Joe Talbot and Mark Bowen of IDLES caught up with NME backstage at Glastonbury 2024 to tell us about letting love into their lives, positivity in the band, and their fierce competition over who's the best dancer.

00:00How does it feel to be in Idols in 2024 after this record and living by that mantra of love
00:10is the thing?
00:11Are you feeling that reciprocated in the energy of these songs each night?
00:14Is Idols a more loving place now?
00:16Absolutely, yeah.
00:17You know, it's a thing I chose to, I was kind of like at a point in my life where I needed
00:22love.
00:23Not necessarily romantic love, but I needed to bring that back into my narrative as a
00:28person on a daily basis.
00:30And obviously I live this life as an artist, I'm singing these songs every day, and doing
00:35interviews and such.
00:36And it was a really healthy process to go through and talk about all that.
00:40And it's been therapeutic, literally, like, we look after each other more on stage, and
00:48the audience dances now and they have this, there's just a slightly new dynamic, we're
00:54never going to repeat ourselves again.
00:59So yeah, it's been, it is, it's fucking magic, yeah.
01:03The biggest change with the audience, I mean, our shows have always been about love, you
01:07know, it's always been about being uninhibited and sharing with each other, you know, but
01:11like, the biggest change is the dancing.
01:14That you can see.
01:15It used to be, you know, this like loving, chaotic mosh pit, and now there's moments
01:19where everyone just like locks in and grooves and it, that's the vibe we were going for
01:23and that's what we're getting, so it's great.
01:25Do you guys get competitive dancing on stage, who's the best dancer in Idols?
01:29It's a dead heat between myself and Joseph Talbot.
01:35The issue is, right, he's got the whole hip swing, bum shake thing that he does, I mean,
01:40I'm not too far away from it, it's an incredible thing to witness.
