00:00STSS, a deadly disease in the Philippines, has hit almost 1,000 people in Japan.
00:07But it's rare and is not yet considered a public health concern by the health department.
00:11The people are quick to catch it and how to avoid it, let Rafi Tima learn.
00:21It's up to some health experts and authorities in Japan
00:24to prevent the outbreak of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome or STSS there.
00:29From January to June, almost 1,000 cases were reported in Japan,
00:33which resulted in the deaths of 77 people.
00:36In Tokyo alone, the number of reported cases tripled compared to last year.
00:41Although the cause of the increase in the number of STSS cases is still unknown,
00:45it may have something to do with the relaxation of restrictions after the COVID-19 pandemic.
00:50But according to infectious disease expert Dr. Rod Ginsolante,
00:53the bacteria that causes it are not new.
00:56It can also be the cause of pharyngitis or pneumonia.
00:59The increase in cases in Japan is more likely.
01:02There is this form of a group A streptococcus pyogenes infection
01:07that involves the skin and soft tissue.
01:09It means that it starts in the skin and then it can cause a severe form of skin infection.
01:17Although it is rare, it is found in the Philippines
01:20that it often affects people with diabetes and other comorbidities.
01:24It is said that the percentage of deaths is high because it spreads quickly
01:27and often the first symptoms are not immediately noticed.
01:31When they go to the hospital because of the rapid spread of this infection,
01:37usually the blood pressure is low and it is difficult to breathe.
01:42And that's why a lot of these patients are really difficult to save
01:46if they go to the hospital late.
01:49The disease begins with an injury.
01:51If neglected, it will have an infection that enters the blood
01:55and becomes the cause of STSS, especially in low immune systems.
02:00It starts, there are tumors coming out,
02:03then you can get a fever and your fever goes back and then the wound gets bigger.
02:09It is not like other diseases where there is no medicine.
02:14It is really important to see a doctor so that you can immediately be given antibiotics.
02:21The DOH does not see STSS as a public health concern today.
02:26It should pay more attention to wild or waterborne diseases,
02:30influenza, leptospirosis, and dengue illnesses that have a greater impact on life.
02:35For GMA Integrated News, Raffy Tima reporting for 24 Hours.
