Ewan Brown wins Highland Cross 2024.
Transcript
00:00Well Ewan, congratulations on winning the Highland Cross for 2024.
00:04Not just winning it, a brand new record.
00:06Thank you very much, I'm very chuffed with that.
00:08Is it sinking in? Is it something that you aimed for?
00:11I was definitely aware of it and I had times in my mind
00:14and I knew that to get it you'd need to push.
00:17There was no way of just taking the run easy and then biking hard.
00:20It had to be a fine mix of running hard just to the limit
00:24and then enough in the legs to push it hard.
00:27I just about got it.
00:30Is this your debut in the event or have you taken part before?
00:33No, this is my first time running it.
00:35I'm pretty familiar with the Grand Afrique, although I did go slightly the wrong way
00:39on the bridge crossing at the bottom of the climb.
00:43It didn't cost too much.
00:45I was hoping that I didn't miss the record by a little amount that I lost.
00:50How did you become aware of the event?
00:52Through friends really.
00:54I made friends with Gillian Craig who had done the race a few times
00:58and then Ross, who's won it the last few years.
01:01Do you have much experience taking part in triathlon before?
01:04Yes, I've done a lot of running and cycling through triathlon
01:08and I'm a pretty decent runner and not too bad on the bike.
01:11I've done the Celtman and the Celtman a half and Applecross triathlon
01:14and plenty of other triathlons.
01:17I'm a bit of an old timer now.
01:20How did you find the conditions?
01:22It was perfect to be honest.
01:24It was quite wet underfoot on the run so it was a little bit slippy.
01:27But there was a bit of a tailwind on the run.
01:30It wasn't too warm.
01:32And then on the bike it was nice and dry on the roads
01:35and then there was a pretty good tailwind.
01:38And were you at the front from the very start or did you find yourself in a...
01:41Yes, there was one run I went off and caught him after 4 or 5k
01:46and then when I went the wrong way he leapfrogged me again
01:48and it wasn't far.
01:50And then there was a way on my own.
01:52In terms of your athletic career, where would you rank this?
01:55Oh, it's up there.
01:57I think the longevity of the event and the esteem that it's held
02:01is quite something.
02:03A lot of events are quite new
02:05so to have an event with a 40 year history
02:07with some good athletes doing it
02:09it might sink in in a while.
02:13And I appreciate you've only just crossed the finishing line a few minutes ago
02:16but are you already thinking about 2025?
02:18Oh no, give us a few weeks.
02:20I was thinking about it as I was running
02:22thinking I really hope I get the record today
02:24because it's such a good day that I don't want to come back and have to try again.
02:28Well congratulations not just for winning it
02:31but also for writing your name in the history books.
02:33Thank you very much.
02:34Fastest man ever.
02:35Thank you very much. Cheers.
