"Yankele" - Yiddish Song - Jewish Music by Mordechai Gebirtig - New Arrangement

Yiddish songs don't come much more lovely than this famous Yiddish lullaby by the celebrated poet and songwriter Mordechai Gebirtig, who was murdered in the Holocaust. Marc Berman sings Eugene Kaminsky's recently revised arrangement of this beautiful Yiddish song. Indeed, this Jewish song is so well-known that many think of it as a Yiddish folk song.

Mordechai Gebirtig (1877 – 1942), who wrote the music and words of the song, was a Jewish poet and songwriter who lived in Poland. He was murdered by the Nazis in the Kraków Ghetto. Many of Gebirtig's songs have become so well known that they are thought of as Yiddish folk songs. These Jewish "folk songs" include "Moyshele Mayn Fraynd," "Reyzele," "Es brent," and "Kinder Yorn."
Israeli musician Eugene Kaminsky was born in Russia, in Chelyabinsk. There he started his education and fell deeply in love with music. Coming to Israel at the age of 14, he graduated with a Master of Music degree in composition from the Jerusalem Academy of Music. Upon finishing his studies, he taught music history and theory at Kiryat Yam Conservatory. As a piano teacher, Mr. Kaminsky has served as a member of an international jury of the Modiin Piano Competition. He writes orchestral and chamber arrangements. He also writes poetry in Russian, Hebrew and English and has written the libretto of an opera by Israeli composer Nissim Khalifa. Mr. Kaminsky’s arrangement of Yankele was first performed by the Beersheba Orchestra.
