabouts heading for the final kilometre.
03:32Visma Lisa Bike, Bardiani as well.
03:35Both those teams with multiple representatives in the front.
03:38And just one Lidl Trek rider there, that was Niklas Behrens trying to stay with the acceleration
03:44from the lead out from Pietro Matteo.
03:47The man from Visma Lisa Bike on his wheel, the 19-year-old new signing from Great Britain,
03:52Matt Brennan, who opened up his sprint as Bardiani got themselves organised as well
03:57in the shape of Luca Palletti sprinting off the wheel.
04:00But Niklas Behrens on the wheel of Matt Brennan as he head for the line, switching down to
04:05the middle of the road and running the man from Visma Lisa Bike very close.
04:10Matt Brennan holding him off in the end by half a wheel length and another tremendous
04:17victory going to Matt Brennan.
04:19The sprint behind for the minor placings where Paul Magnier was close and picking up further
04:22points in the points classification.
04:26But drifting in on the wheels, the Magliarosa Janna Wida winning the Giro Next Gen by a
04:31handsome margin to go with his two stage victories.
04:34Job done for Lotto Destiny, who piloted their young leader to perfection throughout eight
04:45days of racing.
04:46Victory though for Matt Brennan, a third win of 2024 ahead of Niklas Behrens and Palletti
04:51in third place.
04:55Janna Wida there on a podium that took a little bit of a shake up on the final stage, a tremendous
05:01victory though for him, winning the general classification.
05:06Another notable achievement to go to his victory at the Alpe d'Isere, Wida beating Pablo Torres
05:11and Palmatti moving up into third place on the final stage.
05:16Paul Magnier holding off the challenge of Tim Thorn-Tutenberg to win the points classification.
05:22And a new King of the Mountains on the final day, Lorenzo Nespoli's presence in the breakaway
05:26gave him a handsome margin of victory in the end in the King of the Mountains.
05:31The 18-year-old Janna Wida also winning the best young riders classification ahead of
05:36Pablo Torres in second place.
05:40And Florian Cagimini holding on to the best Italian in the classification ahead of Alessandro
05:45Pinarello in second place.
05:48The team though, VF Group Bariani CSF-Faisane overall winning the team's classification
05:54at the Giro Next Gen in 2024.
