I'm here today on the streets of Birmingham to ask people about a moment in their lives that is often a rite of passage - their first ever pint in the pub. Let's here from some of the people here about that memory and whether they think it's still as significant today.

00:00So my first beer, I didn't have it in a pub or a bar.
00:04I went to my uncle's house and he had like
00:07Disaronno, Bacardi, rum drinks.
00:11And so he offered me a drink when I was about 17.
00:15So that was my first like drink that I had.
00:17Just had a light drink, but I felt like masculine.
00:20I felt like a man.
00:22I felt good about myself.
00:24If I would say, does it matter?
00:26Like, is it like a traditional household thing?
00:31I would say, yeah.
00:32Because, you know, like the football,
00:34the Euros are on at the moment.
00:36And like when people get together, they drink beer.
00:38And it's a way, a lot of men bond.
00:40Me personally, cause I'm into fitness.
00:42I don't think it's the best way to bond.
00:44I think just jokes are better,
00:46but it's a classical kind of British thing, yeah.
00:49Well, my first drink actually was
00:51when I was slightly underage
00:53because my dad gave me a swig of his beer
00:56and got me an alcohol pop, so I didn't go crazy.
00:58But on my 18th, he took me into the pub
01:01and brought me like, what do you call it?
01:03A cocktail.
01:04So yeah, I believe that still exists.
01:07So for me, on my 18th birthday,
01:09it was actually just before the lockdown for COVID.
01:11So I didn't get to have that experience
01:12of going out properly.
01:14So I had to wait a sort of,
01:15I think it was a year or so after
01:16before I could actually go and have that experience.
01:18And I remember I went out with all my friends.
01:20We went to a Weatherspoons
01:21and we just all had drinks there and it was really nice.
01:24And it was just a good catch up
01:24because we hadn't seen each other in so long.
01:26So to me, it was a very special memory for me
01:28just because of that.
01:29And I feel to answer your other question about,
01:32whether it be in the same rite of passage,
01:34I feel like it's changed a lot now.
01:36I've never been, up until I was about 22,
01:40I had never had a drink in,
01:41an alcoholic drink in the pub.
01:44But the day I got married,
01:46I had a drop of whiskey off my father-in-law.
01:48And I was like, oh, I don't like that.
01:51But I did used to go to pubs after that,
01:54but I still didn't used to drink.
01:56I used to have bitter lemon and peanuts.
01:58That was my drinks.
